Tor actually did a recall but there's still plenty of copies lying around.

I don't think there's any way at all that happens without someone at Tor deliberately loving with the printing process.

Yeah, her attitude to fan fiction is nuts. Still, her books are really good, and it's sad that she doesn't get more recognition. That said, I didn't find her books too grimdark. Not more than those of Joe Abercrombie, for example.

As for Sanderson, I like his books a lot. Of course his WoT books are not as good as Robert Jordan's, but that's just because he finished a work not his own. And he did it rather well, imho. And even if you think books 12-14 were just mediocre, knowing how the series ended should be worth it regardless.

Reading Elantris first is a mistake btw., because it was his first published book, and is easily his worst. Emperor's Soul is so much better, and won a Hugo for a reason.

Nope. Now I personally don't care about fan fiction, but whatever floats your boat. Hobb however went on a crazy rant about how "writing fanfiction is stealing my intellectual property!!! even if you do it for free!"

I haven't read any of her works, nor read her opinions about fanfiction, but after quick googling I found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/robinhobb/comments/36zz8z/hobbs_view_on_fanfiction/

Doesn't really seem as bad as some people made it sound. If I was an author I wouldn't either like people writing stories about how my characters are raped by diaper wearing furry Spocks.

“What is the harm in it?”

I might counter by demanding to know ‘What is the good of it?’ I’ll resist that temptation.

Fan fiction is like any other form of identity theft. It injures the name of the party whose identity is stolen. When it’s financial identity theft, the thief can ruin your credit rating. When it’s creative identity theft, fan fiction can sully your credit with your readers. Anyone who read fan fiction about Harry Potter, for instance, would have an entirely different idea of what those stories are about than if he had simply read J.K. Rowling’s books.
 that "fan fiction is like any other form of identify theft", are you loving kidding me

edit: reading this whole thing, she sounds pretty nutso, asserting that writing fan fiction must mean you think the author really screwed up, comparing writing fan fiction to doing creepy, perverted things with family reunion photos or posting porn under someone else's name, etc.

And some people got successful by adapting their fanfiction into viable franchises. See Fifty Shades, or Outlander for examples.

I'm in a similar boat. I'm not interested in reading it, but it provides some "world building" for recreational writers to simply focus on storytelling. It's kind of like making a mod for a video game. It's a lot of effort to create your own art, audio etc..

Sanderson's kind of bad is mostly that it's not all that interesting to read. He has clever mechanics and plot devices, but the characters are samey and flat and they are usually a slog in the middle.

But they're notably devoid of his personal fetishes and have the least amount of rape in fantasy (though it's still there, at least in the original Mistborn).

I'm going through the series again, and I took a detour to finally read New Spring, which I left out in my original read-through. It was good! It definitely feels like that's where RJ got his groove back after book 10.

Now that I'm done with that, what all is left in the WoT canon (outside the main 14 books)? I know about The Strike at Shayol Ghul and The River of Souls, and I know there's also the Big Book of Bad Art and the WoT Companion, although those aren't really meant to be read as a book from what I can tell. Is there anything else?

Unfettered III came out earlier this year and contains "A Fire Within the Ways", which is a non-canon short novella about Perrin and some others entering the ways to stop the Dark One's forces from using them. It was originally written to be included in A Memory of Light but cut during editing.

Full text here; it's a very short read. I read it tonight after work since I'd never actually read it before.

For people who haven't finished the main series, I don't think it gives anything away once you know who the Hundred Companions are, although someone might correct me on this.

What does that mean? Can someone point me to an image of such a dress?

Rpbert Jordan Interview posted:

Q106: What does it mean when dresses are slashed with a color?

Jordan: There are two possibilities meanings to this. The most usual one is that there is an underskirt of the color that says it is slashed with. The outer skirt has a slit in it, a slash, which is sewn in such a way that it is always open thus revealing its underneath color. The other way of doing this is there is this sort of pocket sown on the inside of that slash of the second color, so you are looking through the outer skirt into a depth, so it looks like it is a little pocket that other color in the skirt. This is not my invention, they did this during the Renaissance, and I believe earlier as well.
