The Iron Rose posted:You can indeed! And in fact if you're purging for resources, you should resettle them all to the same planet. Purging is done one pop per planet at a time, so if you're getting resources out of them, relocating them all to one hell-hole is optimal so you get the benefit for the longest time. This is clearly not intended game mechanics, but stuffing one (captured) habitat or tiny world you don't want to actually fill with your own species with several thousand various-race pops as a Devouring Swarm is one way to completely prevent yourself from ever needing to build a farm district again.

From an Age of Wonders: Planetfall preview:quote:The other big feature I got a glimpse at is Doomsday tech, Planetfall’s very in-your-face version of a science victory. You’ll select one of the available Doomsday techs at the start of each campaign, and it’s not revealed to your opponents. If you can get to the end of the tech tree and finish the final project it unlocks, the world will be yours. Along the way, the Doomsday tech you selected will have its own section on the tech tree that builds up to the grand finale with related, smaller techs that can give you an edge. So even if you’re not going for a science victory, this choice will be highly impactful.

I usually play xenophobe empires for the sweet influence discount, but I figured I'd try something else today and went fanatic xenophile to try and be a nicer empire. First neighbour literally three jumps south from my capital is a devouring swarm (which I haven't seen in since 2.0 or something). Decide to go exploring east instead, bump into the fanatic xenophobe fallen empire. Turn around and explore west, bump into ANOTHER devouring swarm. So much for a diplomatic run. Also the fact that the devourers ask "why would our ship's presence be a problem to you?" when you close borders to them is really funny to me. I get that it's just the stock message all empires give when you close borders, but I like to think that the devourers say that with either dripping sarcasm or extremely feigned gentleness. *Edit* Aaand further east behind the xenophobe FE there are fanatic purifiers. Diplomacy truly is dead. AG3 fucked around with this message at 20:00 on Mar 2, 2019 |

Exterminators and Swarms should be able to make pleasure worlds that keep foreign pops as laborers but also culls them for resources at a lower rate. A big glorious trap world attracting the lesser races. I haven't given any further thought to this idea but it sounds cool

Maybe that doesn't work so well for Swarms but certainly Exterminators could be like "well we'll exterminate them faster if we trick them into coming to us"

So uh, MEs have a really rough start, but once you get rolling, holy poo poo do you get rolling. I kinda wish there were better ways to interact with organics. Right now you can purge them, enslave to make energy or at best set them up in a vassal state. The other option is to purposefully capture some planet you don't want and then after the war finishes, move all the captured pops to the one planet and then gift that planet back, with all their refugees. I'd like an option to send pops back to their home empire, or to setup some "hands off" colonies that I don't need to manage myself. Oh and vassalizing is dicey because hahaha the sector system is hosed. Seriously, why hasn't a hotfix been put out that lets you just manually edit them like you could before?

Preston Waters posted:I'm about to play New Horizons for the first time ever. Is there anything that I should know? Or is it just the vanilla game but everything Star Trek w/ unique events & story? - Early in the game, assuming you're playing as the Humans, you'll get an event chain involving sending the Enterprise to the Delphic Expanse. You'll want to follow the plot of the relevant season as close as you can to avoid Bad Things. You also can't form the Federation until this chain is complete. - Ship balance is totally different and rewards combined arms. You'll want to have specialised designs for particular roles, maxing out all buffs to e.g. high accuracy close range guns. Note that in the early game that particular design is important as many of the empires favour fleets of small fast ships, which will totally bone you if you don't have pickets. - On the above, don't be put off by the added complexity of ship design - just choose a favourite stat and max it out. - You also have some techs that have hard choices on how you'll specialise your ships and empire. It's best to opt for a doctrine here - large, powerful ships is a good choice for the Feds, as you would expect. - Haven't played since the New Economy, but in earlier versions pop growth was gimped hard compared to Stellaris, and I expect the same still applies.

It's also totally possible to get screwed out of the Federation formation events if you can't get enough of the founding worlds in a coalition. I'm not sure if you need all four of Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar, but I ran at least one New Horizons campaign where I was the Andorian Empire forever and the other founding worlds never formed the Federation on their own. I imagine the unique systems the Klingons and Romulans get are also similarly complicated. Some of the alternate future history that creates is tons of fun, though. Because the Federation never formed in that game, United Earth was never strong enough to deal with various crisis events, the Tellarites got eaten alive by the Breen, and the Vulcans eventually flipped their ethics and got cozy with the Orions.

You only need three of the four Federation founding worlds to form the UFP, which is nice if one of them is being a dick or formed their own coalition. It also won't trigger if you're in the middle of a major event chain like the Xindi crisis or the Surak's Katra events.

I've only recently started doing the same with Voyager because they're airing that a lot lately. I've never seen Enterprise and don't really care too because it looks loving awful. I've never seen a single episode of DS9 either, but would be down to watch it. I should prob get around to watching TNG, DS9, and Voyager in order though. I hated Voyager at first because the characters were so much weaker than TNG's, but it has some of the best plots / episodes I've seen yet. The writing was great for that show, from what I've seen. Basically, what I'm saying is that if I have to try and recreate the plot / decisions made during the shows then I'm gonna be boned, lmbo.
