This thread inspired me to watch Casino, and now I'm playing poker stars VR. It's pretty pathetic, no cocktail waitresses, futuristic backgrounds. Where's the 70s Vegas level!?

I assume that's just hollywood stuff, but I mean do you literally just walk into a pool hall and be like OK WHO WANTS TO PLAY FOR MONEY how much did you have to practice to get good, are you like thousands of hours in or what like I guess your skill level is somewhere in the gap between like "better than anyone else you will meet in actual real life" and "professional"? He said he’s somehow able to go around to bars and shoot for drinks with somebody, but then it turns out the opponent has a huge bankroll and escalates bets? I’ve hung with a couple pool players and that has been what I’ve seen too but it usually tops out around $100. I’m sure there’s some high rollers willing to gamble big in my area and I just don’t know where they’re at.

I follow a couple poker clubs in my area that is more or less a universal theme at those home games. Bonus points for a partially finished basement and at least one person eating spanish rice at the table. In all seriousness, you might want to consider, like, .05/.10 blinds. That's what Poker Stars uses for their $5 buy-in games and I always find that to be the right amount to play a good while. Pots can get bigger than you expect, even at that level.

Gambling is losing. The exception is around 1% for lifetime. I will stand by that figure, it is no exaggeration. Anyone who disputes it is ignorant of the real extent of gambling itself and of human nature. I have no more stories to tell at this time. I'm working on a massive effort thread, "SMILIE WARS," to distract me from my dumpster fire life, and nothing I write will be as good as the Hummingbird section of my Cocktale Waitress thread anyway. Sincere thanks for the avatar mystery goon.

"In "Dostoyevsky and Parricide", Freud suggested that compulsive gamblers, such as the Russian author himself, have an unconscious desire to lose, and they gamble to relieve the feeling of guilt. ... For the gambler, gambling is also a method of self-punishment." Bullshit or wisdom?

Pretty much everyone broke even in the end with a couple losers-one of which was my teenage son who is still pouting in his room after going all in with his 2,7 unsuited. It was a lot of fun. We definitely need to make the next game a night game with plenty of alcohol.
