Nehruvian socialism was a joke. Social democratic politics can't do jack poo poo when you leave people mired in landlordism and caste prejudice.

The "bootstrapping" rhetoric about Chinese innovation makes sense, only within the context that Chinese farmers lease their land from the communes and can profit from its produce. These conditions were only possible because of communist rule, because it could never have happened without the Maoists doing a landlord classicide.

the india vs china thing is more about social democracy vs communism than neoliberalism vs communism, that reformism was not enough compared to the radical revolutionary change china underwent to create conditions for development.

its a bit too reductive but some truth to it imo

caste prejudice is probably the single weirdest political issue in india because even though it was gandhis big thing and indian social democratic politicians have always raved against it theyve never actually done anything about it they act like what makes the caste system bad is that it applies labels at birth and seem genuinely confused about the notion that those labels are just signifiers of inherited wealth and that taking away the first without going after the second doesn't really do anything

Wow you mean they are against prejudice by birth but don't care about its obvious economic effects? First time I've heard of that

i think the reason indian liberals like calling it the caste system problem so much is that it makes it sound exotic and quintessentially indian and not a problem held by literally every known civilization coincidentally this is also why the british loved to talk about the caste system so much

Yeah, it's why it doesn't matter that Dalits can become millionaires. Alright that might happen in one or two cases, but what about the 200 million other Dalits? It's like trotting out a black businessman and pretending there's no racial wealth gap in the United States.

The Mote in God's Eye

also y'all have been having a conversation on India and China's development

well, Tom "the chin" Friedman wants to join this AOL chatroom!!

Friedman: How Tump and Xi can both win the trade war

and it is very weird, because friedman makes up what trump thinks, and then makes up what Xi thinks

so the entire article is very

and mentions as he always does that chinese manufacturing "made piddling poo poo so them breaking all the international laws" didn't matter, but it does now because for the first time China is moving into high tech"

brooks says dumb things, friedman says dumb things over and over again

anyway, here are the funny bits/bits that might make you say "oh this is good then"

quote:

If the current trade dispute tips over into a full-blown economic war — and that spreads to Chinese students and scientists being thrown out of America and American business executives out of China and that spreads to all the investments we’ve made in each other’s countries being ripped out — the world as we’ve known it for the last four decades is going to be replaced

my stemlords and investments :qq:

quote:

We need a cease-fire now — and if no one else is going to propose the terms, I will.

:nallears:

quote:

“For the next six months, we’ll suspend all the tariffs that we’ve imposed. And in those six months we expect you to order from the top down an end to your worst trade abuses — and you know which ones we’re talking about : stealing intellectual property, forcing technology transfers, restricting access, etc. You don’t have to announce anything or put anything into law. Just get it done your own way and tell your people whatever you want. I won’t tweet a word to embarrass you. And we’ll re-evaluate in six months whether the results constitute meaningful progress.’’

I love the idea that trump would ever choose to not to try and embarrass someone given that option, and even in big dumb tom's attempt at face saving it still comes across as insulting to the Chinese

file this in "accidental truth telling":

quote:

For instance, it takes about 22 hours on Amtrak to go by train from New York to Chicago. Beijing to Shanghai is about the same distance, and it takes China’s bullet train 4.5 hours to make that trip. That’s not a typo. And it partly explains why a lot of Chinese officials look at America today as a dysfunctional mess that elected a crazy man as president and that can’t build anything big and hard anymore because it can’t act together.

quote:

they wanted China to enact laws and regulations that would outlaw stealing of intellectual property, forced technology transfers, certain government subsidies, and to create a U.S.-China mechanism to verify compliance — it might have been too much change all at once for the Chinese system. That’s not an excuse for Beijing

That 's an excuse for Beijing

quote:

But now that China wants to sell us many of the same high-tech products that America and Europe make — from 5G infrastructure to cellphones to advanced electronics — products that get deeply embedded in our society and can be dual use (civilian and military), we need a whole new level of trust between our societies.

For the first time in human history, technology has more than one implication

the stupid hurts me

there's also some - and I'm not joking about this - friedman saying the communist government of the PRC should not be overthrown by Trump and co with his radical free market trade proposals because chaos, not democracy would ensue in china, take that as you like

CONCLUDE:

quote:

a more rational, long-term discussion about rules and avoiding a new Cold War with China that will destabilize the whole globalization system

Hiring assholes is the business model. The NY Times opinion section has been widely mocked across the spectrum for decades. They generate clicks by being insanely lame.

Like most of the media, the news section is just grinding the radical centrism axe and perpetuating myths about how American power and politics work. Bernie is so offensive to them that they have a person following him around writing total bullshit, in both tone and fact.

ahahahaha, this article even lists some stuff we missed

quote:

The memo was a reaction to just the latest social-media controversy involving the newspaper of record: pro-Trump outlet Breitbart News resurfaced Times senior staff editor Tom Wright-Piersanti’s decade-old tweets that included insensitive anti-Semitic comments. He apologized for the posts.

hmm, this article doesn't say what kind of "insensitive" comments they were. let's ask google

apparently, this mostly got coverage from right-wing sites, while the liberal media appears to have given it little attention

quote:

Tom Wright-Piersanti, a senior editor at the New York Times, said Thursday that he is “deeply” sorry for some past tweets and that they have been deleted.

“I have deleted tweets from a decade ago that are offensive. I am deeply sorry,” he wrote.

Tweets cited by Breitbart no longer appear on Wright-Piersanti’s page and include a January 2010 message saying, “I was going to say ‘Crappy Jew Year,’ but one of my resolutions is to be less anti-Semitic. So… HAPPY Jew Year. You Jews.”

Another seemingly deleted tweet reported by Breitbart references the “Jew-police.”

Two that have not been deleted make jokes about individuals of Indian descent and Mohawk Indians.

“There are four indian guys with mohawks in this one class, and each one is a douche in his own awful way. I hate mohawk Indians,” says the first tweet.

“I don’t hate Mohawk Indians, though. I love those guys. I just hate Indians with mohawks. Different indians, different mohawks,” says the second.

A New York Times spokesperson told TheWrap, “We are aware of these tweets, which are a clear violation of our standards. We are reviewing next steps.”
