Out in the bay by my hometown in southcentral Alaska, there is a huge rock imaginatively known as "Gull Rock" because it is covered in a cloud of screaming, making GBS threads, breeding seabirds including puffins and it's a combination of "wow what horrible cloud of shrieking making GBS threads parenthood" and "holy poo poo that's a lot of birds how cool."

I held a hummingbird once. It was like holding an insect covered in feathers, constantly buzzing from its lightning-fast heartbeat.

i googled to see how they build those nests. Thats spider silk wound around their nest :metal:quote:Like a crown jewel, the nest of a hummingbird is one of the great wonders in all of nature. They are so tiny, yet so perfect. Few of us have ever seen a hummingbird nest. This is because they are nearly impossible to find. From the ground, they look like another bump on a branch. From above, an umbrella of leaves conceals them. And from the side, they look like a tiny knot, quilted with lichens, plant down and fibers. Though each of the 17 hummingbird species that breed in North America builds slightly different nests in various habitats, they have much in common. http://www.birdsandblooms.com/birding/attracting-hummingbirds/hummingbird-nest-facts/

There's a small office building less than a block from my apartment building with pink stucco and teal tile accents. It's... a peculiarly dated bit of construction. I walked by it today and there were tiles falling from the sky onto the sidewalk. I looked up and saw a woodpecker (I want to say a northern flicker, but the light was not forgiving and I saw it mostly in silhouette), cheerily prying tiles off the side of the building. An architectural critic or just hoping for bugs under tiles? Either way, it did not appreciate me looking at it and it hopped up onto the top of the building, out of sight.

I saw a bird of prey in my courtyard and posted about it. One of my neighbours sent me this. Think it's a female sparrowhawk.
