This thread title has both indie rock and pop, it seems to cover a wide swath to me. Seems like a band with three Grammy's and two #1 albums could fairly be called "pop" in at least some sense?

They're definitely not metal, maybe prog rock, definitely not butt rock. They're pretty much just "mainstream rock." Of some kind.

I think the pop is specifically referring to indie pop. We do have a pop thread but it would be extremely silly to bring Tool in there. There is a hard rock thread that needs some love as well.

Anyway I’m not gonna like, throw probes out for it or whatever, but there are threads for mainstream rock that get little attention. I’m also surprised there isn’t a Tool/MJK specific thread, considering how Tool fans are.

Yes, it was an anonymous Twitter account that anyone of us could have created. Some publications such as MetalSucks tried to follow up on it, but nothing was ever corroborated or detailed further, so I'm gonna give Maynard the benefit of the doubt.

Where's this collective "meh" coming from? Tool may have shot themselves in the foot by the album delay and not having their music on streaming services, but they still sell out arena's all over the country (including in red states where most indie bands don't ever dare play in) and they even played on crossover festivals such as Governors Ball, Boston Calling, and Voodoo Fest back in 2016/2017.

Used to, I got a lot of help in finding new artists and music through seeing live shows at Bonnaroo. But, the taste of that festival has shifted soooooo much in the last 10 years that I absolutely hate what music gets booked at that festival now. When I went a couple of years ago, I could hardly find a band with a guitar in it. They even turned one of the stages into a 24/7 dubstep stage that played the same 20 remixes all weekend long. Ughhhhhh.

Recommendations, please? :) I'm down for links to live shows from youtube. Studio stuff is cool, but live is on another live.

you're the one making an argument, not me. you have asserted a scientific argument that one specific musical group plays in "red states" (whatever the hell that means) and that a big amorphous, undefined blob known as "indie bands" do not play in such states. please note that the issue here isn't related to Tool at all, it's really that you're a moron. or maybe you're not, i guess i really don't know! perhaps you are really referencing a respected and rigorous scientific study about this issue that was published in the esteemed journal Online Music Fanboy Dipshits. i must admit i am not entirely familiar with that area of research

It's a piece of JUNK!
At this point rock music is basically where jazz music was in the '80s or so (and has basically stayed). People are still making it, and can make a comfortable living off it. And there are enough people who still like it, including critics who are happy to tell you which artists are important and good. But aside from the very occasional crossover or guest appearance, it's totally gone from the mainstream. I don't think it'll ever be big again.

Even rock bands who consistently sell out stadiums don't really make a dent in the radio anymore, unless it's a double feature with The Chainsmokers.

The conversation was about whether people still cared about Tool or not. I made a case for that people still do, such as the fact that they can fill arenas in places such as Alabama and Kentucky (like in the past couple days) whereas the majority of indie bands that are discussed in this thread cannot do that, or let alone even bother to perform in those states.

Then you show up being a complete oval office with this sort of derailment, accusing me of being a MAGA-shill. As Maynard from Tool would say: gently caress you buddy.

The guys from Friendly Fires did a pretty good vintage synth pop album with an absolute legend called Jon Brooks a couple years ago. The band is called The Pattern Form. Not sure if it was a one-off or a continual thing, but check them out.:

the majority of bands discussed in this thread are not big legacy acts that have been playing stadiums for decades. it's great that you're a Tool fan and have a weird stick up your rear end about "bands that refuse to play in red states" but i really don't understand why you feel the need repeatedly assert this weird illogical argument over and over again, verbatim, where every element of the argument is patently absurd. i also don't know why you're digging in against me on this, but perhaps you missed my earlier post where i suggested that the goons hating on Tool and saying "oh there's no buzz about this" were insufferable hipsters insulated in their little pitchfork media bubbles where every mention of a band like Tool involves a smirk and a sneer

Tool will fill arenas in any area of the USA, and most of the world. I think they are doing the random smaller city tour thing to warm up before their album is actually released and they go on some mega world tour.. not to mention those cities don't often get major acts so it's a nice change for them.. not because "rednecks".
