General Dog posted:I'm not really familiar with his body of work, was he a bad broadcaster or just a good broadcaster who was racist? He was kind of fun decades ago when it was cool to show highlights of brain damage causing hits and his racism was hidden behind Cold War era anti-Soviet rhetoric. Not great, but it was entertaining and everyone was pretty dumb then. But he never moved passed that and in 2019 was still talking about how a dude that got beheaded by a flying elbow should have kept his head up on that clean hit and how you need good old Canadian boys to win. So he went from cool, to old crazy uncle/grandpa you make excuses for, to batshit crazy racist.

a correction to the above: it's still very cool to show highlights of brain damage causing hits. it is just also now miserably tragic. thanks for ruining the fun once again, science

My enduring memory of Don around the rink, from regular games to outdoor games, would be how he wanted to pet every dog there, even if those dogs are security dogs that had vest telling people not to pet them. He loved petting those dogs!

The man deserves a handwritten apology from God Almighty Himself for dragging the Canucks to within fingertips’ reach of the Stanley Cup and then the rest of the team catastrophically making GBS threads themselves dry all over him at the worst possible moment. Sending him to Coach’s Corner is the opposite of that.

Yep, good to see him gone. Cherry wasn't completely evil, like he didn't have the directed spite of a Coulter or even the pettiness and insecurity of a trump, but his underlying assumptions about reality were completely informed by privilege and xenophobia. Add to that being a "larger than life" media personality who lives in a bubble and he would never have reformed or even sought any kind of self reflection. What always bothered me the most, even as a kid, was that he was blowharding all over the place but literally had no record of success in professional hockey, ever. His rise seems to be more like a pro wrestling promo gone horribly wrong than the story of a hockey man rising to the top.

It seems to me that Brian Burke has been being groomed for Cherrys job. He's the same sort of loud grumpy old guy who likes hitting and team toughness, but his strong opinions are confined to hockey as far as I know

Burke's late son was gay. During his time in Toronto he marched in the pride parade and has spoken out against homophobia in other ways. So, at the very least, he's not a complete regressive.

Add to that being a "larger than life" media personality who lives in a bubble and he would never have reformed or even sought any kind of self reflection. The thing is, Don pretty much just lives in a bubble, he only really cares about hockey, church, veterans, dogs, and family. That's the full breadth of interests, and nothing really can pry a very old man from that kind of existence when they've lived it for decades. His mindset was of 1940's and 1950's Kingston, ON, and that's about it. His reforms and self-reflection have come from change happening within his world, like him advocating for more women's hockey from time to time. Outside of that, he never had editors, never had producers, never had anyone besides his kids to steer him towards some kind of better communication. Heck, a running feature on Coach's Corner was him preparing too many things to talk about, and then spending time on air trying to figure out which one to pick.
