I love it when boomers point to how awesome their parents were because they were hardened by combat and why wouldn’t kids today want the same honor?

Most of them decided not to and dodge/protest the draft, but that sure hasn't stopped them from insisting their neighbors' kids get to go!

Boomers have heard Fortunate Son by CCR at least once a day for the last 40 years but have no idea what the lyrics actually mean I guess. It's also played in every single loving war movie as a chopper lands in a clearing.

Dodging the draft and then talking about how military service would toughen folks up we should bring back the draft.

Don't forget how these poo poo always get a (Viagra-induced) hardon for "mandatory civil service" because "it's a good idea". It's always targeted towards people in or just out of high school and it's always the following:

1. Military service
2. Wiping boomer asses in nursing homes
3. Sometimes something vaguely environmental, they don't ever have that detail sorted out.

It's never the old folks demanding and voting for this poo poo that have to put their lives on hold and spend a few years in indentured servitude. It's never for a cause that might actually help someone under the age of 65.

It's always "aww shucks" good ol' boys who propose this feel good bullshit under the guise of "learning how to be a good citizen" and "giving back". And I say this as someone who spent the better part of a year in the Washington Conservation Corps. John McCain was a proponent of this poo poo, but so were/are lots of others.

* Massively funding New Deal jobs programs is fine but heaven forbid you hear anything about that, that's for freeloaders who can't get a job.

No, that’s socialism and defeats the point of mandatory civil service in their view: providing millennial cannon fodder for a shiny new war for them to watch on cable news. The ones that come back will be toughened-up manly men and vote straight ticket Republican as a bonus. At the very least they’ll get yelled at by drill instructors and probably cry and that’s hilarious.

Or you could just offer to pay people good wages for these things instead of violating the 13th amendment.

Butler v Perry suggests that such service would not violate the 13th. It certainly doesn't for the wartime draft, so I don't see why a civil service draft would be. Whether or not that case was decided correctly is up for debate, but it's pretty clear jurisprudence.

The numbers injured were in the same ballpark as the US. There were very few deaths.

Sorry i made it seem like I was making GBS threads on cleaning with viniger, it's just I work in a grocery store and I've had a lot of boomers freak out the cleaners we use, and demand we use viniger to clean the belts and stuff, so no "chemicals" are getting near their food. Oh it doesn't matter that is food safe cleaner that is approved to use in food prep areas by the health department, it has some scary sounding chemicals in it and they saw on a meme with a minion on it that chemicals are bad.
