Yea I flip between a Corrosive-Shock SMG and a Icnendiary-Radiation SMG. Got the element for every situation, high magazine capacity so my Botttomless Mags tree does work, decent damage as one of them fires 2 bullets per shot. What more could you ask for!

Unlike in BL2, COV doesnt make shotguns or smgs anymore. Both Atlas and COV only make Pistols, ARs, and heavy weapons, fewer types than any other manufacturer. Atlas guns also dont ever seem to be elemental for some reason? And Hyperion pistols are conspicuously missing as well. I have a sneaking suspicion some of these were cut for time and we'll see them added in down the road.

I like the Calypso twins almost as much as Jack. Jack's threat was corporate, while their threat is personal. It's a step backward in the sense that "bad guy is personally powerful" is a more common vidya game trope than "bad guy is basically just really rich and has a galactic corporation to hound you with" but a step forward in the game's commentary on cults of personality and influence, and on fake news.

Some Gearbox employees and their independent contractors deserve a pat on the back for the radio programming, especially the COV stuff, and for the Typhon content.

This is, sadly, more important to me than bettering myself.

I am genuinely surprised that they made any attempts at balance changes before 2020. Maybe they'll address Iron Bear's late game HP issue next go around.

Also, I was expecting Katagawa to try and play the twins against each other until the Atlas boss fight. Same with the Aurelia - the Sacked! storyline even played into that one.

Just completed the first runthrough at level 40 FL4K, orange skilltree followed by green (I forget the names). Played entirely solo. Excellent game and easily the best in the Borderlands series gameplaywise. I went in pretty much completely blind, not knowing about any new mechanics or anything because I don't follow preview stuff anymore.

I'm one of those guys who didn't really read too much into the Borderlands stories (With the exception of Tales From The Borderlands, which is excellent) so even though there was some wackadoodle poo poo in this one it didn't really bother me. With a few exceptions the humour actually wasn't so bad and didn't feel quite as forced as Borderlands 2's and Tyreen and Troy actually grew on me a fair amount, especially Troy starting to come forward as the assertive one before he died.

Weirdly I barely got anything useful in the way of assault rifles. There was a COV one at the beginning of the game, but after that? Nothing. All other weapon types, though? Sure.

Things I really liked:

• This really goes without saying but the gunplay, feedback and movement are the best they've ever been and it's not just "Good for a looter shooter, I guess" that tends to be the standard for these games - combat is genuinely solid and fun throughout the entire duration of the game. Mantling is really useful and I love any game with a slide move. Ragdolling enemies with your guns and explosions are hilarious and man, those reload animations are solid gold.

• The loot. Spot. On. It took two games and shitloads of DLC but they've finally learned that finding new toys constantly is fun for everyone and my weaponary enjoyed a full spread of types, elements, ranges and manufacturers. A lot of this is helped by a lack of emphasis on characters specialising in certain weapons which means I was free to enjoy anything that looked cool and man was it a lot of fun. I really enjoy how diverse the stats were for all the different relics and so on and I took loads of pictures of my favourite weapons.

• Solid cosmetic diversity. I know some people don't appreciate these sorts of things because they muddy the loot tables but looking cool is important to me in my loot games and Borderlands 3 does a fantastic job. I'm still reeling from the sheer amount of paintjobs for vehicles and how cool some of the clothing shaders are. I don't even have that many, I'm excited to find more on my travels.

• The manufacturer improvements. I'll reiterate something I said earlier in the thread: If BL2 gave the manufacturers personality, BL3 gave them depth. In the end I used a wide spread of weapons across all manufacturers and had a great time with all of them. I bankrupted myself on bank SDUs because there were so many guns I had a wonderful time shooting and just had to save them for another character.

• Player character dialogue. FL4K has become one of my favourite characters in the entire series due to this reason and it's made me really want to try out the others to see their responses, particularly Zane. It's something I wish this series introduced sooner because beloved characters in the franchise could've been even better if they spoke up more in their games. FL4K in particular is wonderfully written and his voiceacting is never anything less than absolutely captivating.

• Vehicle customisation. Yeah, the driving sucks in Borderlands, I get it, but I still have fun driving the cars around and man they look, sound and feel badass in this game. There's a great variety of options and pimping out a doom chariot is so much fun for me.

• Photo mode. Sure, I'll market your game for you. All games should have a photo mode or ideally a playback option.

• Sanctuary III changing throughout the game with new NPCs. I love this kind of thing in any game and even playing solo it makes your home base feel alive.

• I don't know if they were going for Woke Points™ but I appreciate the attempts and amount of representation in this game. Hammerlock and Wainwright are just lovely and there's a really solid roster of ladies in the cast.

• Claptrap takes a loving backseat and is about a third as grating because of it. This is still 400% more grating than all the other characters but that's his shtick and after 3 games you can't really say you're not expecting it.

• The length and the sheer amount of content. Holy goddamn hell it kept going. I began outleveling the content so I made a beeline to the end and it still took far longer than I thought it would. I couldn't decide whether this was a good thing or not initially, but frankly these days the more game the better.



Things I didn't like:

• The UI. It's god loving awful still and a complete shitshow on the PC. It loses focus, lags, requires you to remember a poo poo-ton of shortcuts and is all around a pain in the arse to use.

• Boss fights. I'm kind of on the fence because it's not like I hated them and they were better than BL2's, but they were formulaic to a fault and just kind of clunky.

• Lack of character presence in the cutscenes. They work so hard on giving your character a voice and appropriate responses and then they have no presence at all when it comes to the major story beats. I get that this is a technical issue with co-op and stuff but goddamn is it frustrating to see.

• Give me a bigger living quarters drat it

• Vaughn. I loved this guy in TFTB but eaaurgh he grates hard in this game. Rhys is still pretty decent, though.

• Pet AI while exploring. Get out of my face, Spiderant, please, go away, stop, go, no

Manufacturer opinions:

I can't not talk about the manufacturers because the guns are one of my favourite things about this franchise (duh) and they did such an amazing job with them this time round. No particular order.

Dahl was one of the most boring or irritating manufacturers for me in Borderlands 2 because of how their guns operated. They wound up being one of my favourites in Borderlands 3. Manually selecting your fire mode is how it should've worked in the first place, I loved the transforming scopes (And sometimes even dual sighted scopes, which is awesome) and they always look so drat fine. They're not flashy like some of the other weapons but they're so reliable, so balanced, and so slick. Also, full auto sniper rifles that surpass Vladof's.

Vladof is one of my favourite manufacturers in the series because I'm a fire rate freak and I simply adore them being taken to the next level by including secondary weapon modes on their guns. Not only do their weapons look awesome, particularly the rocket launchers and sniper rifles, they're super versatile too. That being said, I didn't get as many useful weapons as I would've liked from them this playthrough, but the ones that I did use were fantastic. Seeing that you could switch fire modes with my first gun being a Vladof in this game made me realise that BL3 was gonna be something special.

Maliwan I'll admit that I didn't get too much use from during my runthrough, but I got a legendary shotgun called the Trevonator around level 34 which carried me all the way through to the endgame. I like how they look and operate, multiple elements being a smart way to advance the manufacturer's shtick, but an initial playthrough doesn't call for elemental versatility much. That being said, I did have a few guns - usually SMGs - that were good against the Maliwan forces early on. I wish fire mode switch speed was a stat or gun part for these weapons because sometimes it felt like flipping the switch was less effective than just sticking with the current element.

TORGUE KICKS MAJOR rear end IN THIS GAME AND YOU'LL PROBABLY BE USING ONE EXTENSIVELY IN YOUR PLAYTHROUGH. They're stupidly fun and satisfying, and the most prone to having absurd firing mechanics in comparison to the other manufacturers. They also look super stylish in this game and the ones with plane wings and car exhausts made me laugh out loud when I first saw them.

COV guns are so cool appearancewise and their gimmick is a good and fun one, but they're impractical for a first runthrough until you've invested heavily in SDUs. That being said, I got a lot of decent use out of their pistols and their ARs are really good as well. I really love the fact they're started with motors.

Jakobs are as no-frills as ever, and while they've always been one of the more "dull" manufacturers to me goddamn do their guns look, sound and feel amazing to use in BL3. Mosin-nagant style pings when you're out of ammo, some of the coolest reload animations in the game (You eject and reload only the bullets you use in revolvers!), and some of the prettiest goddamn textures and parts makes them feel like genuine luxury guns. The ricochet mechanic is nice and adds a little bit of spice to a straightforward manufacturer.

Tediore had exactly one gun I got some decent use out of in my playthrough but you better believe I tried out a bunch of the wackier ones. They're a joke manufacturer, really, but I can't lie: I adore the fact that their guns can vary so wildly in their mode of operation just because of the parts that are attached to it. When I did get a good gun, a solid pistol that acted like a MIRV longbow and had a very high ammo count (and therefore damage in the several thousands - at level 20 or so), I was in love. The sound work and appearance of the weapons are perfect in this game, too.

ATLAS was a manufacturer the game was particularly shy about giving me anything useful from which was a shame because I think their gimmick is great fun. The few weapons I did have, though, worked fantastically and you feel like a smug prick hiding behind some corner somewhere picking enemies off. I got a legendary rocket launcher called the Freeman which made me laugh hard when I found out what it did. The appearance of those weapons are clever, too. The vastly different style makes them stand out very boldly against the others.

Hyperion were solid throughout my playthrough, and while I ultimately didn't spend a lot of time with them outside of sniper rifles (Of which high-end ones are wonderful to play with), I did have a good few shotguns and SMGs which really did the job nicely when I needed them.

I know a lot of people dislike the legendary weapons because they're so gimmicky but I saved each and every one I had. I'm not a min/maxer so the weird poo poo the game spat at me was well worth a look, especially because I felt so bummed out that BL2 was so stingy with giving me anything nice.

I might lay out some more thoughts later but for now I'm itching to get my last 10 levels and getting a new set of guns to use. Off I go!

Oh well.

And why do they keep nerfing the loot in a loot game when people are going to grind trying to get the perfect version of Legendary x hundreds of times anyway? It was so cool for me, a player of average time to commit, to finally see legendaries semi-regularly. Especially when so many of them are gimmick tier silly things like the fire flower pistol or the shotgun that fires a single huge BFG orb that moves at 2 miles an hour.

I actually found it kind of interesting how Tyreen seemed to be sincerely attached to Troy, much as she'd deny it. Like, she saw him as an annoying parasite, yes, but he was still her brother, and she always went out of her way to keep him alive and living pretty well at significant cost to herself, despite being an all-devouring hedonistic black hole in all other regards. That and other details made her feel strangely innocent in a way that, say, Jack wasn't.

Re: Ending and the villains: I actually kind of appreciated that there wasn’t actually a power struggle between the two at the end of it all. There’s a lot of themes about family loyalty and what makes family throughout the plot, and it’s kind of refreshing that Troy and Tyreen’s brother/sister bickering really was just that in the end. The two major corporate villains in the game were sibling murdering backstabbers, but the Calypsos never really betrayed each other, just had minor squabbles.

I got a Jakobs revolver called The Companion the other night and it's straight up busted on Fl4k. It ignites the enemy every time it crits and has a pretty huge magazine by Jakobs standards, like 14 or 16 shots. Granted this was at level 32, but I went to test it out on Graveward and it will take off about 1/3 of it's health per Fade Away depending on how fast I can mash my shoot button. It's not even the burn doing the lion's share of damage, it just hits like a truck by my level standards.

Yeah I'm with the other people that assumed Troy was gonna be the final boss or at least try to usurp Tyreen. I was really surprised they played it so straight as an arrow, the twins' dynamic is easily the least interesting part of the story to me, they never evolve in any way.

Tyreen even seems a little freaked out when Katagawa talks about murdering his siblings. I can see how there might have ended up being a Calypso civil war in some cut content, but it definitely wouldn't have been her firing the first shot.

If they just let you have loot without spending a few hundred hours to get it then you wouldn't appreciate it. Let me tell you why modern games have caved to casuals and how my lack of opportunity cost is an asset.

The bonkers guns are cool and all but the maxed out character stat skills really make the game insane. poo poo like virtually unkillable character builds who get bonus damage for having 1 health and massive shields, or ones that activate the action ability once and chain it to almost every mob in the area for massive damage.

Some of it feels like breaking the game but with the exceptions of exploits & bugged stuff, it's really not. The game's supposed to be that bonkers. You're supposed to melt bosses and armies of high level enemies in no time. (Just not in the broken way that for example, a bugged radiation grenade they just hotfixed was doing.)

Moze had a couple good lines, but my favorite is definitely her Echo recording you find in Sanctuary.

    Maliwan weapons had reduced overall damage because they applied elemental DoTs at a rate and damage greatly above other manufacturers. This effect was toned down before launch, but the overall damage was not sufficiently adjusted to compensate for the reduction in elemental DoTs. We’re adding back some of the overall damage and making the weapons faster so elemental builds can really take advantage of Maliwan weaponry.
    All Maliwan Weapon Damage increased by 25%
    All Maliwan Weapon Fire Rate increased by 20%

    Atlas Manufacturer
    Atlas weapons relied on a game loop that we felt gave players a greater advantage when used correctly. Turns out the loop is not used if the damage doesn’t compensate for the time to set up. So now damage on Atlas weapons should facilitate players using them in general on top of feeling badass when they take advantage of Atlas technology.
    All Atlas Weapon Damage increased by 25%

    Miscellaneous Adjustments
    The Jakobs Assault Rifle change was to differentiate the Assault Rifle from the pistol as more of a mid to long range powerhouse. Since the Assault Rifles have low mag sizes compared to other Assault Rifles, they’re getting a slight increase to overall damage to compensate. DAHL SMGs had their Fire Rates adjusted down before launch but their damage was never sufficiently increased so they should feel more appropriate compared to other SMGs. And the Vladof Heavy Weapon damage has been increased to share in the full Heavy Weapon treatment.
    Jakobs Assault Rifles Damage increased by 20%
    DAHL SMG Damage increased by 10%
    Vladof Heavy Weapon Damage increased by 25%
    E-Tech TEDIORE Shotgun Damage increased by 50%

    Legendary Modifications
    We’re going to be making a larger, comprehensive Legendary gear pass but we have included the following changes. King’s and Queen’s Call were modified to lower the fire rate. The weapon has a limited burst shot count so overall feel of the gun isn’t dramatically affected.
    King’s and Queen’s Call Fire Rate reduced by 50%
    Firestorm and Storm base Charge Times were reduced to 1 second (down from 2)

    Graveward
    Graveward’s beam attacks did not properly scale based on level so at higher levels, the two beam attacks hardly phased players. Players will find his attacks to be more lethal now. In addition, Graveward is a very large enemy and is too easily susceptible to elemental damage unlike the other large bosses. Elemental damage on Graveward is now greatly reduced but to compensate, Graveward’s overall health was reduced.
    Attacks of Graveward now scale based on level
    Reduced overall health by 20%
    Increased resistances to Elemental Damage
    - Elemental Chance Resistance increased by 70%
    - Elemental Resistances increased by 30%
    - Elemental DoT Duration taken reduced by 30%

    Miscellaneous Changes
    Hollow Point Guardian Rank has been temporarily disabled. We plan on addressing this further in a future patch.
    Vault Hunters should no longer scream when affected by a DoT while shields are active.
    Vending Machines will now be restocked with higher quality “Items of the Day”.
    Adjusted a visual concern on Maliwan Shotguns with Cryo Element.
    Legendary loot drops have been balanced throughout the game. Crew Challenge enemies will drop their intended specific loot, and some enemies like Troy and Rampager will be a bit more stingy and no longer drop Legendaries every kill.

    Vault Hunter Adjustments

    Zane
    Zane’s gadgets were great at providing additional utility but lacked impact as players leveled up. We increased the Digi-Clone damage with all equipped weapon so the skill can scale better with players as they get to higher levels and harder content. The Drone requires a lot of player involvement to take full advantage of its damage output and increasing the base damage as well as the augments will greatly increase the Drone’s versatility and reward players even more for using it effectively.
    Digi-Clone Damage Increased by 38%
    Drone Damage increased by 50%
    - Cryo Bullets damage penalty removed
    - Drone Rocket damage increased by 50%
    - Almighty Ordnance Rockets damage increased by 75%

    Amara
    Guardian Angel health restoration reduced from 100% to 50%
    Glamour damage penalty reduced from -30% to -10%

    FL4K
    Guerillas in the Mist’s bonuses greatly outweighed its penalty to the base skill. We don’t want to remove the playstyle completely, but the overall damage output had to be slightly adjusted because it was outperforming other builds. We’re monitoring the changes and may make another change to the ammo return in a future patch.

Although unlike him I don't think most of the jokes landed very well in 1 & 2 either. But they do seem a bit more unfunny overall here.

My problem with the twins is that they never adjust their relationship with you as the game goes on. Handsome Jack starts off with smug rear end banter only to get a little testier as you survive one second longer then his plans required until he hits full on vendetta and recends his bounty on your head because he wants to do it himself. You get to bewilder and frustrate and occasionally disgust Jack. By comparison the Twins never really care what you get up to because half the time it's something that works in their favor and they have what might as well be an endless number of bandits that mean nothing to them so shoot as many as you like.

Even at the end of the game and Troy is dead by your hand Tyreen is more interested in spiting Lilith and her dad then really focusing on you.

Yeah. The story in B3 is focused on these other weakly written characters you don't care about, not you, the vault hunter.

Handsome Jack made you the focus of his wrath and hate, which built over the course of the game. Giving him that cathartic final bullet was personal and satisfying.

That said - the detour arcs where the focus isn't quite on you are not a problem. (Like the swamp planet and atlas stuff. That stuff was fun and it is okay to focus on solving someone else's problems for a little while.) The problem is the overarching 'main' story of the game taking the focus and sense of agency away from the player. They could have had Ava and Maya in if they had been paced and developed better. They could have made the twins work if they had given them much more motivation & development, as well as develop personal animosity towards the player. But you don't really get that in this. There's so many wasted opportunities to have made a better paced experience.

Anyway hopefully the season pass DLCs solve some of these story faults with some more satisfying and compelling poo poo, or even make us care about the main story actors in ways we didn't get from the main game.

I understand it's difficult to integrate player characters into cutscenes when there is 1-4 of them and any combination of 4 people including duplicates and with customisable appearance. I would be content if the 4 VHs show in their default appearance regardless of composition.

Just did graveward for the first time in story and it took forever with my bad guns, but he also did no damage to me. Don't think I ever ran out of shields.

Funnily enough, I found a purple masher and a Maggie last night. The Maggie was significantly lower damage.

Somebody port all the playable characters from BL3 into BL2 with the occasional echo of WainWright calling Handsome Jack "Rat Boy!" and I'll be happy.
