This is a tough one for me mostly because I'm an egomaniac and think everything I put up is the best thing ever I feel like my favorite episodes of my own stuff are the ones where things bug out a lot, but that happens every two or three videos depending on the game so it's hard to narrow it down that way.

That said, my favorite pre-SA would probably be part 3 of Wednesday for my old Postal 2 LP. I think I still had the old ten- or fifteen-minute time limit at the time, and even if I didn't there was a long length of time where some part of my editing process would gently caress up if I tried to make a video that was longer than about 22 minutes, so to save on time after a screwup without just cutting out the selling point of that LP (me being a complete psychopath) I went for a montage of everything that I did for the rest of that recording session, which also set the standard for me overlaying Postal 2's map music over random things.

Barring that it would be the bonus video for Blood II, because I really liked the framing device I used for that, and also because putting that video together meant I no longer had to play any more Blood II.

Sometimes I enjoy doing bonus videos with extra content. One of the favourites that I made was from Sam & Max in The Devil's Playhouse, there was a console only item that was purely cosmetic. Some of the code remained in the PC version and I found out how to gain limited access to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-HjFHGGjPA

If we're going mainline videos I'd say This Way To the Egress, where I talked about how if you overlayed area maps you'd see some interesting interplay that was never in the game but makes sense between the game and history.

Welcome to Cities: Skyline!

In 2013 we were subjected to the rebooted SimCity. It came down like the Hindenburg and we watched what was once a great franchise go down in flames. Two years later, out of the wreckage that was city building games came Cities: Skyline. Produced by Paradox, created by Colossal Order - the genre was given a breath of fresh air as the player had to manage the demands of the city, avoid gridlock, and maintain the cities needs for services.

About Me:
I've got nearly 500 hours logged on the game, and I feel I've got a firm grip on the mechanics. I don't do any sort of work with city planning. But gosh am I enthralled with some of the work done to make a roadway function properly. I'm a father of two, happily married, and work as a Teacher Aide.

Thread Participation
I want folks to have a hand in the way the city is shaped as we go through each step of the game. This means you all can choose the modes of transportation, or whether we make it look realistic, or crazy. I'll be giving some options to challenge me in ways that would hamper the growth of the city, or to make it a little harder by playing off my weaknesses too!

Also, play along! If you bought a copy on sale and just never got around to installing it, or if you're a seasoned vet - Share your city as it grows alongside the threads!

DLC and Mods:
Official DLC

After Dark: The first DLC, introduced new buildings (including casinos) and expanded upon Tourism giving players a way to increase their cities revenue.
Snowfall: Gave players snowy themes to play with, but also introduced new utilities to help their citizens deal with the cold. It also gave us Trams.
Mass Transit: Planes, Trains and Automobiles. This DLC gave us boatloads of new transit options. Monorails, Cable Cars, Ferries and... Blimps. But it also gives new road types and transit hubs.
Green Cities: Don't like giant heaping piles of garbage? You're in luck! This DLC gives us options to reduce garbage and recycle. Unlocks the Recycling Center and city wide policies to help reduce clutter and provide cleaner energy options.
Parklife: Allows the player to build unique parks. Zoos, Nature Preserves, Amusement Parks and more.
Industries: Want to make money? Like an absurd amount of money? Get this DLC. Set up industries related to Farming, Logging, Ore or Oil (or all of them, you animal). Manage their exports and imports, prepare for the influx of trucks and make sure your infrastructure is prepared.
Campus: The latest DLC. Allows for the creation of your own University. The base game has colleges and continuing education buildings, but this allows for the creation of a sprawling education campus. Alongside this, you can pull in more students and outside revenue by making its own sports team. SPORTS. SPORRRRRRRRRRRTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.
Match Day: A mini, free DLC that added a Soccer Stadium and the ability to manage the team that plays in it (Campus added upon this by letting you manage Football, Basketball and Track & Field)

MODS
I use a bunch of different mods that I feel really help with the management of traffic (which is super important) and also a couple of different assets, that make the initial start a bit more smoother. There's also some that help with making building roads and other transit a bit easier to place.

TM:PE: Traffic Manager: President's Edition - Helps you set up intersections, set road restrictions, and place new speed limits. Allows you to control your traffic in ways the base game can't. This is an essential mod.
Fine Road Anarchy/Fine Road Tool" The game tries to limit the way roads connect or overlap one another. These mods says "forget that!" and let's you finagle your networks in crazy (or realistic) ways. Another essential mod.
Network Extensions: Gives you a bunch of different roads that help in tremendous ways
Move it!: Lets you move stuff. Its very helpful. Very.
Roundabout Maker: Helps you build traffic circles in a single click. Not essential, but nice.
81 Tiles: In the base game, you can only unlock 9 tiles out of the 81 available tiles. This lets you go hogwild and get them all.

If you're going to use any mod (including the official DLC) get the :siren:LOADING SCREEN MOD:siren:! For some reason the loading in this game is ATROCIOUS. This mod helps the game along, preloading assets and generally getting its poo poo together faster.

Now that that's out of the way, let's get down to some fundamental city building!:
PICK THY THEME

SNOW
TEMPERATE
TROPICAL

PICK THY TERRAIN

MOUNTAINS
PLAINS
COASTAL
(includes multiple island type maps)

NAME THY CITY

Otherwise, I'm naming it Buttsville. Because I'm an adult.

SET THE FIRST RULE

Intersected - No Traffic Circles! Manage them intersections!

Cheek to Cheek - It's common practice to keep Industry zones away from Residential/Commercial. Lets change that. Industry zones must be located within or next to the other zones.

By your powers combined! - Use nothing but green energy and pollutant free zoning to make the city super healthy and clean.

_____________________________________________________
Author's Note: I don't know which format would be best for this kind of LP. There really isn't anything in the game that needs to be in a video. I feel like a SSLP would be plenty sufficient, considering we're planning roads and zoning. Thoughts?

Bringing the forums together with the greatest thread!
So I've been toying around with the idea of the amazingly complicated and impenetrable game Hollywood Movie Studio, a game about running a Hollywood movie studio. The idea is that the thread will be able to create up-and-coming actors and come up with all the ideas of the movies we will be producing.

My first concern so far is how to present the information in this incredibly menu-heavy game. Looking at the screen for writing a movie script, for example:

Am I correct I understanding that the forums have some kind of anti table breaking feature nowadays? I'd much prefer not having to break up every screen into several screenshots, but I'm also concerned that downsizing the screenshots would make the wall of statistics more annoying to read than it already is.

Edit: A quick look tells me that the forums indeed have some kind of anti table breaking feature! :woop: How is the readability for people? Since I'm on an incredibly small screen, I'm guessing it should be okay for anybody not using a phone?

Keep in mind that if you want your LP archived, the archives have a hard limit of 900 pixels wide for images.

Readability is doable for me, from a "can I read this" perspective, on a 1440p display with the browser taking 50% of the horizontal screen size. But it's definitely in the annoying to read ballpark.

Those big screenshots are OK if you want the reader to actually look at everything in the shot, but if you took that shot because you wanted to show us specifically, say, the roles section, then crop to just that section. It can be irritating to see a giant screenshot and have to hunt around for the part you're supposed to be paying attention to.

A good example of how to handle this issue is the recent LP of Shenzhen I/O. It has a similar information-density issue, which the LPer solved by doing a screenshot of everything, followed by cropped screenshots of individual "units" so they could be discussed in detail.

Covski

Bringing the forums together with the greatest thread!
Yeah, I definitely plan to use smaller screenshots for specific parts when needed, but I still want to be able to include the full screenshot for the sake of giving an overview for those interested in the nitty-gritty stuff. Generally I'll hope to be able to present any relevant information in text. I won't expect the thread to weigh in on the super specific settings (the game let's you micro-manage for example the specific quality of the electric or grips department - why you would ever want to do that is a different question), but I want to show off all stuff that goes into the movie, just for the record.

The second big question I'm dealing with is how much input to expect from the thread when, for example, submitting movie scripts. As you can see from the screenshot there are something like 20 variables to work with just in the screenplay as well as lots of fiddly bits for each role, which is a lot of effort to ask a poster to put in.

I'm leaning towards giving a lot of choice here with a minimum of "giving a short summary of the plot and vision for the movie and a short sentence about every main character, letting me fill in the blanks (and possibly also the scripts 5 main stats)", and letting people be as specific as they want if they have any particular ideas about any aspect of their movie.

Will baldurk delete the update numbers himself so they don't conflict with the archive pages? Can I ask for two updates to be combined instead if I had to split them due to length, or is that too much?

The LPArchive assigns new update numbers, as I recall, so if you have 27, 27.5, 28 then in the archive it'll show as 27, 28, 29...at least, in things like the URL and possibly the page title. All of your text will remain as normal so if you show it as 27.5 in your table of contents, or in bold text at the beginning of the update, that'll stay as normal.

If you have a table of contents that lists everything, then it will be presented on the archive in that order. So make sure your OP table of contents is absolutely flawless before sending it to baldurk.

You can just include a list of names for the updates in the email you send Baldurk for archiving the thread and he can work with that. It's only strictly necessary if your table of contents is made up of images rather than text, but it's simpler and easier to just always do it that way, since the scripts he uses to archive updates is apparently inconsistent on grabbing update names itself.

baldurk
Jun 21, 2005

If you won't try to find coherence in the world, have the courtesy of becoming apathetic.
As nine-gear crow says the important thing is to have a consistent and complete table of contents. Update names are pulled from there so as long as your TOC is complete and in-order you don't have to send me the list of titles - that's only generally needed when your table of contents consists of images but still links to forum posts, since then the scripts have nothing to grab.

Updates that are "X.5" will still be called X.5 but that will lead to inconsistent numbering after that point so it's up to you if you want that. E.g. The archive names every update "Part N" which starts from 1 and goes up to however many updates you have. If you have updates 1, 2, 3, 3.5, 4, 5 then you'll get update 4 being called part 5, and update 5 being called part 6.

If your title is prefixed with just a single number like "Chapter X" or "Update X" then that will be stripped so it doesn't look super weird "Part 5: Chapter 4: Blah", but if you have something more unusual like "Chapter X.5" then it will be left alone as "Part 4: Chapter 3.5: Blah". If you've used "Part" as your naming scheme then I change that to "Chapter" since otherwise it'd be *really* confusing to see "Part 5: Part 4: Blah". This only applies to the actual main titles, I don't ever change anything in the text so if you've called it Chapter 3.5 there then that will remain the same and contradict the page title and header.

It's up to you if you're OK with that really, if you're fine with it (as most people seem to be) then you can accept that the titling will be a bit weird for readers and it'll be archived like that.

Eventually I would like to combine the script and the recording with the visuals being still shots or video from the game. Anyway, that last part's neither here nor there; how about the posting the play thing? It comes out to over a hundred thousand words, I think, but I'd have to check. Roughly ten thousand words an episode.

Following up from the LP request thread...

I'm planning on starting an LP of Fire Emblem: Three Houses soon. The problem is, I'm still undecided on how to handle a key aspect of the game: recruitment. I need some advice on that front.

The easy answer is to just do max recruitment every route, which is my current plan. However, I'm not sure if that's the best idea, since it technically does lock off content (encountering certain units in battle later in the route). I'm also just not entirely sure it wouldn't get a bit boring from route-to-route.

On the other hand, doing max recruitment ensures that I never miss out on any paralogues or supports, and it also means that the LP doesn't miss unique dialogue from units during part 2, since every unit has unique things to say depending on the route.

Like I said, my current plan is to just do max recruitment every path. I'm more than open to hearing other ideas, though.

I feel like I may have suggested this before but I have no memory of you rendering a verdict on it so here we go again:

You're going to be doing many runs through the game. For any given student, you're going to want to have;

a) Obviously, one run when they start in your house and get plot cutscenes
b) One run where they get poached into your house
c) One run where they don't get poached

This will leave you with basically a surplus run per student, kinda. This should allow you plenty of leeway to accommodate viewer requests; you'll probably be able to do a whole bunch of getting that particular person on one particular run without locking out too much. Later runs will likely have less such interaction, helping you out considerably.

So here's my idea that I'm kicking around for Golf Story.

1) Do traditional updates with rotating co-commentators like before, but also:

2) Declare myself Golf Lord and attempt to defend my title through a series of rotating golf games I play with volunteers that will be more shitshow LPs.

There's an absolute ton of golf games out there, both traditional and non-traditional. Think: Mario Golf. Kirby Golf. Everybody's Golf. Spheda. 100 Foot Robot Golf. Golf With Your Friends. Golf It. Party Golf.

Each week I'll upload my normal videos but also invite people to challenge for my Golf Lord title. A set time each week.

Since most golf games are 4 player, I figure the best way to do it will be:

1) Me;
2) Someone I pick for entertainment purposes;
3) First Come First Serve;
4) A Challenge or Charity Donation. Second come second serve if no one does the donation or challenge.

Since the challengers are picking the game to play, I get to pick the course to play it on.

Winner with most points (me vs everyone else cumulatively) gets a golf trophy to be displayed in my beautiful living room.

Any suggestions? Any glaring holes?

And yes I will talk immense amounts of trash.

I think the game loses a lot of impact if allt he named enemies in part 2 are replaced by generics, and you are absolutely not intended to get full recruitment on a first run. I would definitely limit recruitment to like... one character per house, just enough to fill up your deployment slots, if not skip it entirely the first time through.
