Other grandpa did supply stuff in the Army in WWII. He didn't drink or smoke, so he had a lot of currency to trade with those who did. He came back with a bunch of cool stuff. He had this gigantic flag that was 15 feet across that used to hang in a German officer's club.

Here's a story about both an idiot and an actual badassBernard B. Fall posted:What Sgt. Kubiak did not know was that there was another Kubiak at Dien Bien Phu--and that he fought on the other side. He was Major Stefan Kubiak, a Pole born in 1923 in Lodz. The son of a poor weaver, Kubiak joined the Communist Polish Army after World War II. A good party member, he had been posted to the Army Political Commissars School. When he found that his wife was having a love affair with one of his superiors, Kubiak deserted from the Polish Army, drifted to West Germany, and eventually enlisted in the Foreign Legion. Sent to North Viet-Nam in 1947, he soon was disillusioned with the French and deserted from the Foreihn Legion in 1947 at Nam Dinh in the Red River Delta.

Scratch Monkey posted:At the time you probably could have. It wasn't like now back then. There were so many weapons arriving, being distributed, getting used, destroyed, lost to capture... it was almost impossible to give a gently caress. The invention of containerization is one of those quiet things that changed the world. Back in the day cargo was break bulk (just put into random compartments) so it was common for dockworkers and plugged in gangs to swipe poo poo. Now it’s actually easy to secure/track/conceal cargo you can actually expect almost everything you ship to arrive. I read somewhere that like at least 25% of all cargo would end up missing by the time it got to its destination.

Two thirds of the cargo of Walter Raleigh's largest prize was stolen in port https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Flores_(1592)#Mass_theft quote:Madre de Deus attracted all manner of traders, dealers, cutpurses and thieves from miles around, from as far as London and beyond. At seeing this huge vessel, pandemonium broke out amongst the townspeople; they visited the floating castle and sought out drunken sailors in taverns and pubs, buying, stealing, pinching and fighting for the takings. Local fishermen as well ventured aboard, further depleting the cargo.[1]
