Normally just prefer to lurk in this here sub-forum. I'm normally just tend to listen to the most mainstream djent/metal/deathcore and while I previously never had the August Burns Red bug, by mere coincidence this came as part of my youtube recs (huge music gear dork)... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smBIb-R2D6A ... and now I'm jonesing to know what's the name of the song in the first 40 seconds or so.

It was indeed the initial lead. It kinda reminded me of a less... um, spastic-ky Periphery? I mean, I love the heck out of Periphery, but sometimes the sudden tone shifts between sparkly cleans and heavy riffery need me to be in a very specific mood, otherwise I just feel like bailing or listening to something a bit less jumpy. Well, relatively speaking. By mainstream I think I meant like Every Time I Die, Dillinger Escape Plan, Darkest Hour, Converge, Killswitch Engage. Y'know, older stuff, I guess.

Well, relatively speaking. lol I think all those bands have put out new material in the last year (except Dillinger I guess) I totally get what you're saying about the switch from clean to heavy, although I would say that's a staple of at least a couple of the bands you mentioned. I used to be big into Periphery but for some reason they've kind of fallen off the map for me. But yeah, ABR is 100% heavy all the way and a lot of their leads/solos sound very similar to that opening riff.

Also I'm gonna go ahead and post a hot take: I can't stop listening to the newest Ice Nine Kills album. They're so goofy, but the album...works, somehow? I kind of respect the fact that the whole album follows a theme. This one is definitely still good but it doesn't quite match up to Every Trick in the Book after a few listens. Still made my honorable mentions list but didn't crack my top 10

speaking of which, is it too late into 2019 to still be posting top 10s?? (fake edit: double post don't care) 1. Between The Buried And Me - Automata 2. Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name 3. Cold Night For Alligators - Fervor 4. Rolo Tomassi - Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It 5. Alkaloid - Liquid Anatomy 6. Khemmis - Isolation 7. THEY - Unspeakable 8. Horrendous - Idol 9. Unearth - Extinction(s) 10. Amorphis - Queen of Time Best EP: Currents - I Let the Devil In Best not metal/adjacent: Panic! At The Disco - Pray for the Wicked Honorable mentions: Hellions - Rue Haken - Vector The Ocean - Phanerozoic I - Palaeozoic The World Is Quiet Here - Prologue Ihsahn - Ámr Ice Nine Kills - The Silver Scream Slugdge - Esoteric Malacology Cold Night for Alligators is my favorite new core discovery of 2018. Fervor is like if Beartooth went progcore instead of whatever garbage radio rock they released this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lAMOlLR_0g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvjJUCq-OGw

I don't really like Mother Tongue but I don't hate it either and the other 3 singles took time to grow on me so I'll probably end up liking this one too BMTH was hot garbage until Sempiternal, and That's the Spirit is their best album, amo probably still gonna be fine

I could probably comb through every album pre-Sempiternal and put together one albums worth of songs that I really dig and then forget the rest exist.

I’ve been listening to Winds of Plague - Blood of my Enemy over and over again for months now. I can’t find anything else quite like it. I love the vocals - I can actually sing along even though they aren’t “clean” and the lyrics are inspiring as hell at the gym. Plus the symphonic elements are integrated so naturally and it makes everything feel so big and grand.

Yes, my understanding was that he was a major contributor to the writing process in the band. I had the same thoughts when he passed, but honestly Holy Hell is their best album imo.

It was basically the same concept - Tim Armstrong decided to do a rap-rock album (2 of them actually!) It was...not great. BTW since the topic was brought up I'd just like to remind everyone that Rancid put out an album right before they started being weirdly poppy and it was way heavier than anything they did before or after: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjH8mE8eo_8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNNIt15A-lA Matt Freeman holy poo poo

so i just had the misfortune of listening to one of those new whitechapel songs called "black bear" since it showed up in my suggested music that keeps playing after i listen to poo poo i actually like (was listening to winds of plague again thanks to the poster above). my loving goodness they suck so unbelievably bad. i think it's safe to say that they're hands down my most hated "death metal/deathcore/whatever" band. second place is trivium. what bands can you guys just not stand despite them being well-received otherwise? am i the only one with a long list of "this poo poo sucks"?
