More like because the general public (and by extension the politicians who need their votes) is generally more concerned with the last mass shooting to make headlines than with the boring old handgun crimes (robberies, gang shootouts, crimes of passion, etc.) which claim way more lives each year. So gun control discussion tends to focus disproportionately on anything that looks like too much firepower for filthy commoners like us, regardless of how few lives we could realistically save (versus focusing on handguns) by banning it.
