My youth soccer league, karate tournaments, etc had big trophies you'd get for actually winning things, and also little piddly-poo poo consolation prizes that said "GOOD EFFORT" or something on them. Something about his heavy reliance on scribbling/pointillism (in this case), dark shading, and how he structures his faces (and wrinkles) is a dead giveaway.
