Amber thinks #metoo is a wedge and not really worth considering at best, and actively something to work against at worst.

And of course there's a bit of truth to that because idpol in the hands of disingenuous people will spoil anything, but to my knowledge she's never stopped to make that distinction. There's an increasing amount of nuance to issues within labor and left politics that I think she just doesn't want to engage with, but if we don't, others will assume our positions for us. I think she can do a lot better.
i remember that when MeToo started, it was a way for women to say that they've been sexually harassed/assaulted before and that any women who feels alone, shouldn't. in other words, it was originally a solidarity movement. unfortunately, it ended up becoming confined to a movement for women in upper-crust, highly visible industries like Hollywood and the media, which then became just another crutch for liberals to lean on in the absence of ideological solutions. meanwhile, women in other walks of life have been ignored. do you remember the national walk-out by women McDonald's workers a year or so ago as a protest against continued sexual harassment by management? i only knew that through the Fight For $15 email campaign, because it sure as hell wasn't reported on by cable news outlets

it's possible to criticize what MeToo has become, but you have to be very, very careful in how you phrase it. and while Amber hasn't phrased it exactly like i have, and has managed to come off as abrasive in the process, i'm almost certain that's what she means

The A=432 thing reeeaaally hurts my head. my day job is musical instruments and even the old A=442 stuff is useless in a modern context because we all just kinda decided it was stupid to make everyone buy two of the same instrument that works the same and has the same range but with ever-so slightly different geometry because that's how poo poo like oboes work. makes it a good cult cause though because that's one insane windmill to tilt at

I highly recommend The Michael Brooks Show. It's a somewhat offshoot of his work on the Majority Report, but it's become it's own thing now and is extremely good. He gets great guests on it, and it's genuine leftism.

Hell yeah, Michael Brooks is good on the Majority Report, but he really shines when he doesn't have Sam Seder around to cut short his pointing out the limits of liberalism and advocating Marxist points of view. I especially recommend his show if you're interested in hearing what's going on in politics and social movements outside the United States, it seems like a lot of the newer American left media outlets have that as a blind spot and it's really bad.

This is what fascinates me most in existence: the peculiar necessity of imagining what is, in fact, real.

The Antifada is also broadcasting out of the Majority Report studio and has a more goth anarcho-communist perspective and is good too.

the biggest way to combat sexual assault/harassment is through financial independence and unions, and the people who have co-opted the movement would rather mow the poor down with Mk-9 Reaper drones if they thought the poor were coming for their poo poo, which probably drives her cynicism

I bet Michael Brooks would have worn the hat if we sent him one.

I don't read or listen to much Current Affairs but I imagine what put them on the map was NJR's long takedowns of the flavours of the month in the "intellectual dark web": Smol Ben, Sam Harris, Jorp. I think Brooks is writing a book on them (the IDW, that is) that is coming out soon.

Kinda but UBI as a replacement for rather than supplement to a strong social safety net is dumb as hell. It incentivizes jettisoning social security, food stamps, public housing, etc. Like a third of the country rents so it's basically a giveaway to landlords unless it's part of a huge redistributive project

Are there any well-regarded left podcasts with hosts who are women? My gf has been moving leftward and asked for recommendations, but she's still trying to get past the "socialism as boys' club" meme that got pushed really hard in oh let's say 2016 or so. Red scare sounds like a mess, girls chat is operating about thirty levels of irony beyond what either of us are capable of understanding, and Amber is Amber. So far my best bet to recommend to her is Season of the Bitch, but I haven't listened to it before and people earlier itt didn't seem thrilled with it.

i recommend listening to fun shows like bitch sesh, doughboys and hollywood handbook and not getting politics from podcasts at all.
