Individuals are unable to address systemic issues as the systems involved have long ago grown beyond any one person or even group of people - but we still want an individual solution we can do now, whether that's banning plastic straws, cancelling the chapos, or going full fash. At the end of the day we're all a bunch of tiny cogs who realize that we're about to tear ourselves apart and then melt and there's no way for any of us to do anything meaningful in the time we have. Hail satan.

There is definitely some weird cognitive dissonance going on with chapo making loads of money. Until it starts actually influencing their material it's not really an issue.

Considering that they're not exploiting anyone to get that money (unless you want to argue that they are exploiting credulous saps who don't use the Black Wolf feed, in which case, fair enough), I don't see the cognitive dissonance.

He must be a millionaire!' When you actually get to 'how much money are the chapos actually making off this' it's more in the 'doing just fine and probably not having to stress about things unless there's an emergency' side of things than 'they are the elite among us!'

Yeah, they haven't seen any need to do any research or go beyond hot takes. Don't see the money influencing them at all.

There are 3-location hair salon businesses that make more per year than Chapo. There are Dave and Busters locations that make more than Chapo. I’m a nobody database nerd and I’m pulling down more per year than the individual Chapos. People who complain about the money have no loving concept of the world they live in, and are sheltered rubes. They’re like toddlers when you ask them how much a cookie costs.

But who cares, it's people supporting them that want to support them.

They're getting hung up on 'yea ok so they're making ok money but they're just recording two podcasts where they read Ross Douthat articles and make obscure twitter jokes for it'. Ironically those people are also the ones half-assed trying to use Marxist language about capital and labor value and poo poo so woops.

For what it’s worth, I think chapo is genuinely doing good things: for me personally, they introduced me to Derek Davidson and his extremely good Foreign Affairs newsletter, and motivated me to be active in my union. It’s very reductive for these Twitter ransoms to squeal and call it a grift when it’s also genuinely good outreach for leftist causes.

I think Chapo fits into a similar space as Rage Against the Machine did years ago, which is that they're an (increasingly) mainstream way of exposing impressionable folks to left politics.

the best way to describe Chapo is that clip of one of them talking about european fans saying they love the show, it's funny and they have good convos and all, but they don't know who their 'friends' they make inside jokes about are, and it turns out those 'friends' are the niche rear end columnists they dunk on because yea no poo poo most people don't know who fuckin Sunny Bunch is.
