What kind of idiot would dunk on somebody using a shield. That's just asking to get stabbed by the first spearman you see because you don't have anything to protect yourself idiot.

I think it's the idea of "shield as weapon" that is the dunkable offence. Although I find it hilarious that in the three dudes' alt-Japans, the loving tank role as a whole is scoffed at.

So did the game world analogues have spellcasters and only the physical damage classes have corresponding heroes? Cause it would seem pretty bad game design for there to be only four classes one of whom is completely useless.

Except teensy shields like bucklers, people kept using those because they were light enough to not be dead weight and had offensive purpose.

The Shield Hero is actually a very powerful support class that was deliberately sabotaged by the evil goddess who is TOTALLY NOT MY EX-GIRLFRIEND, MUM, and the only way for the protag to work around the damage and power it up now is to collect slave-girls like Pokemon.

Ardeem posted:Five out of six isn't bad. Shousetsuka ni Narou generates a ton of content, of which pretty much anything that updates regularly and makes the ranking gets a print version. If you walk into a bookstore and look at a LN shelf these days a significant chunk of what you see started on Narou or one of its few competitors. If you scour Narou you can find maybe a handful of series that are honestly pretty good- the aforementioned Re:Zero, Slime, Konosuba, Log Horizon, and Bakarina, for instance. I might add a few more like I'm a Spider So What, Sword Dad, Bookworm, Death Mage, Kenkyo Kenjitsu, and Make My Abilities Average that don't have an anime or so much hype around them yet, but that you can expect to see in the future. Stuff on this level is good enough that you can at least recommend it to someone without it being awkward. Then you have the biggest group, the stuff that is generally enjoyable, but that has some sort of problematic...issue about them that make things uncomfortable. Last Season's Goblin Slayer, though it didn't start on Narou, is an example of this. So is Death March, Gate, or this summer's Arifureta. They might be fine most of the time, but have just a little bit of rape/slavery apologism/underaged love interests/uncomfortable nationalism/etc that ruins it. Then you have the absolute garbage, where I'd be uncomfortable being in the same room as the author. Shield Hero goes here. No idea why they thought this would be a good idea to adapt.

aw man, I expect better from Mother's Basement, he's usually really good about recommending stuff and being pretty nuanced in his analysis of series similar to supereyepatchwolf, but he put shield hero on his list of series to keep an eye on, despite rightful trepidation due to the poo poo the series literally starts off with. I don't think he's a manga/LN/WN guy so it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't know just how bad the series gets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmIT8wSMvPI&hd=1 also apparently the series has really high production values which is a real bummer that so much effort is being wasted on such a trash series Lurking Haro posted:Kumo desu ga is getting an anime

I do agree with him that it'd be an interesting show if the Shield Hero became a dirty anti-hero but it kinda ditches that premise after a brief while. And it isn't entirely trash until he gets his dumb revenge, which is the most pitiful thing I've ever seen on print, as if the author went was a bit of a drunk rapist.

even before that(I don't think it happened before I stopped giving the manga chances, which this series was one of the ones to break me of that bad habit), you had the child slave sidekick being aged up so that they could be romanced and she could be marketable, slavery is totally cool, the protagonist's harem being entirely children, I'm sure there's other poo poo I'm forgetting I really hate this series, I do genuinely like the premise of four people being summoned to a world and going off and doing their own things to save the world, having their own stories, and the main dude just being a miserable antihero with his lovely power, and this one just loving squanders that potential constantly in utterly impotent ways

I never read manga, so I get scared when someone mentions something about an anime turning (or going) bad. I'm usually trying to find the next grimgar of fantasy and ash or alderamin on the sky, things I watched randomly and got absolutely hooked on. Goblin Slayer didn't seem too bad, but Death march had me cringing, but the cringe parts seemed so tacked on like they didn't further the plot or ideas of the show at all, and were easily skippable/forgettable.
