Gods need their weapons, it's mythology 101. The hammer focused his power, the axe enhances it. Done. Isn't Perseus or a bunch of other ancient myths all about finding a new shiny to replace the old shiny? Cool Axe in the context of superhero movies I think is ultimately the right choice because there's probably only so many ways to make Thor cool just punching people. I get the narrative concerns and yeah its a little clunky but there's a reasonable in universe explanation for the apparent two steps back on his character growth, it isn't a big deal.

I dunno, I thought they explained their position as best as they could without being at all offensive. I might not agree with their rant, but I get what they were trying to say. I mostly agree with their criticisms of the film itself though, which is a first for me when it comes to their comic book movie reviews. Jay is usually more receptive of Marvel films too, which actually surprised me. I thought they both were going to eat this film up since, as described by my friend, it was like it was made from MCU concentrate, and the RLM guys tend to really like their stuff. [edit] Thinking about more, I should say it's actually rare for me to have my opinion align with RLM when it comes to comic book movies. They enjoyed Wonder Woman

Real basic, forgettable MCU. Ben Mendelsohn was pretty good though. If you want to see any actually good movie by the directors watch Mississippi Grind. If you want to see an actually good movie starring Mendelsohn and Jude Law watch Black Sea.

Just saw the movie. I thought it was decent, but overall underwhelming. I felt like they did waaay too many 90s references, and it stopped being a source of levity real quick. In fact, the humor in general felt somewhat... off. The best way I can explain it is that there were numerous interactions where the characters were actively working towards setting up the stage for a punchline, which in turn felt forced. Anyway, my main complaint is that Danvers' character arc was very cliche. I mean, basically: Girl has gaps in her memory, girl gets stranded when a mission goes wrong, girl slowly regains her old memories, girl discovers she has been fighting for the wrong side, girl goes through a redemption arc. Yawn... Like others here, I'm curious how they will dial back her powers in Endgame, because wow, if she can destroy Kree destroyers by casually flying through them, it makes one wonder what she can do to Thanos. edit: my favorite scene is where she is standing in the parking lot of a strip mall trying to figure out a map, and the dude on the motorcycle catcalls her, then calls her a freak for refusing to smile at him. I don't know if that scene was added later, but I thought it was a perfect middle-finger to all the motherfuckers out there who criticized Larson for being too serious. Monica felt like she was originally supposed to be a girlfriend but they cut that bit out. Seeing as Monica was the child and Maria was the mother, this was probably a good choice! Captain Marvel is a Pedo! screams the headline. But seriously, I think they maybe went as far with it as they thought Disney would allow. The film can still be read as them being a couple anyway. Monica's father is sure never mentioned or even thought of as mattering at all.

IMO Captain Marvel didn't do anything that the Hulk or especially Thor could have done. I thought she was a bit under powered to be a threat to Thanos.
