Lipstick Apathy

Okay, gently caress, jesus, fine. I'll watch one of these videos. Youtube has been recommending them to me for like two years now and I always click "not interested" because of the clickbait-y title card images. But this was pretty okay. It' fine. He's fine. It's fine. They're fine. It's fine. It's fine.

But you see Roma are white, so you can't really be racist against them. (This lovely opinion is way too common among people who call themselves progressives)

Rent was certainly a musical of it's time, but even considering the era it's treatment of lesbians and women in general is atrocious.

I was going to say I've never seen Rent but then I remembered I think I saw my sister perform in her college's performance of it.

I thought it was okay? It's been years though. Not really something I'd go out of my way to watch again in film form. Also I have the "525,600 minutes" song stuck in my head now, so thanks.

Rent was one of three musicals I endured every day I carpooled in highschool and Ill tell you what, that musical gets no better on the 45th consecutive day if listening to it.

Wicked was also a completely mediocre musical and the book its based on is the flimsiest excuse to mine the public domain for porn since monks drew rear end trumpets in the bibles margins.

I'm apathetic about Rent, but Wicked is a favorite of mine, so, uh, hard disagree.

The musical, I mean, not the book. The book seems... weird.

Do not read the book, I cant stress this enough.

If you dont listen to me Ill laugh though because within the first two pages the book just comes right outta the gate with the weird sex stuff so it wont even take long for you yo regret it.

Yeah, that sounds about in line with what I heard about the book. The musical trimmed a whoooole lotta gross stuff out, to the point that when I first heard the soundtrack in the mid-2000s, I legit was envisioning a 2D animated adaptation for the thing in my head, thinking that was a perfect fit. I suppose it's still a fair bit darker than Disney fare (even dark Disney fare like Hunchback), but it gave me that kind of vibe, y'know? (Having Hunchback lyricist Stephen Schwartz on it probably helps.)

Shame whatever film adaptation it's set to get (after being in development hell for forever) is almost certainly just gonna be live-action, but at the same time that was probably the only way it was ever gonna happen and I just set myself up for disappointment.

From the director and author of Watership Down, it's an adaption of Adams' later work and is much more pessimistic! It's about two animals that escape from British animal research facility stars a dog that drowned repeatably to test it's adaptability and the pictured dog, who used to be a pet before it's nice owner died, who was subject to experimental brain surgery that hosed up it's ability to distinguishes internal thought and current perception of the outside world (also gets seizures from time to time). Makes it's sister film look like a Disney film

Honestly that's one movie I can see worth remaking, long as they cut the Gargoyles or completely rewrite them so they're not so tonally jarring and ignore the people whining about Quasi not getting the girl.

But I don't have high hopes for them.

Honestly, I'm more concern about how they'll handle Esmeralda since Roma prejudice is alive and still considered not just socially acceptable but Right and Proper in many parts of Europe.

I remember old gbs threads where eurogoons who were usually very socially progressive suddenly turned into turbo hitlers the second the Roma were brought up. What gives?

Like I said earlier, its because they are "white", so they are an acceptable target. It turns out having a group of people that its socially acceptable to have a negative prejudice against based solely on their skin color will have consequences.

honestly it's more that, given even now you have governments swooping and taking children that don't look sufficiently Roma enough because 'The Roma must've kidnapped this child! Everyone knows they steal children'.

the book is pretty awful in a lot of ways, to be fair - such as Esmeralda isn't actually a Roma, she was a girl that was kidnapped as a child, with the subtext that's why she's good.

Have you actually read the book? Because the gypsies definitely aren't evil, and Esmeralda isn't especially virtuous.

Pick posted:

You could definitely review the movie that way, but Ellis states right from the outset that she's reviewing it as an adaptation of the book. She quotes from the book extensively, but she's definitely getting those quotes from critical reviews (and that's being generous, she might be getting those quotes from Shmoop or Sparknotes for all I know.)

It's a really good movie. Good characters, good fights, good humor, it's the best Dragon Ball movie ever made.

Every single one of Frieza's lines is comedy gold.

The one in theaters right now is dub, and it's really good. The sub is good too though. It really does just come down to personal preference. I prefer the English dub myself, because not having to read subtitles makes it easier to focus on the action.

So yeah, I'd say dub.
