The IIHF World Championship is a yearly international tournament where the best of the players from Europe and NA (who aren't in the NHL playoffs, slightly injured, in their contract year, finishing their degree, getting married, or going to Six Flags,) duke it out for international supremacy across the pond. This year it's in Slovakia. Sweden is the defending champion, defeating Switzerland (!) last year in the finals. The US won bronze. You can go to the schedule up there in the wiki or go the main site here. The US never wins this thing but they have been taking it more seriously lately and have possibly their best team ever this year. Canada looks weaker than usual but still very strong. Sweden will have a good team as always and the Russians have the best top line in the tournament if they want to run Ovechkin/Malkin/Kucherov. Likely top picks Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko are both playing in this tournament. Here are the tentative rosters: CANADA (as of 1 May) Goaltenders: Mackenzie Blackwood, New Jersey Devils (NHL) Carter Hart, Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) Matt Murray, Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) Defencemen: Thomas Chabot, Ottawa Senators (NHL) Dante Fabbro, Nashville Predators (NHL) Brandon Montour, Buffalo Sabres (NHL) Darnell Nurse, Edmonton Oilers (NHL) Damon Severson, New Jersey Devils (NHL) Troy Stecher, Vancouver Canucks (NHL) Shea Theodore, Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) Forwards: Tyler Bertuzzi, Detroit Red Wings (NHL) Anthony Cirelli, Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) Sean Couturier, Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) Adam Henrique, Anaheim Ducks (NHL) Mathieu Joseph, Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) Anthony Mantha, Detroit Red Wings (NHL) Jonathan Marchessault, Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) Jared McCann, Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) Sam Reinhart, Buffalo Sabres (NHL) Mark Stone, Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) Dylan Strome, Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) John Tavares, Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) Kyle Turris, Nashville Predators (NHL) Head Coach: Alain Vigneault SWEDEN (as of 6 May) Goaltenders: Jhonas Enroth, Orebro HK Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (NHL) Jacob Markstrom, Vancouver Canucks (NHL) Defencemen: Lukas Bengtsson, Linkoping HC Mattias Ekholm, Nashville Predators (NHL) Oliver Ekman Larsson, Arizona Coyotes (NHL) Erik Gustafsson, Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) Robert Hagg, Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) Philip Holm, Torpedo Nizhni Novgorod (NHL) Adam Larsson, Edmonton Oilers (NHL) Marcus Pettersson, Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) Forwards: Jesper Bratt, New Jersey Devils (NHL) Loui Eriksson, Vancouver Canucks (NHL) Patric Hornqvist, Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) Adrian Kempe, Los Angeles Kings (NHL) Mario Kempe, Arizona Coyotes (NHL) Marcus Kruger, Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) Anton Lander, Ak Bars Kazan (RUS) Oskar Lindblom, Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) Elias Lindholm, Calgary Flames (NHL) Joakim Nygard, Farjestads Karlstad William Nylander, Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) Elias Pettersson, Vancouver Canucks (NHL) Dennis Rasmussen, Metallurg Magnitogorsk (RUS) Anton Wedin, Timra IK Head Coach: Rikard Gronborg RUSSIA (as of 8 May) Goaltenders: Alexander Georgiev, New York Rangers (NHL) Ilya Sorokin, CSKA Moscow Andrei Vasilevski, Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) Defencemen: Artyom Blazhievski, CSKA Moscow Vladislav Gavrikov, SKA St. Petersburg Dinar Khafizullin, SKA St. Petersburg Bogdan Kiselevich, Winnipeg Jets (NHL) Nikita Nesterov, CSKA Moscow Dmitri Orlov, Washington Capitals (NHL) Mikhail Sergachyov, Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) Alexander Yelesin, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Nikita Zaitsev, Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) Artyom Zub, SKA St. Petersburg Forwards: Sergei Andronov, CSKA Moscow Artyom Anisimov, Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) Alexander Barabanov, SKA St. Petersburg Yevgeni Dadonov, Florida Panthers (NHL) Mikhail Grigorenko, CSKA Moscow Nikita Gusev, SKA St. Petersburg Kirill Kaprizov, CSKA Moscow Ilya Kovalchuk, Los Angeles Kings (NHL) Nikita Kucherov, Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL) Yevgeni Kuznetsov, Washington Capitals (NHL) Yevgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL) Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals (NHL) Sergei Plotnikov, SKA St. Petersburg Ivan Telegin, CSKA Moscow Head Coach: Ilya Vorobyov USA (as of 1 May) Goaltenders: Thatcher Demko, Vancouver Canucks (NHL) Cayden Primeau, Northeastern Univ. Apparently Zacha has some beef with the Czech federation and won't play for them, which sucks because this is exactly the kind of tournament he should have been playing in for the past three years. Matthews is also a punk for not coming this year, man this roster would have been so insane had he did. NHL Network is broadcasting every US game btw. Here's a Jack Hughes assist from their 5-2 exhibition win over Germany: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dLvTKR_-e0&t=107s Looking at the rosters again -- the Czechs look pretty solid actually. Definitely a medal contender. In another one sentence burst: I'd expect more players to be added from Dallas/Colorado/Columbus soon. Faksa would help the Czechs quite a bit. I might watch because Eichel owns. It’ll be cool to see how Hughes does, too. Also Team USA looks really good if you don’t look at the goaltenders...

Finland is going against Canada without any NHL players on day one? This'll be fun I guess. Then again, maybe fresher legs will prevail, but the odds don't look good anyway.

Russia adds Gavrikov and Zadorov (their D looks pretty reasonable now actually). Canada adds Jost. Czechs add Faksa. T-Bone fucked around with this message at 18:53 on May 10, 2019 |
