The worst of the winds are going to stay well offshore on the other side of the storm, where those borderline 200 gusts are

This analysis shows with the last Euro run what kind of winds some areas could be experiencing. The worse would probably be for PBC, then the Carolinas as the current path of the storm has it brushing Charleston and Wilmington

Focusing just on the winds is stupid. Vast majority of damage happens from the storm surge and even inland flooding. Also using one model is dumb. The consensus has been shifting the turn further west.

This is an insanely powerful storm and it is loving up the northern Bahamas already.

Yeah that's really the bright spot for us in the Carolinas, almost anything is better than the absolute biblical rain of last year. If it just buzzes the tower of Myrtle Beach/Wilmington, I'll be happy

Being at the tip of that mid Atlantic ridge really draws hurricanes here huh

Our weather models still really struggle with intensity forecasts. Especially storms like this, which are at the edge of the envelope of what is physically possible on Earth.

Storm surge watch for chunk of FL coast. Tropical storm warning with a hurricane watch (potential for upgrade).

So this is the basic uncertainty of this hurricane. It seems likely to turn north but where the turn occurs, either over Florida or over the ocean east of Florida is unknown.

There is a high pressure ridge in the midwest right now as well as in the Atlantic ocean. The more western high pressure wasn't expected to move and the models had Dorian going right into Florida.

However a large thunderstorm around Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas developed yesterday and the models saw that pushing the high pressure eastward and potentially making Dorian turn north. I have labeled a cone of uncertainty showing the likely path of the northward movement.

As the high pressure is pushed eastward Dorian will slide slowly but firmly up the coast before a second low pressure will quickly blow Dorian near Cape Hatteras to shoot out into the Atlantic ocean.

Dorian has unexpectedly sped up a bit. Back to 8mph. The eye has also drifted south a bit. Both might be related to a developing low pressure system in the Gulf. This means that the chances of a northward turn and a Florida miss are decreasing.

Still strengthening too.

This is why Florida is still in play and in the cone. Some models still suggest a hit, plus it will very likely be getting close enough to cause impacts.
