I, Butthole posted:Grabbed two more Argento titles (Inferno and Phenomena) as well as The Human Condition trilogy. I picked up The Human Condition as well. I'd already got Network previously anyway. I also got My Darling Clementine, The Endless Limited Edition (which comes with a blu-ray copy of Resolution), Irma Vep, Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey (which completes my collection of Arrow's New Zealand cinema classics offerings) and Street Mobster. edogawa rando fucked around with this message at 22:33 on Apr 18, 2019 |

Vagabundo posted:I think I've mentioned this before, but I really don't get Giallo. I've seen the genre standards like Phenomena (although I may have watched the wrong version) and Suspiria, and I've really made an effort but I just can't engage with it. It's like when I attempted to watch Arrival. I felt like a real dummy because I just couldn't engage with it and kept getting really restless watching it. I'm not saying they're "bad movies," I just can't get into them at all. To be fair, Phenomena and Suspiria are both strange giallos. Most people don't actually consider Suspiria a giallo at all, and Phenomena only kinda sneaks in but is far from representative. I'd say at least give some other directors a shot before writing the genre off entirely, Argento's usually considered the best but he certainly has plenty of idiosyncrasies that can be a turnoff for some people. Don't Torture a Duckling and The Secret Vice of Mrs Wardh are much better examples of "standard" giallos, and even with Argento, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is much more representative of the genre.

If you want something easy to watch, Stagefright is on YouTube right now for free. It’s a pretty fun one to watch. Pretty much you watch a giallo to watch trash but feel superior about it.

I'm not sure about the theatrical release but I don't think the director's cut has ever had a US (or UK for that matter?) home release.

Casimir Radon posted:Giallo veers kind of close to torture porn from where I sit, so I'm not super into it. That's true of Argento's movies and some of what came out near the end of the giallo boom, which is where their reputation usually comes from, but a lot of the stuff from 1969-72 (the genre's peak years) were much closer to goofy Agatha Christie stories with more sex and brief Hammer-esque violence, rather than the more ornate stuff you see in Tenebrae and its ilk. Argento casts a huge shadow over the genre, but sometimes I think that's to its detriment since he really had his own unique style that never applied to, say, Luciano Ercoli, Emilio Miraglia or Luigi Bazzoni. caligulamprey posted:I've never seen Stage Fright but I will always go to bat for Michele Soavi's Cemetery Man/Dellamorte Dellamore, which neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeds a stateside Blu release. I was unaware that they tinkered with the color grading when it came here though. I wonder why they did that.
