"real" Pyrex hasn't been borosilicate for 20+ years so unless that bowl is older than the person waving a torch around it there's definitely a danger of glass explosion. Or is Pyrex a genericized term now?

Clip lacks some context, the lady torching the bowl is one of the main food people at Bon Appetit she has a couple cooking show things. While I don't know how safe this is, I am sure the kitchen there is stocked with the right type of glassware.

Pyrex is kind of a generic term though for this stuff.

Airline forgot to pay for the lugnut package on their 737 max

Actually, it's pilot error.

During the preflight checklist, the crew failed to set the Fixed Automatic Lugnut Tightening System (FALTS) option to "SEC" in the onboard computer. Instead, they started their takeoff roll with the wheels at "SET".

SEC setting stands for SECURE, and means that FALTS keeps the lugnuts fully tightened to design specifications.

SET setting means that the wheels are set to be removed and in this mode, the FALTS allows the lugnuts to spin freely, enough so that tools are not required to remove them and it can be done by hand.

A review of the CVR shows that the first officer called out setting FALTS but, critically, did not specify what option was to be chosen to which the captain replied "Set". The first officer believed that this meant that the pilot had confirmed that FALTS was configured according to the checklist, i.e. in SEC configuration, while the captainhad only called out the current setting.

At this crucial moment, before they could notice the incorrect setting, the crew was interrupted by a Senior Vice President from Air Canada, who entered the cockpit unannounced to tell the crew that Air Canada was closing Air Canada subsidiary Jazz Aviation, for whom both the pilot and copilot had been employed for more than 20 years. After landing at their destination, "you fatcat union gangsters better pack your loving bags and be off [my aircraft] within 5 minutes of the last passenger getting off this shitheap of a plane"

After the executive left the cockpit, the pilots resumed their preflight checklist, but, crucially, did not revisit the FALTS setting. After completing the checklist, the pilots requested ATC to taxi to position for takeoff.

During taxiing and while waiting on the runway for takeoff clearance, the wheel was held in place by the weight of the plane pressing down on the various parts of the wheel assembly. Once the plane became airborne, said pressure disappated and the plane experienced an Unplanned Exit of the Wheel from the Aircraft Event (UEWAE).

It is at this point that the CVR picked up audible concern from the passenger cabin and the pilots, noticing that FALTS now read OFF, indicating the lack of at least one wheel, started the UEWAE checklist.

The crew declared an emergency and, after circling over the ocean to burn off fuel, was able to successfully land the aircraft back at the departing airport. The only reported injury was to Air Canada's quarterly earnings, for which both the captain and the copilot were subsequently fired.

The NTSB, in it's final report, sighted the confusing interface of the flight management computer, the lack of audible warning indicating that the pilots were taking off with unsecured wheels, and a lack of training from the Jazz Airlines. Air Canada promised to send a memo to all company employees telling them to not let the wheels fall off their planes.

Did they glow eerie blue while buzzing or wailing until a sudden popbang? That's a normal fault and what they are more or less made to do when wrapped in live cables or there's a transient event cause something's going on just down the line.

Did they explode in a sooty orange fireball that gave instant cancer to anything downwind? That's an explosion and usually happens on direct lightning strike.

Both! The overwhelming majority were that lovely blue, and from a distance the popbangs looked like very distant camera flashes. The big orange fireballs were much fewer, and around here were probably tree falls or flying debris impacts. Most of Seattle's electrical infrastructure was well exposed due to the normally very mild weather, and since then a lot of those lines have been buried, substations enclosed, etc in an overall effort to harden against similar storms, which have been becoming more frequent. It's actually worked very well, the neighborhood I'm in now was without power for nearly three weeks after that storm, and outages are now brief and few even in severe weather.

But that tiktok video is 100% fake. Just look at how the ball throws purple sparks randomly to grounded objects and especially how it doesn't illuminate the trees at all when it gets near them at the end. Captain Disillusion would probably know exactly which effects from which libraries they used.

That's a real good pilot. He/she put the wheel on the ground and then kept the plane hovering in ground effect, with the majority of its weight still supported by the wings, for a full ten seconds. You can see the transfer as the torque link folds up. Textbook technique for landing on a soft field or when you have an uncertain landing gear condition :canada:

Massey Ferguson, pffft. Growing up on a farm, the only time I saw a Massey was at a tractor/implement show (usually an antique), or in pieces in a shed.

The machine gun on top of the vehicle ejecting its barrel is a pretty regular occurrence. The new version has a much quicker change out procedure but the older (pre-2010) one will quite happily launch its barrel downrange if you gently caress up the headspacing.
