Answer to a last big cameo or two at the panel was "tune in". As was Daisy opening Coulson's letter.

End of Season six trailer from SDCC - SPOILERS Sarge gets 'better' and chases after Izel. She releases some shrike into the jungle. They wind up in some South American ruins and he tells her he's finally succeeded hunting her. It wasn't a hunt she says but he was longing for her. The three obelisks were collected and a portal with something came out. Sarge is superpowered in a dusty way and isn't all there - somewhere between Hive dust and Ghist Rider ash. Daisy does have the letter in hand but isn't seen openong it. Cornered by Daisy Sarge/Coulson seems to take control and ask her to finish him. Cut oddly to Enoch telling Jemma and Fitz that they are about to do the hardest thing they've ever had to eliciting an 'I know' from both. They seem to be carrying guns.

I'm certain I missed a couple bits and got a couple others slightly wrong but it looked good.

I know the season/s isn't over but with that announcement, I've been reflecting upon what makes me like AoS so much and I got a few things in mind about how the characters are used in relation to the world they're in. Sorry for the wall of text/effortpost, just things that crossed my mind.

A - I like how the villains have their things going behind the scenes instead of acting reactively to the A plot of the characters we see on-screen. In fact, this has I believe been something that keeps me hooked up a lot. There's a constant sense of mystery in the air about what is happening that we're not seeing, kinda like a thriller. And instead of major mysteries piling up and creating a Lost effect, these plots are usually resolved in a timely manner that doesn't waste my time. I like that.
B - I like that the supers are actually, well, supers. And I like how their powers is usually used in a way that is not stalled by plot armor. A quick comparison actually has to do with A - The villains had a plan to escape, and it involved their own fire-breathing giant. I like how quickly that was dealt with and all the consequences. It makes sense that they'd have a plan, and it made even more sense that the plan would go south because Quake is there. The same applies to Yo-Yo. Her power has some pretty obvious limitations that prevent her super speed from being a get-out-of-jail-free, but it should be impossible for anyone to deal with her. And that's pretty much what happens, it makes sense that she can solo neutralize Sarge's crew, and she does that. No bullshit. Compare this with Arrow winning a duel against Flash (????).
C - I like how the character drama is done. Again, since I might as well compare it with Arrow, in AoS the unresolved drama between Fitz and Simmons is done in one episode, through a very creative way, and it ends up with a trippy scene of their evil selves making out for comic effect. We see drama, we see sci-fi, we see comedy, we see action, we see some of their past. It's loving great. If this was Arrow it would be like this:

quote:

Fitz, crying: I'm sorry Jemma, I cannot date you anymore. You betrayed my trust.
Jemma: I DID IT TO PROTECT YOU!
Fitz: I don't need protection. I need honesty.

NEXT EPISODE:
Deke, crying: Your love transcends space and time. You can't give up on her like this.
Fitz, staring at the distance: It's complicated. You wouldn't understand.
Deke: So I guess that's it, uh? I'm not smart as you to understand. You hate me. Well I'm not stupid!

NEXT EPISODE:
Fitz: I'm sorry. You were right. Whether it's me or the other Fitz, I'm still me and I learned a valuable lesson.
Jemma, crying: Just please, don't go again. I can't afford to lose you again.

Deke, crying: I hate you for implying I'm stupid.

CYCLE REPEATS. NEXT CONFLICT: DEKE AND FITZ

Now there's been plenty of drama like this in AoS but not to the same extent as these other shows and I feel that it has been getting subdued over time or better written. Even stuff like Yo-Yo and Mack drama is watchable because the episodes don't dwell on it. It's not an episode point for 20 minutes of 3 episodes in a row. They're split, people point it out, there's conflict, but there's bigger loving poo poo going on so let's not dwell on it for half an episode. "Eventually you'll have to deal with that", "Yeah sure let's deal with it after all this life-ending poo poo is over".

D - Speaking of Yo-Yo, I'm really glad she didn't die. Going from past experiences with latins introduced halfway in TV Shows the moment she was introduced I was 99% sure she would die. Even now I still have this uncanny feeling that her character will not make until the end and I'm hoping it does. Latin characters introduced from the start, if they're a main part of the cast I fully expect them to have a backstory with a drug cartel. Or they're introduced halfway in the series and then they die. Or they're only extras attacked by villains so they start religiously praying in Spanish mi madre de Dios protégeme de los demonios. I think The Gifted show nails the bingo down. I'm really hoping that Yo-Yo survives until the end.

Most of all, compared to comic book shows, I like how this is a relatively straight show (It's still schlock, but compared to Legends of Tomorrow which is a comedy nowadays this show is consistently more serious) that liberally utilizes sci-fi elements as plot points instead of being character drama driven or having a faux limited scope (the show is mostly in a district but oh look there's actually a worldwide organization of villains going on!), and I guess this makes AoS my favorite "serious" superhero show, which is pretty crazy because I hated it from the way it started but it seemed to have potential and it's very rare that that potential is realized. This element in AoS has been amplified over time, and I assume it's the writers and directors figuring out what works and what doesn't, but it's great. I think Legion S1 was great and it made sense because the main character is unstable, but I can't endure that same model for, say, 5 seasons. A similar thing happens in shows like Daredevil. They're very small scale but then they're not. Suddenly there's this worldwide cartel controlled by magic old woman with extreme super powers, but the show is strongly about style and the characters, so while watching the season I feel entranced by the drama and the thrill and the spectacle, it seems too self-contained to become something considerably bigger. At some point watching the characters worrying about their day job while crazy supernatural worldwide events are happening is distracting, Having the same, same Batmanesque talk about not killing people while the villains are supernatural entities is distracting. This is also something that, again, made Arrow so irritating - There was a whole episode where they pretty much beat the crap out of an entire gang in a rooftop, but will not kill the gang leader because that's not kosher. And that would be fine, if they hadn't just blown up a helicopter in that same scene which I'm pretty sure would have killed whoever is on the helicopter plus who knows how many civilizan casualties.

When AoS agents shoot people with tranquilizers, it makes sense. When Quake who could level a building enters as a field agent and neutralizes the enemies without killing them to retrieve something, it makes sense. When the crux of a show is people debating about whether or not they should kill villains while mass-murdering them every season, it feels like a hypocritical agonizing rehash of modern batman. And that ends up being the ultimate irony, that watching the tranquilizing guns in AoS used consistently ends up more honest than watching these other shows. Every boring dialogue in AoS is replaced with something actually going on. And nothing feels too illogical like Arrow beating the Flash. When something is overwhelming it's because it's aliens, and there's a vast universe of things that are not understood by the humans from Earth. And if it's aliens then it can't necessarily be solved from the same set of warehouses/district/city they're in. If they have to take a spaceship, they will; If they have to navigate a space station, they will; if they have to go to a different planet they will spend time trying to open a portal to it.

I guess, back to the point of the sci-fi elements being used liberally, the thing that makes me favor AoS over the other superhero shows like Heroes, The Gifted, the entire Arrowverse (minus LoT which is awesome because they embraced the stupidity and I love camp) is that nothing in AoS seems illogical or a plot element purely because the characters are unbelievably dumb. Thinking of a show like The Gifted which is very recent, nothing in that show made sense. Character drama involves a refugee scolding a leader of hunted people who live in the sewers for gently caress's sake for stealing grains from a supermarket to feed the refugees which she just dumped on him. Every character acts in the dumbest way possible, consistently, because that's the only way the plot can move forward. At some point the super advanced tech the humans have is downplayed/retconned because the mutants are so dumb and so useless at using their ridiculous array of powers that the only way to create tension is by removing all the high-tech robot murder spider armies from the government and replacing it by a few activists with guns. It's like an arms race of stupidity, where the plot has to become stupider to accommodate the fact the characters are getting dumber. The only show I have trouble comparing to is Gotham because Gotham is its own crazy bizarre thing.

I could write more since I have a lot in mind but this feels like a good place to stop. I'm glad that AoS is gonna end on its own terms.

I like how the show is written, how the characters are written, how the show spends very little time doing formulaic soap opera drama compared to similar shows and instead chooses to use its time to do either experimental stuff in just the right pace or move the plot along.

To further push how little this matters along the movies, Tony and Steve are gonna show up at the end. That's true. There are plenty of dumb moments and AoS is not immune to them, but at least I never feel like constantly shouting at the screen "JUST USE YOUR POWERS!!!" as much as other shows or movies.

Like even something that would be in other shows a plot device to prevent superman from using his powers to save budget on effects or to increase drama (or both), is like:
"Uh-oh! If quake uses her powers, this bomb will detonate! Sure her powers have been countered, what a surprising plot device!"

In any other show that would be essentially a plot device with one of those two purposes. In this show the scene is resolved with:

"Okay, then since I can't use my powers or it will detonate the bomb I will just use my powers to overpower the bomb. Camera, come here. Come watch this poo poo. I'm gonna hard-counter a nuclear bomb. See this poo poo? No no don't say it happened offscreen. See this poo poo? PROBLEM SOLVED. Plot, move along."
Oh no a swarm of evil monsters is coming! Whatever will we do now?
"We will move the plot along by virtue of me obliterating all of them like I'm jean grey."
"There, problem solved. Plot, move along."

I mean, that truck alone holds so many memorable moments. There are more interesting scenes inside that truck than in entire seasons of certain superhero shows.

All the portal shenanigans.
Deke and Snowbunny disgusting everyone. May's face of disgust followed by exasperation and Quake's "I need bleach for my eyes" is great.
May finding out where the truck is.
May fighting (always good). This is a short line so I'm editing to emphasize how much I like the fighting scenes in this show.
Everyone finding out about the bomb.
Snow's anger at Sarge as she finds out she is left to die.
Snow slowly panicking and realizing her stupid bullcrap that she's okay doesn't actually work when it's her own life on the line.
Quake lampshading that "she's a hacker".
Quake containing the bomb through the power of using your actual powers in a tv show when you have them.
Quake resolving the other problem caused by not letting the bomb explode by using all those powers in the same episode.

Okay, this part went a little too far in my opinion. I mean, Quake's a pretty cool dude but I didn't know she was strong enough to keep a nuclear explosion in check with gravity powers. And okay, fine, maybe she is! But then the entire planet-destroying swarm of Shrike decides to fly directly at her, every single one, and she's able to just blow them ALL to pieces, no stragglers, none fly away, no one gets hurt, they're just all entirely dead, end of threat. The huge world-ending threat that has Not-Coulson going all scorched earth and willing to destroy planets, no match for Quake in a head to head battle. I thought it was dumb in the exact opposite way that the Flash deals with stuff like that, instead of having the guy with superspeed get chumped by some rear end in a top hat with a dagger to invent problems, they have the lady with wavy beams just somehow wave all their problems away.
