Limited stock of melons at a base selling price just shy of 9k, and an infinite supply of durian at 8k. Which is pretty decent, but to put it in perspective, that magic demon slaying sword that just appeared for limited sale sells in the shop for a base price of 46k, and the endless supply of crystal swords for 28k. And if I could drive up the little girls' budgets enough (which I can't because they max out around 50-60k), the priciest book available can be sold for 125k, with the best one actually in their budget at 32k. Of course, all of these pale in comparison to the best possible boom, a men or old men interested in holy or sinister items, each of those categories containing one of the two most expensive types of floors, which sell for 200k and 300k, respectively. But I've probably got a couple more loops before they have that kind of walking around money.

Come to think of it, Tear wears glasses too. How exactly do you manufacture glasses for a humanoid creature the size of your hand? Is this just something glasses makers are supposed to become skilled at or is there an entire specialized industry dedicated to corrective lenses for fairies? Is this maybe something Recette can get her hands into instead of retail?

Well, under the properties of refractive optics, whatever her correction is, it's not like the curvature of the lenses change or anything, you just cut whatever her Rx is down to fit her frame. Now, her lenses look to be a partial frame along the top, which is a little unusual, but in this case probably is slightly easier than if you had to screw something together

If I had to guess, I'd prolly say "a fairy glasses-crafter" combined with "Fey magic to give them more utility". If the fairies are going all-in on capitalism, they probably have some spells that can make glasses tell the approximate value of goods at a glance. I know I would if I had magic and wanted to corner the market on everything.

Let’s Talk Adventure People

So, let’s talk a bit about adventurers. I’d hoped to grab a bit of video for this little intermission, but unfortunately I’m typing this up on my laptop in the airport, so no dice. Just as well, since poor timing led to not being able to actually unlock Nagi before the end of the month, so she would have ended up being the odd woman out.

The point

So, why the overview? Sharp-eyed readers will have noted that I used Louie for this entire playthrough. There’s no reason at all to restrict yourself to one adventurer, just something I like to do when running through the regular game. But the game does keep track of which adventurer you use most in a playthrough and rewards you at the end with a True Card - the ability to use that adventurer from the beginning of the game in future New Game + and Survival runs. I’ll be getting Louie’s True Card, which is obviously only useful for getting to skip that initial trip through the Hall of Trials, at the end of this run.

And that’s the point, there’s still plenty more to see, but I’m nearly at the end of the month, and the game ends with it. I’ll be starting a NG+ to knock out more. So you, the studio audience, will get to vote from the adventurers we’ve been introduced to. Whoever wins your vote, I’ll make an effort to recruit ASAP in the next cycle and then use for the rest of that cycle.

Right then, adventurers.

You should first get to know a few adventurers, and build up a certain level of trust with them. If all goes well, they will give you a symbol of their guild membership - this usually takes the form of a card.

I’ve certainly been doing that. Humble (and cheap) Louie, professional berk Charme, that rear end in a top hat Caillou, adorable archer Tielle, broke alcoholic Elan, and the perpetually lost Nagi, who I’m sure was going to give me her card any minute. There are a couple more adventurers, but both are locked behind boss fights in future dungeons and we won’t waste time talking about them yet. These six are the core adventurers you’ll have when you first enter the endgame dungeons. A swordsman, a thief, a mage, an archer, a monk, and a spear-wielder.

Louie

https://lpix.org/3464458/Louie.gif

You remember Louie, he’s been with us from the beginning and has been the only adventurer I’ve used so far. He and Recette get along like siblings, but Tear doesn’t seem to care for him. Not because he’s poor, but because he’s dumber than dirt. He’s too dumb to realize that as soon as Recette met him, she’s been maneuvering him into position as Recettear’s enforcer. No horse heads, but if you don’t fall in line, Louie will gently caress you up. He most often comes into the shop when it’s decorated to look like a place he can afford to shop in, and he usually buys weapons and scarves and sells random cheap poo poo he found while adventuring in caves.

Sword, shield, heavy armor. Louie’s got a lot going for him. His sword provides both decent range and a wide arc to his attacks. His shield can block physical projectiles, and on top of that, he’s got heavy armor for high defense, but can still wear lighter armor if I have something with better stat bonuses.

From a gameplay perspective… Louie is Link. He hits things with swords, he spins around to hit everything around him, and he shoots sword beams. His sword beam is too weak to be useful and costs too much SP, but the spin slash is handy when you’re surrounded, especially since you gain invincibility frames while using it. He’s a little slow, and can’t dash, but he tanks like a beast. Really, you’re better off just whacking stuff and saving his SP for trying to spin slash through to avoid them.

Charme

https://lpix.org/3464460/Charme.gif

Charme tried to mug Recette and Tear at the end of the Jade Way. In response, they sicced their pet swordsman on her and had him beat her to within an inch of her life. Then Recette gave her medicine, not because the kid is a soft touch, but because she knew this would endear Charme to her, eventually adding a skilled thief to the Recettear stable. Charme prefers the store when it looks a little dark and a little expensive, and likes buying daggers, accessories, and treasures, and uses Recette as a fence to get rid of her stolen loot. For some reason, she keeps stealing durians and selling them to me.

Specializing in daggers and medium armor, Charme is one of the fastest characters, and one of only two who can equip shoes that let her go even faster, but she crumples like a cheap car if she takes a big hit. Best defense is to not be there, she’s fast enough, and can dash, to get out of the way of most attacks. She can also parry most attacks, although I’ve never been great at timing it. Her attack range is kind of terrible and her arc isn’t as wide as Louie’s, but she hits respectably hard. She also crits more than anybody else.

Charme’s skills are little underwhelming. She can create duplicates of herself that move as she moves and attack when she attacks, which are handy for extra damage output, but require a lot of clever maneuvering to use effectively. She can set herself on fire and charge across the screen, which is useless for dealing damage but does allow her to charge through enemies safely. Her web trap can prevent enemies from moving or attacking, which is handy when you need to tie up a powerful opponent for a second to gain a better position or clear out weaker mobs.

Caillou

https://lpix.org/3464467/Caillou.gif

Ever since we completed that order for magical reagents, he thinks he’s coming into the shop to sell his lunch every day and lambaste some lazy girl his age. He can’t see the bigger picture, Recette maneuvering him into a position where he needs a merchant to team up with to tackle the dungeons. And naturally, she’s the one profiting off this team up, while Caillou merely believes he’s gaining magical power and knowledge. Eventually, his debts will force him to take a higher paying position, under Recette’s heel as Recettear’s magical specialist. Caillou prefers the store dark and plain.

If Louie is a tank, and Charme is a cheap car, Caillou is a wet paper bag. His robes give him next to no defense, his health is pathetic (seriously, Louie has more HP now than Caillou does at level 99), and he’s slow. He has a terrible, short range, tiny arced melee attack that exists for only one purpose: hitting things causes him to regain SP. The reason you use Caillou is because the little rear end in a top hat has the highest drat magic stat in the game, with the best items to increase it, and his spells range from decent to phenomenal. A fireball that can hit flying enemies, an ice explosion that’s tricky to aim, but powerful, a spammable electric projectile that give i-frames when first used, a magical shield that damages incoming enemies, and a teleport to a random spot on the current map. He wins in sheer damage output and has decent utility.

He's still an rear end in a top hat, and I don’t particularly like playing him, but I can admit his good points.

Elan

https://lpix.org/3464466/Elan.gif

Notably not an rear end in a top hat is Recette’s new friend Elan, friend to all children and owner of bar tabs. It’s obvious why Recette would want to bring Elan under Recettear’s control, his status at the church, the orphanage, and the public make him one of the greatest sources of information in the city. Nobody wants to lend him money, but everybody wants to talk to him, he’s everybody’s buddy. Under Recettear’s yolk he’ll be sharpened into a master of obtaining and disseminating information. Elan comes most often when the store is plain and light.

Elan can’t match Louie for tanking, given his restriction to light armor, but he has by far the highest base HP. Unsurprisingly, given that he punches things, he has the shortest attack range and no arc, but he has decent 1-2 combo with knockback on the second hit, and can stunlock many enemies if he gets them against a wall. He shares Charme’s flame charge, which is about as useless, a long combo hit that gives him i-frames, and a Berserk that increases his damage, but renders him unable to use items.

Tielle

https://lpix.org/3467908/Tielle.gif

She’s so adorable, you can almost forget that she’s a horrible bloodthirsty monster that will kill and eat you if you cut down too many trees. Despite flying into a berserker rage and trying to murder Recette on first sight, Recette and Tielle made fast friends after Recette sacrificed expensive medicine to spare the other girl a trip to the hospital and lengthy convalescence. Of all the adventurers in her employ, Tielle might be the only one Recette sees as close to an equal. Tielle’s role is obvious, connecting Recettear to outside markets, primarily the elven lands. In fact, Tielle, if she plays her cards right, will likely become Recettear’s regional overseer in that area, as long as she never shows that she might ever be a threat to Recette’s power. Tielle prefers shopping in a very light store, and likes all the common little girl items (bracelets, hats, and books), in addition to bows.

Tielle is another entry in the medium armor club with Charme, but given her ability to attack at range, you should be trying to avoid being in a place where you can be hit in the first place. She shoots all the arrows, hitting harder than Charme, but less often. By default, arrows do not hit in an arc, she shoots the thing in front of her, but her attacks can be charged to fire multiple arrows in an arc, hitting multiple enemies or even hitting on big enemy multiple times. Charged attacks also shoot further and deal additional damage per hit.

Tielle’s skills consist of more trick arrows than Hawkeye, including a flaming arrow that flies across the whole screen and pierces enemies, a multi-hitting seeking arrow, the shoot into the sky and hit random targets star arrow she used in the last phase of boss fight, and a berserk Cuterage that speeds up charging and makes her immune to knockback

Nagi

https://lpix.org/3467972/Nagi.gif

The perpetually lost Nagi, the only character from the non-endgame that I wasn’t able to acquire a card from before the end of the month. She and Recette hit it off, Recette is too polite to make fun of her, and more importantly understands the value Nagi has to Recettear. Like Tielle, she has connections in foreign lands, and can help to spread the brand, and with it, Recette’s power. She’s too good-natured to ever know the real purpose behind Recettear, but makes a very useful patsy. Nagi likes the store a little light and a little gaudy, and often buys spears, various accessories, and food.

Nagi, like Louie, can wear heavy armor and shields, and blocks attacks just as effectively as Louie. Unlike Louie, she can run at a fairly decent speed. Her spear does not hit in a standard arc, but has long reach. Her attack targeting is considered to be the width of the spear and whatever the spear point hits (effectively a very narrow arc), and with practice, it’s possible to effectively ignore enemies shields by hitting their backs, even from the front.

Nagi share’s Louie’s spin slash and Charme’s charge, and backs them up with a multi-hitting thrust and a projectile attack that hits harder than Louie’s sword beam.

I'm going to vote Tielle as well.

The thing not mentioned about the charge attacks is that you're completely invulnerable doing it. Charme's lasts the longest (maybe Elan's too? I've literally used him once), so is the safest for escaping.

I'll lengthen the brief on Charme. Charme specializes in not getting hit constantly, and can actually output an absolutely disgusting amount of damage if you use her correctly. Her dash has invul frames, she can block literally any attack if you're feeling risky (or stuck), her dash has massive invul frames, so realistically you can dodge basically anything with her. Her swing is kinda short range and not overly great, but that's where mirror images come in. You can spam up to 5, which cover an area in front of you (and can stack 3 wide). If you can catch something in the middle of those, they get eviscerated by Charme's attack + all the images, which stack up to a lot.
She can also detect trapped chests, which is helpful on occasion.

Whoever's got the biggest whiskers does the talking.
I know I'm doomed to failure, but I'll hang with my best bud Elan.

Also, you're wrong (or at least in my opinion you're wrong) about the tanking bit about Elan vs Louie. In fact, he's better at tanking BECAUSE he wears light armor. Since Elan wears robes he has ultra high magic defense in addition to naturally high physical defense and high hp. So while Louie (and Nagi to a lesser degree) will get absolutely hosed by many of the more dangerous attacks later on in the game, Elan can shrug them off like it's nothing. In addition to his half damage berserk, we're talking about single digits/low-to-mid teens* from nearly every attack in the game till sometime near the end of Lapis Ruins. Also, he does have an attack arc. In fact he has a 360 degree arc. An enemy right behind him WILL get hit by his attacks. It's just kinda hard to notice due to his attack range and the fact it seems to be more of an ellipse than a circle. Though to be fair, his attack range is longer than most give him credit. It's slightly farther away than his fists would indicate. There's a flash of light that generates from his hits...that's his approximate range. Just slightly less than Charme's.

*assuming you keep him geared and actually use him in the dungeons (i.e. he's adequately leveled).

The secret to Elan is that berserk is stupid good. Double defense, double attack, and no knockback means you can just brute force the majority of the game. Just be smart about it's usage and the item issue is a non-issue. And it's so drat cheap in sp for how long it lasts means that the candy/chocolates you pick up in the dungeon will likely often be more than enough for your sp needs.

Plus he gets the best usage out of Durian fruits.
