Is it even feasible to fix the forums at this point? How old is the code, is it basically the same as it was in '99 or whenever? I'd think the entire site would have to be archived before really digging in, since from what I've gathered, it's easy enough to break the forums just using some of the basic admin features.

Maybe just archiving this trash heap behind a paywall and starting afresh would really be the best option. I understand that much of the bandwidth is just the legacy code moving masses of extra data that could be optimized away by a better platform.

And yeah, you, goon. Just in case you accidentally wander into Lowtax's patreon one day, there's some things you should know, and one of them is, there's absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest forum on the internet. We're 89th in "100 Websites That Shaped the Internet as We Know It", 5,227th in Alexa Rank, 2nd in fights with Uwe Boll, 1,098th in tasteful bathroom remodels, and 3rd in mangosteen sales. We lead the world in only 3 categories: number of banned goons per forum, number of adults who believed Caro was dead, and spine funding, where we spend more than the next 26 forums combined. 25 of which are unaware what spine funding is.

Now, none of this is the fault of a bunch of 30 year old I.T. professionals. But you, nonetheless, are without a doubt a member of the worst, period, forum, period, ever, period, so when you ask, "What makes us the greatest forum in the world?" I dunno what the gently caress you're talking about! Loss edits?

It sure used to be. We stood up for what was right. We delivered bees to remote villages, we made rules, got ride of rules, reinstated the same rules, struck down mods for moral reasons, we waged wars against Paypal, not The American Red Cross. We sacrificed LF, we cared about our fellow goons. We put our money where our mouths were, and we never beat our chest.

We built a DOOM HOUSE, let Radium make ungodly technological mistakes, explored the Awful Link of The Day, caused forums cancer, and we cultivated the world's greatest hot dog stand and the world's first internet urban legend-based stabbing. We reached for the low-hanging fruit, acted like goons. We aspired to act like we had intelligence, we didn't just mock Grover, we destroyed him. We didn't identify ourselves by whether we wiped standing or sitting down, and we didn't care so easily...Huh. We were able to be all these things, and to do all these things, because we were provided a platform. By a man, a lamentable dust man. First step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one. Somethingawful is not the greatest forum in the world anymore, but with your donation it can be.

A couple of years back when Lowtax had both a full set of vertebrae and a slightly less empty bank account, it was in fact the plan to migrate the forum to a package made this century.
