I helped run one of these conventions one time for a friend who was involved in the organization's admin and I can tell you that these kids (most of them anyways) are not doing these competitions voluntarily; their parents are making them do this poo poo at emotional-gunpoint.

I loved the poo poo out of spelling, but yeah, for a lot of these kids, it's not only a pressure deal but practically treated like a job, complete with every day tutoring from exorbitantly paid tutors and everything, which kinda seems to defeat the point of fighting for a scholarship, but that doesn't seem to be what it's about anymore. That's a big reason why the pool is getting bigger and harder to whittle around anymore, with these kids taking it on as a job, which is extremely ridiculous. Still, can't fault the kids that. And most of them don't break down on the couch or any of that anyway, so dumb comment by that dude, obviously.
