Orchestra stabs, choir samples, Hoover. The signature music of the 1990 - 1993 rave scene strikes just the right balance of dark, fun, intense, and danceable.

On and off since 2015, I've been scouring the web for the catchiest and most anthemic tracks of the era - and just this past week, I hit the 90 mark (update: now 107)! Special thanks to Ishkur's Guide (2.5 and 3.0), Discogs, /r/oldskoolrave, all the uploaders, and a few goons in the House/Electro/Synth thread! :slick:

UPDATE: Since my main playlist was getting way more views than the others, I finally decided to merge 'em all so some killer tracks weren't missed out on.

Thank you for this thread, looking forward to discover new tracks.

Rave from that era combines this sort of childlike energy with epic synth melodies and memorable hooks.

Also it's not overproduced, many big track must have been recorded for very cheap. Same thing how I like 70s and 80s punk sound and not the more slick modern production.

Neat thread. I was just listening to some old Orbital yesterday. I got into electronic music around 1992, starting with with Meat Beat Manifesto's album Satyricon, which I blindly purchased at a CD store one day after having it recommended by my good friend who was ahead of the curve, musically. I listened primarily to electronic music for the next ten years. I didn't get exposed to much true techno or house back then, and mostly I was into a more subdued form of electronica. The most energetic stuff I listened to came from those old "140 BPM Speed Limit" compilations popular in the early 90's, and what was played on my local college radio station (Georgia State's WRAS 88.5 in Atlanta, and Georgia Tech's WREK 91.1).

My early 90s favorites were The Orb (saw them live in Atlanta), Future Sound of London, Orbital, Meat Beat Manifesto, The Shamen, Pop Will Eat Itself.

I was never into the rave scene, despite having most of my friends getting way into it by 1996 or so. I felt like I lacked the style to pull it off, and I'm a terrible dancer. I did like drugs though so I was more than happy to sit around the house and listen to stuff on the home stereo.

Beyond the real early days, I got into stuff like Rabbit in the Moon, a lot of the funky breakbeat stuff that was happening in Florida (DJ Icey, Baby Anne), and of course jungle music once it came into the scene. Almost everything was jungle after about 1995.

Some old favorites:

The Orb - Live 93, my absolute favorite Orb album, and one of my overall favorite electronic albums ever. A few years ago I was really happy to see that this style of music had evolved into what is now called Psybient, and I love a lot of artists in that genre now.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge-dNTCX9wo

Future Sound of London - Far Out Son of Lung and the Ramblings of a Mad Man. This was my entry point into FSOL and I have no idea how I got into this band. After this of course came the amazing album Lifeforms.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE4M_Vjvsfc

Meat Beat Manifesto - Circles - my entry point into the genre, as said above. This is a great track off Satyricon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGh6U7z3KIc

Pop Will Eat Itself - Familus Horriblus - their album The Looks or the Lifestyle was another really early entry point into electronic music for me. I just about wore out that album, and Dos Dedos Mis Amigos.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjIBTrGT3WY

And lastly, one of the craziest things to me is that I discovered this track just recently and I have no idea how I never knew about this album back in the day. It's funny how isolated music discovery was in the days before the internet made everything so easy.

Come on, lemme see ya shake your tail feather

I grew up in Germany in the 90's and that's literally all we had until hip hop made its way over. This stuff was on MTV and Viva 24/7. I'm ignorant though so techno, rave, house all blends together for me.

I had an album by 4hero that was more of drum n bass with some hippy earth goddess flavor in it.

Can we suggest things in this thread? Tryna work out where you're at with this cos those lists are a mix of stuff we played to death and wouldn't have touched at the time but hey, I'll edit out anything that's not what you're after.

DJ Edge - Compnded https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEE_0b0Mh6c
Dance Conspiracy - Dub War https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXxkVTEOGA8
Egyptian Empire - Horn Track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm9bdVeZiCQ
Sly T and Ollie J - Help Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gof3K-odfE
DJ Seduction - Sub Dub https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLFympu56uY

These were the years I was really into it, I kind of ducked out when it split into cheesy or dark as gently caress and then I got into Warp stuff.

Of course feel free to post as many tracks as you want to!

Those are all pretty solid tracks that can fill out a set, but they aren't very catchy. I like stuff that has the distinctive sounds of the era, like Hoover, orchestra stabs, choir samples, the Landlord stab, etc. With a few exceptions, I dislike tracks that are breakbeat focused, and lightweight "piano rave" tracks.

Which tracks wouldn't you have touched? I do know a few of my picks are more dancey - "Do The Rave Stomp", "Así Me Gusta a Mí", and "Faces" - but I included them because the hooks are good. There's a reason my secondary playlist is called "Near-Rave". ;)

Dear diary, today I

not really rave, but maybe somebody in this thread can have their nostalgic itch scratched by this:
the documentary 'the sound of belgium' is now free on vimeo:
https://vimeo.com/157495926https://vimeo.com/157495926
I know some of the people who worked on this. They had a lot of financial problems back in the day clearing all the rights of the archive footage, and it was only made possible through crowdfunding, which was a novel thing in 2012.

1997 is a bit too new for this thread. The production on that track actually sounds even newer than that.

It also tends more towards acid than rave. Here's a better thread for that.
