I was skeptical at first and gradually picked up the first four books from the library where it was only available on the preserved corpses of trees. Since then a friend gave me his copies of all 10 main books for my birthday.

It seems to come in bursts - you'll get a bit when someone is talking about the Chain of Dogs or the House of Chains, and then nothing for a decent few pages until you get to one of the four or five people who are literally/figuratively in chains.

Preternatural: 32
Potsherds: 29
Abnegation: 9 (but half of them in tCG) (also what is the difference between negation and abnegation? More negation?)
Inequity: 26
Welter: 28
Subcontinent: 14

Most of these are way less common than I thought they'd be, but he seems to really favour them in certain books. Potsherds and subcontinent are almost entirely in the Seven Cities arc, inequity in the Letheras arc, etc

Weird... I would have sworn that crepuscular was in GotM because I remember a friend giving me a hard time about trying to get him to read a book with such an unfamiliar word in it, only for it to pop up in an episode of Archer later that month. But a search on that website said it wasn't in GotM. Maybe I am going crazy.

Just a random question.

Spoilers regarding Sinn I guess

Is it ever explained how Sinn goes from being a young woman when Kalam meets her to becoming a child later or is that just one of those things that changed suddenly with no explanation?

Just general timeline fuzziness and vagueness about her age. She's definitely not a young woman in HoC though. Kalam is surprised at a person her age being in charge, and then immediately thinks "gently caress, she might be even younger"

She's like perpetually the same age as the Stranger Things kids, but Grubb somehow grows up to match her.

The first time she shows up in HoC it literally says "the woman approaching was young, slight and pallid" which is what confused me because that seems a whole lot older than she seems later.

Sinn's age is one of those weird things that seems to vary from book to book, along with her personality. People have tried to reconcile it as "Oh she's just somewhere in the middle" but I think it's just one of those Malazan things that changes with no explanation.

Going through Toll The Hounds again and I'm still not sure what the point of the Dying God storyline is to the overall narrative.

It feels like something written in to give the young goths something to do, and to justify the inclusion of the Black Coral segments since, I suppose, having Rake just turn up unannounced in Darujhistan at the end would be a big "huh?" moment. Also, I suppose it wraps up Clip's story by the end, although I doubt anyone would have missed him if he hadn't been in the book..
I guess you could also argue it reinforces the idea of Mother Dark in readiness for the last 2 books, but her monologue in TCG would work fine without the discussion of her here.

Honestly, it mostly reads like someone once asked Erikson so what happened to Bellurdan, anyway? and he felt it was worth answering.
Now I think about it, it also seems to undermine quite a bit of the discussion of the Crippled God from Reaper's Gale - all that stuff about the relationship between worshipers and the god(s) they worship.

Reaper's Gale

I really liked this one, mainly because of the giant clusterfuck that is the Leetheri Empire. The edur doesn't know what do once they're the ruling class. the leether uses this confusion to try and colonize everyone that hugely backfires, Tehol is working towards ruining the empire and then the malazans arrive. Then you have the group of Slichasm Udinaas, Fear and Seren where everyone hates each other, constantly tries to kill or at least hurt each other and it all ends as well as you could expect.

I also have begun to enjoy the 14th more than the bridgeburners, mainly because of how dysfunctional they are. Bottle may be a good mage but he's also one goony motherfucker, Hellion is constantly drunk and only succeed because of her fellow soldiers helping her (yet she is the only one who figures out how to get the civilians on their side), Tavore is basically an automaton badly disguised as a human and Smiles::::stare:

Reaper's Gale is where Smiles thinks that Deathskull is gay and plan to turn him, Deathskull believes that Hellian is a queen and wants to gently caress her while Hellian can't even remember his name.

The sad part about Toll the Hounds is how much better it is after the Kharkhanas series.

Midnight Tides represents a bit of a challenge, as it pans away from areas and characters we're familiar with in a more dramatic way than previously (from memory the only person in the book we've seen before is Trull Sengar). But it really is worth it in the long run, when it starts to tie together in subsequent books in a very satisfying way.

It did require a touch more willpower for me than previous books though, and it is where my reading of the series to my wife ended up stumbling, for the reason above (along with our children selfishly existing and having needs).

I find Bugg and Tehol genuinely grating. Erikson is funniest when he isn't jumping up and down shouting about how witty his dialogue his.

And the sex comedy with dubious consent is really loving uncomfortable, and detracts from the juicy Tiste Edur melodrama.

I really like Feather Witch's prophecy and all the stuff with the Holds, because it kind of lines up with everything else the reader knows is going on, but because its an orthogonal system to Warrens/Deck of Dragons you can't match anything one-to-one.

I guess that's a valid point of view, but I think a lot of their dialogue is very witty (and continues to be in later books). Moreover I like the relationship they have, and find it funny how it remains similar even after Tehol becomes aware of who Bugg really is.

Yeah. I like MT a lot but the book could easily have done without Ublala and whatsherface the undead thief.

Toll the Hounds, on the other hand, is pretty weak for like 80%, completely loving nuts for the remaining 20% and practically begging for a reread once you delve into Kharkanas and find out everything you thought you knew about Tiste is loving wrong.

You got to ask yourself. Do you trust the book written by a tortured god of a different dimension or the epic poem from a bard who literally admits on near the first page he's making most of it up?

The first 150-200 pages of Midnight Tides were a bit of a slog, but it's been slowly picking up pace again as it seems the majority of the players are on the field now. Or at least introduced finally. And that was my issue; throwing an almost entirely new hooligan's gallery at me at a casual pace. And I checked the charts in the OP, I knew this was coming.

After a failed start a few months ago, I'm back into Gardens of the Moon and I'm a little of half done. What started out as a pretty standard high fantasy story (even if I didn't know what was going on) has turned into weirdness and I'm loving it (even if I still don't know what's going on).

300,000 year old skeleton warriors? Tattersail turning into a zombie and then being rebirthed as a baby? Kruppe being the best fantasy character I've ever read? Quick Ben traversing the lands of chaos and death?

Man this book is cool.

edit--- Haha, whoa apparently I tried to start GotM 5 years ago and posted in this thread, but I don't even remember it.
