Yeah actually buick does make some nice entry level luxury SUV's if you're looking to upgrade from a CRV but not ready to shell out 60k for a Volvo.

Crossposting from the Harley Davidson thread (which I feel is just a spin-off of this one anyway): One of my uncles bought a brand new motorcycle in the 80s. He rode it once, fell off of it, and then left it in my grandmother's garage for 30 years until she died. Multiple people offered to buy it over the years and he refused every one of them. It's collecting dust somewhere else now, but I'm not exactly sure where. Another uncle was keeping a 1966 Ford Thunderbird in the same garage (which took up almost all of the space in there) for about 25 years. He bought it in the early 90s with this big idea that he was going to restore it. He also didn't know anything about fixing cars at all. He never looked at it again until he had to haul it away. Similarly people offered to buy it and he refused them all. He also had some guy keeping a parts car for it in his yard for about ten years until that guy got sick of it and made him get rid of it. Both cars ended up being sold to a scrap yard.

They rode motorbikes in the 80s until one guy's dad had an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. 3 or 4 bikes sat forever after in the company warehouse. They wanted a few hundred bucks less than what they paid for them never mind the fact they'd need full rebuilds after 20 or so years of absolutely no care. Plus a dodge dart and an old dodge truck that they were totally 100% going to get around to rebuilding next year, for real this time.

My hot water pipes in my house froze because I only left a cold tap open. For my entire life she's maintained that you only need to leave a cold water tap open when it's below freezing because hot water won't freeze. This is not only NOT true, it's actually the opposite - hot water actually freezes faster than cold water due to an endothermic reaction called the Mpemba Effect discovered in the 60's. Despite the evidence of my personal experience, and giving her a whole bunch of examples from google, including the name of the Mpemba Effect (which I never heard of before), she still thinks I'm wrong.

Same thing with my dad. He's an alcoholic who takes Tylenol PM to sleep. I suggested that he just take Benadryl because it's the same active ingredient without the Tylenol that destroys livers when combined with alcohol. Called me a smart rear end who thinks he knows everything.

It also taps into that irrational part of our brains that gets really emotionally invested in personal convictions. For example, a religious person isn't going to instantly abandon their belief just because some Dawkins zealot terms them God doesn't really exist - they'll fight the change in belief tooth and nail. A major reason for this is that it really sucks to realize everything you thought was true is actually a lie. It's just easier to stick to your guns than completely abandon your own beliefs. Another thing that makes it difficult to change is that the truth is often much more complicated than what they were believing up to that point. This manifests in stupid boomer old wives tales where they refuse to give up old stupid beliefs. The misconception that age =wisdom also means that the longer a boomer believes something, the more 'right' they think they are about it. So of course a boomer isn't going to change their mind about a fact that got debunked by a 10 second Google search-they have been believing it for 40 years at that point. You'll understand when you're older.

Winning presidencies without the popular vote, winning control of state legislatures even though they got significantly less than 50% of the vote... If they could just let themselves lose, they could pull the well, our way would've been better bullshit. But when you're always in charge, and you're always wrong, there's really nowhere for you to hide your rear end. Also at the end of 2018 there was an article about people under 35 abandoning the Evangelical movement - only 10% of Evangelicals were under 35 - and the Evangelical guy they interviewed is just like, they'll be back Yeah, good luck with that.

Honestly I basically associate all of the absolute meaninglessness cultural filth of the last 3rd of the 20th century or so bar the mid 90s onward as a burning car wreck of Boomer horseshit. Almost every single cultural contribution Boomers have made have been unveiled as utter garbage in the last 15 years or so. Blonde girls with bolt on tits? Boomer poo poo. Big box stores? Boomer poo poo. Motorcycles? Boomer poo poo. Pretty much anything on TV? Boomer poo poo. Any realm of politics right of center? Boomer poo poo. Car culture outside of Japanese imports? Boomer poo poo. Big game sports? Boomer poo poo. Chain restaurants? Boomer poo poo. The entire gear house of the Western economy? Boomer poo poo. It's all vile plastic trash and it'll die with them but not before they've penned a billion articles mourning the loss of it all and how nobody respects their cultural institutions and why would we? They built nothing. Nothing but McMansions with plasterboard pillars modeled in the style of cultures they have no connection to or understanding of hidden only slightly by the obnoxious SUV highride piece of poo poo they've got which has undergone metastasis and somehow spawned itself on the adjacent properties which are also somehow owned by boomers. I loving hate Boomers.

But putting aside the present matter, let us speak of another superstition practiced by these Boomers. It is said among the Boomers that when engaging upon any kind of edifice or public work -- highways, or buildings for public use &c., the Boomers will first kill an animal such as a dog and bury it near the foundation, with the aim of securing the animal's ghost, tied now to the place, as a kind of charm or guardian against all harm and mischief. It is furthermore said that in the remoter areas of the Boomers' nation, it is not an animal used for this effect but instead any unlucky vagabond or even a child who is killed and buried in this way to secure the service of his unhappy spirit.
