Just finished watching "The Night Manager," which was recommended in the previous thread for spy stuff less like James Bond and more like Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy. I liked it a lot, but hate that the main character seems to fall into bed with every female (except the older, pregnant one), and the ending is a bit too buttoned up. I wikipedia'd the novel and of course it has a bit more of an ambiguous, less happily-ever-after ending.

I'll definitely start up "The Little Drummer Girl" in the next few days.

It held my attention enough to watch all the episodes but I didn't think it was very good. I found the last episode to be especially bad and the very end kinda ruined the whole premise of the show. If you're okay with the villain, who you got in custody at this point, being taken and killed by some random third party, why not have him assassinated in episode 2 and be done with it. I don't know if it's better in the book.

More last episode
The cliff hanger for the last episode being if the dude from the Night Managers past will recognize him and blow his cover was resolved in just the most uninteresting way possible. He doesn't ever recognize him until TNM kills him mid episode.

If you want to know the end of the book (according to wikipedia) - Roper is torturing Jed and Pine on a yacht and Burr (who is a dude in the books) basically makes him a deal - return Jed and Pine alive, and they'll let Roper flee. He agrees and gets away, Burr gets Jed and Pine back to England alive where they live out their lives together in a cottage in some small town. No justice for Roper, no great victory for Pine or Burr.

The Expanse is pretty fun as audio books, due mostly to the reader (Jefferson Mays). For me, it helps offset the writing. His version of the Belter accent/language is really great to listen to.

One of the nice things about the later books is how people start dunking on Holden for being such a boy scout. And also that Holden is written as having some kind of PTSD from his experiences in book 1. Nice to see that kind of lasting impact from what should be a pretty terrifying event for the character.

I also sometimes get an itch for a spy thriller the of thing, and though somewhat different, a very good one I just watched is Carlos. Make sure you get the complete 6 hour movie/miniseries, it's not wasting any of that time and if anything feels like there could be more stories to tell.

I thought the thing with Battlestar was that the miniseries and roughly the first half of season 1 is really good, then after that it turns to stupid bullshit that goes nowhere and has no idea where its going other than playing up some mystical stuff and mysterious plots. Which is why I got out. A really sweaty guy getting caught jerking off all the time can only keep something going for so long.

Night Manager is basically Tom Hiddleston’s audition reel for Bond. It was fine, but as you mention I remember the ending being kind of a wet fart. The villain is built up as this brilliant guy and he goes down in a way that makes him look kind of stupid (from what I can remember).

Little Drummer Girl is a bit better

This is my problem with it (watched the entire first season). I just don’t like any of the characters, or find any of them compellingly unlikable.

After that one woman in the movie was all "No mom, don't go...", they should've just made the twist that what everyone was seeing was an impossibly beautiful, indescribable vision of the afterlife, and people were killing themselves because they wanted to get to "heaven" as fast as possible.

But nope, had to go with big uggo demons. Peeps always wanna kill themselves after seeing Undead Baby Huey.
