He wasn’t kicked out by Microsoft and did not leave a fiasco of a game development project that took 3 years on top to finish the chaos into a game with a release state.
He was just misunderstood, and now, free from publisher boundaries and leadership and milestones, we all can witness his expertise. CIG needed 8 years for their PTU on a 2014/2015 tech level. That’s pure skill.

Since most high throughput cooling systems are ACTIVE IRL this means you would cooling would take forever. This setup is so dumb. I know this is CI but drat any sim would have an override or some control system where your weapons or whatever wouldn't fire etc.

I don't understand the "super advanced tech" that the uber quantum-engineers at CIg are not at all implementing that's "never been done before". So many actual, released games of the genre have already done it... you just need to take your dysfunctional head out of the sand to acknowledge it. The shitload of systems/planets/moons/worlds, the ships, ship customization, dynamic economies, whatever. Not the first time I plug it here but try Evochron Mercenary or Evochron Legacy from like a decade or so ago to see how good this was all implemented well before Chris thought he could make games again. An amazing oldie in which you can (gasp!) fly straight from deep space to a planet's atmosphere with no loading screen or transition, it's all in the same world and it's not freaking black magic.

Same for the "never before seen" graphical fidelity that's put to shame by so many actual games released more than half a decade ago. I'm not a big gamer myself but every now and then I'll fire up GTA V on PC and it still blows my mind how good it looks with everything maxed out. Skyrim with the right mods puts SC to shame. So many first person shooters that I'll never play but see images pass by here and there have surpassed their poo poo a long time ago. Hell, I installed Crysis last year just to see how it actually looks when your computer can run it at ultra (couldn't even dream of doing that the last time I played it) and it still beat the screens I see coming out of SC, and that's CryEngine 1 (unless I'm mistaken?).

This thread is shock full of teasers and screens from current or past games that make SC look several generations old, maybe a PS3 game if that.

Beating a dead horse here but why in the world would you give a loving dime to this shitshow of a scam?

I remember some debates i was in with backers where they were claiming no game had ever done before the ability to get inside a ship and walk around doing stuff while the ship is moving and everything work due to the magic of localized physic grids. Replace ships with dinosaurs and you can do that in Ark. In Ark you can be on the back of a dinosaur (even a flying one... at least the largest one) and build a base on its back, while its flying, then do cooking, crafitng, whatever, while someone else is controlling the flight.

But noooo, for the backers, nothing like it has been done before.

They seem to live in a bubble where only CIG exists... well, other games do exist, but only when CR acknowledges it to compare SC to them and say SC is better.

Because your forgetting that "Star citizen is the only game doing it all at once with high end graphics" defense, even though they haven't implemented it in any way besides a video talking about it.

The backers really don't know about games, all they do know is Chris mentioned them in a video either making GBS threads on it or the developers and claim whatever victory that CIG will beat their games released half a decade ago, even though they have failed at every release, doubled the time they promised people the game would release, and at this point, starting to look more dated than DNF

Citizens tend to claim that dumb, annoying and time consuming mechanics are in fact 'immersive' even though there are real-life examples where people said 'gently caress it, there must be other way' and invented means to avoid these 'immersive', but lovely situations. But SC must be more immersive than real life, so...

Given how ray tracing usually works, won't this make SC unplayably dark? I doubt they set up their interiors with actual light sources, not any sensible ones at least. I mean they claim they have but we all know it's smoke and mirrors.

UnknownTarget
Sep 5, 2019

No it should be fine. Games use several tricks to approximate day traced lighting, which Cryengine is doubtlessly using. One of the major ones is baked lighting and another one is a reflection probe. Baked lighting literally "bakes" Ray traced lighting into light maps (textures) which are then used to make areas darker or lighter. It costs nothing to render and as long as none of the lights move it looks just as good as Ray traced lighting. Reflection probes basically capture the scene from a general area in a 360 map and apply it to the object as color, creating "reflections" and tinting dynamic objects so they match the scene.

After that I think it's down to just having really efficient real time lighting calculations for dynamic lights.

The reason why laymen don't see the benefit to ray tracing in real time applications is because the industry had gotten so good at taking it that doing it for real isn't that noticeably different. However all the stuff I described requires work and render time, to bake out the lighting. With real time ray tracing it's a lot easier: just plop down the lights and they'll "just work".

So short answer: Star Citizen will probably look the same, real time ray tracing or not.

I doubt that CIG has the know-how to properly integrate Raytracing into CryEngine 3. But okay, let's assume they give this task to a junior dev that reads up on this stuff and has some more-or-less workable solution ready to go in a year or so:

In true CIG fashion there will probably be one raytracing-enhanced puddle somewhere, where, when you look at it, get single-digit fps with an 2080ti. Citizens will of course be ecstatic, "Wow, look at this puddle! This has never been done before! Here, take my money!" since that`s the cycle of things.

very good thread. you know none of this will be addressed.

Most frustrating gameplay is for me to always take the freaking trains in Lorville and Arccorp. Its just such a waste of time. I wish we could directly land at a skyscraper in area18 or in the big building in lorville.

quote:

:trustme: This could cause a "runaway quality-of-life" effect. Where players make arguments for QOL to make stuff happen faster until anything between accepting a mission and the mission complete is considered a "chore" that has to be skipped. For example, many animations got accelerated because players wanted more QOL. But the problem was in my view, not animation speed, but lack of camera control during the animation.

quote:

Totally agree on that one, its really a waste of time, since nothing interesting happens during that time. When you qt you can always get interrupted and thats what makes it interesting. But in the trains you just stand/sit there

quote:

:trustme: Sorry to say that i disagree entirely on this one. I want a sim, which doesn't mean teleporting from point A to point B, or having everything right next to everything else. Fast travel is not something I want in Star Citizen.

Wing Commander historians have a great picture of exactly how the Wing Commander games were made… but very little is known about the details of the animated series, which was produced by Universal through animation studios in Japan and Korea. These will teach us how the show was made (and how shows in general were made back then; the advent of digital animation has rendered huge warehouses of animation cels a thing of the distant past! Wing Commander Academy was one of the last shows of its kind, in that respect.)

More exciting, I think, is what we’ll learn about the Wing Commander universe. Character names, ship names, material cut from episodes or too small to see in detail at 480 lines of resolution. In the storyboard set available above, we learned the names of two transport ships, half a dozen background characters, the proper spelling of a Kilrathi warship AND the classifications of previously unidentified fighters!
