You’ll probably be fine and best to get something you know will work on what you play it on.

I very much notice framerate messing as I’d watch a lot of US TV back in the UK and the speed up was noticeable. The kids in Malcolm in the Middle sounded like chipmunks when sped up. I have some issues with watching my British stuff here, but most of it isn’t the best quality anyway so eh.

E: I don’t know how much gear in the US is still able to even deal with 50i/25p footage anyway. At best I’m gonna guess ‘doesn’t break completely’ is the best you’ll get and there’ll be a conversion to 60i on TV playback regardless, so only people with computer setups will have full luck. In Europe, 600hz TVs were a thing as they’d be the only things that could do true 24, 25, and 30fps stuff. I’ve never really seen anything here advertised to do that.

IMO, 50Hz looks a little more natural, but it has more to do with your hardware. If you get the 1080i60Hz version, it'll play on anything while the 50Hz version will either not play at all (PS3/4) or will end up being converted to 60Hz anyways depending on your player/TV.

I think the most common example of this encoding is the Beatles 1+ Blu-ray, which has some of the promo films encoded this way since many were shot in 25fps, so slowdown would screw up the pitch.

This video upload is from the Blu-ray source in the same 60Hz encoding:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rblYSKz_VnI

compare to one of their promo films shot in 24fps and was encoded at 24Hz:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtUH9z_Oey8

FYI, this sort of encoding trick is pretty useful. When Fox released the Blu-ray of their 4K restorations of Oklahoma! - they were able to include a progressive encode of the 30fps 70mm version by encoding at 60Hz. It'll show up as 1080i, but the fields line up perfectly resulting in true progressive 30fps.

Honestly this is all kind of confusing to me. I have the Beatles 1+ blu-ray and I never thought anything seemed off about it. I can't even see what is supposed to be going on with this two clips above. They sound and look fine to me. I suppose I may notice it more if I compared it to the record or something. In any case, I don't have a region free player so it probably doesn't matter for me.

For catalog titles, new scans are licensed out a fair bit - so I've always taken it that if a new remaster or scan doesn't appear locally, it's a cost benefit thing. Criterion's new Police Story/2 scans are licensed in the UK by Eureka, so it's not an exclusivity thing (similarly Criterion have started releasing stuff in the UK, so it's not purely a matter of region rights). It sucks, especially given that we have JB and Amazon and that's about it for physical media here.

Going region free is the easiest way to enjoy physical media, though. I don't regret many, if any, of my Criterion (or Arrow, Twilight Time, Vinegar Syndrome, 88, Severin, Kino, Flicker Alley, etc etc) purchases, because generally they're decent value for money even with our terrible dollar. Nothing beats free, but the actual packages, features and other stuff make it worthwhile. Keep an eye on deals and sales and you'll be set!

Where do I keep eyes out for sales? This thread? Do all those other studios/companies releasing stuff have individual storefronts or do they all sell on Amazon/eBay?

There's usually quite a few posts that'll mention stuff on sale in here! Otherwise, blu-ray.com has a deals page (https://www.blu-ray.com/deals/?category=bluray#2) and a forum that is a total hellscape but decent place for sourcing deals. Some other mainstays for me as an Aus. physical media addict:

Barnes and Noble (http://bn.com/) have a twice-yearly Criterion sale, where all titles are half price, including the big box sets, and ship to Australia during them. Otherwise, for Australia, Amazon is generally the place to go for the cheapest way to get them.

Arrow Films (https://www.arrowfilms.com/) ship from their UK store (so titles are Region B) to Australia. They have occasional flash sales, buy one get one free, and seasonal sales. Super cheap shipping to Australia.

Vinegar Syndrome (https://vinegarsyndrome.com/) also have two big half-price sales, the Halfway to Black Friday (May/June iirc) and Black Friday (November). Everything they have is weird and niche, but they're really nice packages and even blind-buying something is gonna give you an interesting experience. They ship to Australia at pretty reasonable rates.

Kino Lorber have sales, but they're generally only on their own website, and they don't ship to Australia from what I can tell. You'll have to rely on Amazon US to ship their stuff over.

Generally, if a label is US based, check around the big shopping holidays and something will be goin' on. Most US posters here will chuck up a notice, anyway, so this is a good thread to hang around in!

Vinegar Syndrome also offers a nice pre-order package at both sales. If you're into their stuff (like me), it's worth dropping the dollars to just have them automatically send you all their regular releases, my only complaint about it is that I wish they offered a half-year package for Black Friday like they do at the half-way sale, because November is just a bad time of year to spend that much money on myself.

If you're new to Vinegar Syndrome though, I'd be wary of doing this, because in addition to weird-arse horror and low-budget stuff, they also deal in a lotta porn, although I think they've introduced bundles that explicitly exclude that stuff now. Just double check before you blindly hit a buy button.

That said, you should immediately buy Christmas Evil.

Yeah, they've mostly dropped DVD only titles so the packages are "Horror and Exploitation" or everything, which includes the porn.

It used to be Blus only or everything. I will admit that the porn blus I got then were at least interesting and everyone should own Hot and Saucy Pizza Girls on DVD.

Christmas Evil is amazing, and it's made all the more amazing by the fact that it's the only good, non-soft porn movie the writer/director ever made and the last movie he ever made. And it's really good somehow.

Brandon Maggart is fantastic and he hates the movie and is nothing like the character he plays. Everything about the movie says it should've turned out bad but it so didn't.

I bought the Goodfellas UHD just because I didn't own the movie in any format yet so there wasn't much of a downside for me.

It's fine. It's just not really an upgrade. It's a lot like the Ghostbusters situation where the movie got a really nice "mastered in 4k" transfer like a year before the UHD came out so you're not gonna notice a leaps and bounds type improvement there.

As far as I know Plex is the best option for this since they also provide mobile access and server sharing.

I’ve never seen Hugo although I got it free from iTunes awhile back. I’ve read that it’s Scorcese’s actual last good movie, but I don’t consider it in the same canon as all his R-rated stuff, ya know?

Aviator I saw years back and it had good performances, but I remember it being kind of paint by numbers and some sloppy editing. If I should re-visit, let me know, but that’s how I remember it. I’ve also gotten a lot shittier about biopics as I’ve gotten older.

Hugo is a fantastic movie. I saw it in the original release and the 3-D was mind-blowingly great (actually SHOT in 3-D instead of converted).

If you're familiar with early cinema history, there's a lot of great stuff. In fact, one of the best uses of 3-D is re-creating the first showing of the Lumiere's Arrival of a Train.

I just watched a video on the state of AI image depth tech and it seems like we're just on the edge of robust post-converted 3D becoming a setting more than a process.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prMk6Znm4Bc

The artistry of it will never be as good as the real thing, but with a decade of refinement I can imagine this entirely replacing post-conversion. Just click the 3D button and it automatically applies depth.

There are moments when I call Hugo his best movie full stop; it’s never left my top 5 since I saw it in 3D. To me it’s the perfect summary of Scorsese’s film historian career track - it’s him explaining why he spends all that energy restoring stuff or producing archive-driven music docs through a parable about why this stuff matters in the first place. The framing story of the kid in the train station obviously isn’t as thrilling as, say, Goodfellas turning out to be narrated by Ray Liotta from the witness stand the whole time, but if you’re expecting simpering kid stuff it will wildly exceed your expectations.

The Aviator bored me when I watched it the theater, but I found myself going back to it and liking it more each time. The way he presents each era in terms of how movies in that era looked in color is exceedingly cool; to me it’s the best example of digital color balancing as an expressive choice since O Brother drained all the green to make things feel old. And I’ve come to like how messy the story is too - Hughes was a messy dude, and it tracks that a movie about him should leave you struggling to keep up. I’d put it on the same level as his Cape Fear - an extremely good movie which gets lost in the shuffle of the vastly superior movies surrounding it.
