The subverting of expectations that Dr. Banner and/or his alternate persona known as the Hulk are straight, if interested in sex at all. That small surprise, that zig instead of zag, is the core of this human thing called "humor".

If you're looking for a gotcha moment where you remind us that being gay isn't a punchline, it's cool, because we already know that. To my knowledge, neither Banner nor the Hulk have ever been portrayed as gay.

I wasn't sold on yet another "Hey, maybe this characer's powers make them immortal!" turn, but going full horror book with it works.

And when the next writer comes on and wants to do something different, I won't mind when it's all reverted. I'm good with taking the Hulk in as many different directions as possible. Keeps things interesting.

I cannot for the life of me find this story, but it still sticks with me.
Bizzaro write a book and is demanding this guy publish it, just gushing about how great it is. It talks about how great his life is, and how everyone loves him, and how he always saves the day. The main reason I remember it is because at the end, it ends with the guy commenting about how if Bizzaro always says the opposite, then the entire book is about how Bizzaro feels completely and utterly alone, and knows that everything he does is messed up and wrong, with the final image being of him sitting all alone I think on the top of a skyscraper. Sound familiar to anyone?

Alright this one will take some setup so it doesn't get immediately thrown back in my face, as there's been a bit of hostility recently in the Badass Panels thread and gently caress that noise. Cool comics are cool comics, whether they're Western or Eastern.

Beastars by Paru Itagaki

I'm actually really enjoying this series moreso than I thought I would, and I think it's absolutely worth your time, so I'd like to bring it to your attention in hopes you'll check it out.

It won the New Creator Prize in the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes for 2018 (which is a really big deal), as well as the Manga Taishō, as well as a handful of other awards.

Beastars tells the tale of an animal society dealing with the racial issues of a world populated by Herbivores and Carnivores. It's essentially Zootopia, but in a much more 'grounded' setting. The story focuses on Legosi, a teenage Grey Wolf, as he navigates his day to day school life as he grows as a person while dealing with a variety of teenage and animal issues.

It deals with a lot of complex world building issues, such as:
- Herbivores and Carnivores living together and trying to (poorly) repress their baser animal instincts
- Herbivores living in constant fear of being preyed upon
- What it means to eat meat in a world in which it is tabaoo
- The differences in species, be they carnivore or herbivore, sea or land or sky, and how they all live together as best they can.

It's also difficult to predict which direction the story is going to flow, as it doesn't follow the typical story structures you see in a lot of manga, which really makes it intriguing page turner. The world building in particular is really well done, and it's always interesting to see unfold. This isn't some cheap Zootopia ripoff or cash-in either, as the original series of one shots predate the film as they were made while Itagaki was in University.

If I had to compare it to anything, I'd say that it reminds me an awful lot of Blacksad.

-------------
Spoilers - Gonna try something different with regards to spoilers on this one. :siren::siren::siren: I've edited out a character in all the panels, :siren::siren::siren: mainly because the reveal is a big part of the story, and I think this manga is 100% worth your time checking out and I don't want to ruin your enjoyment.

Setup - The beginning ot the series leads off with a herbivore student being murdered by a large carnivore, and has been an ongoing mystery looming over the school ever since. The Murderer has to be a student, because this is a boarding school so tensions are constantly running high between the herbivore and carnivore student populous. The identity of The Murderer has finally been revealed to 2 people, a Grey Wolf named Legosi (The Protaganist) and a Dall Sheep named Pani . They've been tiptoeing around the subject for a while, as for ~story reasons~ they can't go directly to the police, and it's finally come to pass that Legosi and The Murderer are finally going to settle things the old fashioned way.

If The Murderer wins he's just going to eat both of them, and he wants to make his intentions clear after finding Pani alone in the bathroom

(As always Right to Left)

Pani recomposes himself and makes his way to Drama Club, where they are rehearsing for a stage production called Adler, where he is playing the role of a victim being stalked by Death itself. The Murderer has recently taken to stalking the Drama Club, with everyone else thinking he's a great guy who just likes to hang around.

Remember this is a world where Herbivores are under constant threat and stress of being potentially eaten by Carnivores who give into their savage instincts.
Pani has had enough, and it's just a fantastic "I'm stronger than you think I am" moment for the series :allears:

You can read Beastars here, and let me say that the fight that takes place after this is loving insane
(Again I'm using ADTRW rules in BSS, with regards to directly linking to the manga, so tell me to go take a hike if that's not OK)

Beastars is just a really good read, and I wanted to gush about it for a bit. I promise you it is worth your time checking out!

The above panels happen occur somewhere between chapters 50-100 (Like I'm trying not to spoil it, because I think it's a fantastic reveal and follow up fight sequence)

It's also getting an anime adaption that will be available later this year on Netflix.

I'm like 99% sure if the manga pages were in color nobody would complain about them. Maybe if they were flipped too. The human mind gets triggered over the silliest things. I know this personally because I just can't watch anime even though the artistic style/animation is out of this world and the story extremely original and hitting all my notes. My lizard brain, marinated in the style of entertainment I have consumed all my life, is just annoyed without even knowing why and can't stop noticing all the anime quirks. I only have one legitimate gripe that I have been able to identify with manga/anime and it is the over-explaining of things.

I don't know, just trying to reason it out. If I see a panel I don't find especially badass/touching/whatever I just skip it and don't comment and I feel like things would be better if everyone did the same.

all art is bad and deserving of ridicule; anime, manga, comic book movies, comic books, etc

it’s by recognizing that everything is equally trash that you see that anime likers and rational people are not so different, and in fact it’s complaining about manga panels in panel threads that’s worse than liking manga in the first place, because it is no worse than liking comic books

remember this the next time someone posts my hero academia in the badass panels thread. your taste is no better than a wretched anime watcher. normal people will be reborn in the pure land, so so much more so the anime liker
