Godzilla 1985 if you cut out all the American added footage and plot changes is really a much better paced movie the Japanese film. Like I love Return of Godzilla but it really drags in spots.

Last fall I was at a horror themed flea market event, and there was one guy selling movie posters for far higher in price than the average stuff cost at the market. He had a mint framed Cozilla movie poster though for $300 bucks. He didn't actually realize what the movie even actually was.

Godzilla 85 was the only version available at Blockbuster and the newest Godzilla movie on offer so I watched the crap out of it. I also only saw the original in American form so I assumed that toho cast some white people to further tie in the whole WWII theme and maybe increase international appeal. I remember finding the Russian nuke launch weird even as a kid - really ham handed propaganda.

The good bit in Godzilla 1985- well, apart from the new opening credits, those are pretty good- is Raymond Burr's speech at the end. From all accounts G85 was going to be close to What's Up Tiger Lily until they got Burr involved, and he insisted on taking it seriously because he respected what Godzilla was about. So he gets this big speech about nature punishing man for our foolish pride, and it works- better than the weird pop song the Japanese original has.

I rewatched all 7 of them over the last few weeks and forgot how many of them are 1hr 45m or longer. Alot of them are kinda a slog to get through.

At least Destroyah has the Aliens knockoff to fill out the non Kaiju runtime.

Nroo posted:It makes me wish that Italian genre films would've had a glut of kaiju ripoffs. My theory is they were too lazy to build all the miniatures.. The one that comes to mind (though not nearly big enough to be a kaiju I guess) is Alien From The Deep. The first like 2/3 of the movie is sort of a Rambo/Predator sort of knockoff with characters being chased through the jungle and there's a cover up story and stuff like that. Then out of nowhere towards the end we run into, as some of the movie's covers describe it, "THE INFAMOUS BIG-CLAW!!" But to their credit they actually did build a two story high monster and the design of it is basically an 80s Italian movie kaiju: The full movie is here if one wants to skip to the third act, there's even several miniature sets that get blown up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uT96jbilNA Thinking about it, it's weird how a lot of the dystopian and post apocalyptic Italian flicks of the time do have a lot of miniature city scapes and stuff, and they're not even getting blown or or anything. The opening of 2019: After the Fall of New York and, especially, New Gladiators are probably the most ambitious for how cheap those movies were. The latter has a whole Blade Runner-esque version of Rome with a vaguely future Vatican and the big video ads on buildings and flying cars and stuff. I love it. Both movies totally own too, the latter is Running Man several years before Running Man with some light Blade Runner-esque twists regarding memory and stuff like that and the former is "what if Mad Max 2, Escape from New York......same time?"

Very good and illuminating, thanks for mentioning this. They put back in a lot of context that was removed from the American dub, added more kaiju / sea louse footage, and cut out some of the stupider jokes that redheaded member of service kept cracking. Didn't realize until I saw this that the Russian officer was aboard the ship trying to STOP the launch. The scene with the US and USSR diplos also ran longer and included the Japanese prime minister actually standing up more vociferously to getting double teamed for nuclear disaster. I thought this was big- after the conference there is an establishing shot marked "RUSSIAN NUCLEAR LAUNCH SATELLITE" (or something similar.) What doesn't show up in the American cut is immediately afterward there is a shot of an even bigger and meaner looking "AMERICAN NUCLEAR LAUNCH SATELLITE," implying that both the USSR -and- the US can't really be trusted to keep the 'no nukes in space' treaty.
