Like, Simon's a cool addition, but there isn't any metric where he's a choice for Smash Brothers versus anyone else on the roster (Barring, like, the Duck Hunt Dog or maybe the Pits/Palutena) once you try playing the 'character deserves to be in Smash because' game, and the Smash roster is honestly better for it.

Yeah, but Konami.

We are literally never going to see Snake or any of the Belmonts outside of this game ever again, unless like, all of Konami's upper management is busted for trafficking heroin and human organs.

I would assume Konami is happy for any positive news considering their current situation. Compared to, say, SquareEnix, which apparently is a hassle to work with.

my whole thought process is we already have like a billion characters and they can do whatever the gently caress they wanna do with the rest of this game, and I would like if people stopped acting really weirdly about what we do or do not get from this point out

As long as Konami is able to make any money off the stuff they own, they'll be fine even though they drove away their talented game devs that could have made new games for them.

As for Square-Enix, their difficulty is partially why I think Geno isn't worth it. Ultimately its another Mario character that isn't owned by Nintendo. Even more damning are the facts that he's already a Spirit in the game (which could deconfirm him as a DLC fighter) and that they could easily release the Geno Mii Costume from Smash 4.

I’m grateful they’re even in the game but Square music not being able to get the remix treatment other franchises have gotten is such a shame.

They always did this, this isn't a modern policy change.

[Director Hitoshi Akamatsu]’s sequels to Castlevania [on the Famicom] sold poorly, so he was demoted to working in one of Konami’s game centers, and then he quit. According to Akamatsu, Konami placed profits above all else, and developers who weren’t creating games that made lots of money were all eventually axed one-by-one. A number of them went on to do great work at Square Enix.

Smash Bros was originally going to be a different game. Captain Falcon's moveset was developed as the boss character's moveset, if I remember correctly. Then, when it became Smash Bros, they used the existing assets and mapped that moveset onto Falcon.

Nah. They're undeniably good at making poo poo up from scratch, but the important thing is that they're making movesets that make sense for the character they're based on, even if they have no original material to draw from. This makes Fox a good example, because the moveset was created with Star Fox in mind. By contrast, because Falcon's moveset was just pre-existing assets, that makes him a bad example.

Well, we were just talking about that they'd make up poo poo from scratch at all. Quality is completely unimportant.

You aren't wrong though that Fox's poo poo is way better than Falcon's poo poo.

Even if Falcon's poo poo later became canon in F-Zero.

I seem to recall several stupid as hell think pieces saying that from like 2010-2015ish, around the time a lot of western journalists were on their "JAPANESE VIDEO GAMES HAVE ALL BEEN TERRIBLE THIS GEN, WHEN WILL THEY EVER GET GOOD AGAIN" phase.

I remember thinking it was particularly stupid because this was the same period of time that Dark Souls and such was also at the height of its popularity.

Playing devil's advocate just for a moment, Japanese developers did go through a rough spot at the start of that generation where they seemed like they just weren't ready for the jump to HD development. All those articles and think pieces were still stupid though.

Having Inafune there egging them on really didn't help matters.

Raxivace

I can agree with that to some extent, but those issues aren't because of a lack of taking inspiration from western game design.

Like when I think of some of the more divisive games from that era, its stuff like Final Fantasy 13 or Resident Evil 6 that specifically did take cues from what was popular in the west or an attempt to appeal to westerners.

Ghost Leviathan

Exploration is ill-advised.
If anything it's Western game development that was utterly dire throughout that era, with the jump to HD development mostly resulting in AAA stagnation and the only innovation being investing in new ways to make people keep spending money on a game they already own, and lots of dull brown and bloom (sometimes magenta) games about scowling hairy dads shooting people.

Game journalists are generally wrong about everything.

Nintendo def had the right idea seeing the entire game journalism industry eagerly prognosticating their doom at every opportunity and deciding to cut them out of the equation entirely because it turns out they can literally just post videos on youtube without needing an american failson to talk over them

Smash Bros is basically becoming a wildlife preserve for well known video game characters whose original devs don't give the slightest poo poo about them anymore, between, the Belmonts, Banjo and Kazooie, Mega Man, Pac-Man, and basically Sonic given his franchise would be better off dead

I think the Japanese devs who transitioned better to HD during that period were the ones who just kept making games that were deliciously japanese.

Or Nintendo, but they cheated by entering into HD much later on.
