Staraptor had 120 attack and got Brave Bird and Close Combat, which was downright bonkers by Route 1 Bird standards.

Choice Scarf, Reckless, Brave Bird, and Double Edge.

Staraptor is best Kamikazeburd. His job is to go forth and murder until he can murder no more because he has murdered himself in the process.

Hoothoot/Noctowl is my favorite early-game bird line; it has the most distinctive design (a clock-owl that turns into a grandfather clock-owl, instead of a songbird that turns into a bird of prey), and as a nocturnal bird, it showcases the day/night system. And despite being a Normal/Flying type like the other early birds, it has special-oriented stats and learns a bunch of Psychic-type attacks. The others sort of blur together, but the Hoothoot line stands out.

I should add that of the more conventional early bird designs, Fearow is the most badass.

Toucannon is great in principle but I adore tiny woodpeckers so every evolution made me a little sad. Actually what I really want is a Shrike. Give me a bird that is a relentless killer but still tiny and cute!

There should be a character who specializes in non-Flying birds, like Pike Queen Lucy specializing in snakes. Empoleon, Blaziken, Porygon-Z, Decidueye, Magmortar...

Sort of. IIRC, the original plan was to have a Bird type and a Flying type, with the latter being for non-Bird flyers like Zubat and Dragonite. They sort of merged and re-split them to create the existing Flying and Dragon types. The legacy of this is still present in Gen I move typings (bird-themed moves like Peck were Flying-type even in Gen I, while air-themed moves like Gust were Normal-type).

Ooh, bird chat!

When I first played Gen 4, Staraptor became my favourite bird Pokemon because of Close Combat and Brave Bird. Claire was a vital member of my team in Platinum. It looks really cool too.

Then in gen 6, I fell in love with Talonflame because.... Talonflame. Roger was a member of my team and then I trained up Shayera for the Battle Maison. Cool bird with cool (hot) moves.

Now my favourite might be Toucannon because toucans are just great and I love my angry toucan Judy. It’s got a surprisingly wide move pool too and Beak Blast has saved my butt on more than one occasion. Did you know it still has the power to burn opponents if Toucannon is asleep? I took part in a Pokemon League at an anime convention this weekend and the gym leaders were surprised by Toucannon’s movepool.

Pokemon Colosseum and XD have a lot of issues(particularly pacing) but they're pretty unique and I really liked them. Before HG/SS they were the easiest source of Ho-oh and Lugia too. Also if you can get one the American bonus disk is still the easiest source of Jirachi.

Talonflame is the best bird (in my opinion) because it's a falcon that's on FIRE and kicks people and is pretty much the equivalent of "red and fire makes you go fast" and how deadly falcons can be as hunters.

What a coop bird, really!

One thing X really has going for it is Fletchling. It seems like every Pokemon game has a "it's a bird" and a "it's a varmint" Pokemon. But Fletchling actually evolves into something cool, instead of just a bigger normal bird. I hope future games do that too.

I adore predatory birds of all kinds but I actually don't really like Talonflame visually for the very particular reason that it is a Pokemon: that is, it looks like "a falcon" and not some kind of cute or weird monster. For example, Mamoswine is more than "a mammoth" with his cute spherical rotundity and angry old man whiskers. For a more direct comparison even Staraptor is at least more than "a hawk" because of his punk pompadour that also makes his whole head / neck star-shaped. Talonflame's just kind of a falcon with a flame paint job; like, that's :krad: in most contexts, but it's lacking for a Pokemon.
