1rl is worth a peek, though a bit too easy to win https://pfgimenez.itch.io/1rl In it, you play a 7DRL developer. You have seven days to develop your game and defeat crippling self-doubt. At first, the dungeon is empty, void of anything but ideas. You pick these features (such as a pun-based mapgen and lovecraftian RNG. When you equip them, bugs start spawning to attack you and consume your time. Defeating these bugs increases the stability of your features and improves their effects against bugs. Your weapons are basic, mythological, etc profilers, printf()s and hacks. Head downstairs to get more ideas and upstairs to try to release your game. Your weapons and features have certain synergies you can exploit and benefits like move speed, telepathy and damage retaliation.

Are 7 day rogue likes generally a "play for a half hour” kind of thing? A lot of the ones you guys have posted about sound interesting to check out, but most of my experience with roguelikes is that they take a while to really master, and I'm skeptical of the quality a game made in 7 days could be. As I'm typing this I realize there's nothing stopping me from just checking out any of these free games that sound interesting to find out for myself, so I'm not sure why I'm even posting this!

I think a lot of them are something like proofs of concept. You can't get a ton of depth in in 7 days, but you can put together a core mechanic and see if it's cool.

DF on steam looks good; I'm not a super huge fan of the tileset, but I imagine it'll be moddable, and it looks like it has a bunch of graphical features the existing game lacks so some better tilesets will surely get made.Angry Lobster posted:So, same as Lowtax? In the 'States, anyway. I never stop being horrified at how openly, unapologetically predatory the American medical complex is. People should make games because they want to make games, not because they'll be crippled or loving die for want of treatment if they don't bring in enough money to keep the vultures at bay. hosed up world we live in.

The entire country is like that. Your perceived value as an individual is directly tied to how much you're worth. I say this not to excuse our medical industry, but just to point out that our entire culture is badly damaged at a fairly fundamental level.

A good demonstration of this is that the second thing Americand tell people about themselves is their job. "Hi, my name's OutOfPrint. I work in IT. I pay $1,000 a month for my family's health insurance premium because its contract work and the agency's healthcare covers less and costs far more." I'm curious to see if Toady's cleaning up the UI outside of the tile set for the Steam release. Probably not.

So a game I've been interesting in while, Black Future '88, has a beta buy in on their official website: https://www.blackfuture88.com/ You'r basically buying the game and they will give you a steam key to the beta branch so I guess they didn't want to do a EA release? Either way I was wondering if any one has tried it yet. Looks like a side screen version of a 80'sfied Enter the Gungeon.

I bought the full version of Zombasite along with a friend of mine, and we've been playing in multiplayer. Game really has that indie charm - it's ambitious, complex, full of attention to detail and not afraid to be unforgiving; it's also not afraid to be a bit rough around the edges I'm really impressed with how artfully the dev implemented stealth. It's outrageously powerful in all the ways one would expect - it's incredibly powerful for scouting and avoiding danger, and a focused build can sometimes just outright assassinate extremely dangerous named enemies in the space of a second or two. However it's only available from a subclass entirely specialized in being an elusive glass cannon, so the only way to fully utilize stealth is to embrace that razor's-edge, all-in playstyle to some extent. Still, even when things go sideways and you find yourself in serious trouble, you can sometimes pull off some pretty satisfying escapes by deking around corners and vanishing into the shadows. It's challenging, but a lot of fun; works really well in conjunction with another player running a tanky build capable of distracting enemies.

adom's casino is iconic, because it's one of like fifty ways to break the economy on account of it being specifically designed to always pay out more than what you put into it. the 90s were a game design paradise.
