When people were fretting over Knut the Polar Bear cub, everyone was saying he's fine in captivity or he should be released or sent elsewhere. PETA said that he should be released, then immediately killed because he had been "tainted" by man.

Lots of game parks the world over that farm wild game, many species that would be on the brink of extinction if they weren't being farmed for hunting, PETA wants them all euthanized because they think extinct is better than helped by man.

PETA is for straight up psychopaths.

A therapy pony visits a home for old people suffering from dementia. From https://www.hs.fi/kaupunki/helsinki/art-2000006246628.html

Apparently the residents might've forgotten everything about their old life, even how to speak, but the presence of a big friendly animal suddenly wakes them up to walk and talk again. One man suddenly started speaking again and handling him like a pro and it turned out he had owned horses decades ago and that memory remained, even if almost everything else had already been wiped out. :unsmith:

Horses have a really weird effect on people. Just like dogs, we've been living with them for so long parts of our brain have grown to respond to them. We have no idea what it means or why it happens.

Some places hand out dolls or toy pets to dementia patients.
They nurse the dolls/pets as if real, and it makes them happy.

For real.

A week ago I had my first real interaction with a horse. Last time I was even near one must've been 25 years ago when I was 7, but last week a kid that was staying with me had her first lessons at a new stable and even though she was familiar with the horses there from previous visits she wanted me to come to set her at ease.

Now I'm a tall motherfucker, 6"8', but the horse she was going to ride could pretty much look me in the eyes. It was huge, and at first I'm a bit nervous because 1) it's the first time I can properly remember I'm around a horse and 2) this animal is big enough that if it throws a fit it could easily kill us both.

But this 11 year old girl is absolutely at ease with it. Pulling it this way and that, scolding it when it doesn't do what she wants, so I take comfort in that. She's brushing it and I'm staying at a bit of a distance, but then she needs to clean the hooves and apparently he doesn't really like that so need to keep a hold of his reins because that makes him at ease?

Sure, alright, I can do that. So I'm holding on to this animal that can potentially kill us while she's pulling on his legs to clean the hooves and all the while I'm thinking "just one kick. One kick will end her" but whatever they wouldn't let us do this if there were any real risk so I'll just go with it.

And it was like the horse knew I was nervous but wanted to help me. He started sniffing me and pushing his nose against my hand as if to say "look, just pet me and I'll be fine. This is uncomfortable but really, just relax, let me help you help me" and this calmth came over me. This huge rear end animal put me at ease so he could be at ease and it was amazing.

I've always been kind of derisive of 'horse girls' but after that one experience I kind of get it. Horses are blessed, even if we don't need them anymore for agriculture.

I'm just glad there weren't any ants around.
