The other guy I think of as being particularly influential in bringing elements of 80s rock to country is Dann Huff, another record producer whose roots are in that era. A lot of the songs he's produced for country artists ("Amazed" by Lonestar, a lot of songs by Rascal Flatts) sound like the kind of big power ballads you'd expect to hear somebody like Lou Gramm belting out. This is because Huff began his mainstream career as the lead singer and guitarist for an 80s rock band called Giant, who had a couple of minor hits with power ballads.

I read an article some years ago which posited that this changeover happened partly because of grunge and the emergence of hip-hop production techniques into the mainstream music business, which meant there was less need for the network of LA sessions musicians who'd previously been the backbone of pop music, but whose skills were still in demand in Nashville, where their style of production was still commonplace, so they all moved there to work.

I have an actual question about country music now: I like the Charlie Daniels Band stuff from 1970 to 1974, but outside "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" I've not really heard anything after that, when he's mostly credited as a solo artist.

Since there's so much of it (and since I know Charlie Daniels himself has eventually come to embody the stereotype of ultra-right-wing country musicians/fans) is there a cut-off point anyone would recommend?

Still in Saigon which was on Windows is about where I’d say that line is. I don’t think that album as a whole is that great but that song is pretty important to them/him.

Usually when I try to figure out a "cut-off" point and there's not an obvious thing, I end up looking at where the gaps between albums start getting wider, because to me that tends to suggest they're running out of ideas. Judging from Wikipedia (and including live albums) he had a new one out more or less annually, then there's a three-year gap after the one you mentioned before the next one comes out. So if my method works, that seems as good a place as any. :v:

I was wondering because Margo will have another child soon and she's not said how much time she's going to take off. Also it sounds like she may be shopping for a new label as her contact with Third Man is up and she's hinted that next record may be more R&B/soul rather than straight up country.

I really hope this takes off because those three are VERY talented and it make me secretly hope this will somehow get Trio to release a new album

The new Greensky Bluegrass album is out today. It's pretty good even if the title track All For Money is a little too self-congratulatory and there isn't any song that grabs me like Windshield does.

Also they're putting on a free stream of tonight's concert in St. Louis.

Yeah, I found that playlist along with the album when googling 'cosmic country' and related terms. Lots of really good stuff there.

I made a playlist of my own to stuff (mostly) newer songs I've liked that are in the same vein, if maybe swinging more towards the psychedelic end of the spectrum.

the Hinterland festival has released their lineup for this year. i'm uh basically already planning to go? i went last year and had a blast. the festival was really well-run. the lineup this year is a pretty significant upgrade, partially due to it being the first time they are doing a 3 day festival instead of just 2, but even so, the people booking the music are almost creepily in sync with my brainwaves

ps jeeeeeeesus that was a show, Greensky played one continuous set for their winter tour closer with members of the Billy Strings band subbing in to give the Greensky guys a breather. Near as makes no difference three straight hours. Re-loving-diculous

The Guardian had an interview with Brandi Carlile the other day. I'm not familiar with her at all, but she seems pretty even keeled.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/feb/08/brandi-carlile-grammys-country-gay-marriage-cancun

Excerpt:

quote:

She now has a collaborator in Sam Smith, a longstanding fan in Barack Obama, and a confidant in Elton John. With increased notoriety, she appreciates it might be harder to be outspoken, particularly in the country markets, but she sees no choice. I mention a recent interview I conducted for this paper with the singer Miranda Lambert – a “dear friend” of Carlile’s and a National Rifle Association supporter – who dodged political questions. “It’s irresponsible for country music not to address sensible gun reform,” says Carlile, having just written a yet-to-be-released song titled Cowgirls with the lyric: “The NRA can kiss my country rear end.” “Because they can!” she says. “I’m not afraid to say that. I’m not afraid of who it alienates.

“[After the election] it was like somebody turned on the black light and we were surrounded by the filth of our own ideology and our own complacency,” Carlile says. “That’s when I realised I was part of the problem. To not squander the opportunity I’ve been given is an evolution. If somebody believes I’m wrong, I want them to say it so we can engage. Big inclusive sentiments are a salve. They’re not appropriate.”

Kasey Musgraves got Album of the Year, Best Country Album, and Best Country song at the Grammy's last night. I know her songs are more or less pop but she's a good writer and decent voice and I hope this we start to see a things trend more this way and not towards Florida Georgia Line.

I think the myth that Whiskeytown has turned into is pretty weird. It's totally fan-sided. There doesn't seem to be a single member of Whiskeytown who would ever go through that, again. It just sounds like it was a pretty big disaster for everyone involved even if some of them got some recognition out of it.

I love loved 'Excuse Me if I Break My Own Heart Tonight' (it's a gimmick song that works) and that should probably be written on Adams' tombstone on behalf of his now-former fans and all the women he's been loving with for two decades.

waiting an hour to ride a school bus shuttle Saturday night was really the only unpleasant part of the weekend last year. right now i think the plan is to stay at the same hotel as some people i know and then we'll split the cost of a parking pass and the gas for driving there from the hotel

the food situation was great though. when i was waiting in line for a gyro i got to listen to half an hour of stories from the 20-something trainwreck Becky (from the douchiest neighborhood of Minneapolis, natch) who was standing in line behind me. these stories included such opening lines as "i think it's super rude to say no when somebody offers you cocaine". the gyro was good tho :yum:
