A full $60 game absolutely doesn't need to further be commoditized (especially one that is guaranteed to sell millions). It is just pure greed and should be fought against.

While I do not like loot boxes games have not increased in price for like 30 years. You should be paying over $150 for a game by now. Saying something that that has not increased in price while costs and time to produce said game have increased exponentially should not have other avenues of revenue is shortsighted.

Games actually cost more 20-30 years ago.

Yeah I remember my parents paying 109 or something for Sonic 3 when I was in the childrens hospital getting my tonsils out. 109. For a 5 minute platformer.

Yeah, you used to have to go a physical store, and buy a physical game expansion, and that thing probably cost like 35-40 bucks, and that's not adjusted for inflation.

Also, lol at "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" arguments about loot boxes for games that are just chock full of hyper-real interactive violence.

I got called a libertarian last time I said this in another thread, but if a parent is buying their kids games that are clearly rated 17+ and then also giving them access to their credit card for some inexplicable reason, the onus is at least partially (mostly) on the parent as far as I'm concerned. I'm not defending loot boxes. They suck and they are slimey and I'd love to see them gone as much as the next guy, but the world is full of poo poo like this and I don't get why people are so passionate about loot boxes, like they are any different than other dumb stuff like trading cards or capsule toys or whatever.

I guess I don't get when everyone became a helpless victim. I spent most of my childhood asking to buy excessive amounts of dumb worthless garbage and being told "no" for it. Game systems and phones even have advanced options that make it so you can lock your kids out of spending money.

Like, you aren't entirely wrong or anything, but there is stuff like that everywhere and it extends way past games or even just targeting kids. And while two wrongs don't make a right, the reality is that kids don't have any money, and if you are caving to their every whim and they are developing a gambling addiction, you are probably loving up as a parent.

This is excellently put. My son is getting old enough now that he's asking for robux to spend in Roblox. I had to setup the parental controls on his tablet and lock down his laptop so he couldn't buy poo poo. It's MY responsibility as a parent to ensure that he's playing responsibly. I'm neutral on loot boxes, though. I've spent a few bucks here and there on them. If you don't like them, don't buy them.

Really weird that we can have an argument if it's ok to put weapons you have to pay money for in a multiplayer game. That would have been a total joke 10 years ago.

I don't think for any successful games it's ever been necessary to have lootboxes. The margins are so much better, it used to be estimated about $30 to get an official cartridge made and then you got a crappy margin off a physical retailer. According to an article from a 1995 magazine the margin for publishers was 15-25% on a SNES game, depending if there was a license, marketing and royalties. Now they are getting something like 70% from digital sales on Live/PSN? 90% on PC if you have your own store?

Saying that they're obviously going to have to make some profit to cover unsuccessful or cancelled titles, although a lot of games that we think were flops actually made profit. I had a check and EA and Activision are making 200%+ increase year-over-year on net profit which suggests they don't need lootboxes to function as a business, they need them to buy gold plated toilets. If they do anything with this money it's not going to be making cool new games. It's going to be trying to make the next FIFA Ultimate Team.

Yeah at the end of the day it's pointless to argue about because 90% of the audience doesn't care and if every series "veteran" boycotted the game they'd still make two billion dollars but I don't think we should go around saying poo poo doesn't stink.

When I was young, it cost like $3,000 for a PC, consoles like the first Atari were $200, the equivalent to $1,000 and a lot of people just couldn't afford them and didn't buy them. The fact is, the market for these products have exploded and driven costs down. There wouldn't be a huge market for games if everyone had to pay $200 a game.

There are still lots of companies that make money with just a $60 game, and if they could sell them for more, they would.

The other nice thing about Overwatch is that you get a box every time you level up, and you earn currency to buy things directly instead of relying on RNG.

Infinite Warfare and WW2 has a salvage system for making gear. Apparently so did Moderner Warfare until Activision wanted it changed to BO3/4’s supply drops if the rumors are true.

One could argue that casinos are also designed that way, with the obvious difference being that they are regulated. At least video game loot boxes don't give you a rare item and then claim a "malfunction" when you try to redeem it, like many casinos have done to jackpot winners. I agree with you that hand waving it with "just don't do it" is cavalier, but I don't have any other suggestions that don't involve complex solutions like regulation that I'm not qualified to speak on.
