Probably, because every single thing that happens in the movie save for maybe the jumping off the cliffs and the hammer was foreshadowed at some point and then plays out exactly as it's foreshadowed. What you have in your spoiler there isn't really a part of the community's lore so I wasn't expecting that out of nowhere.

Maybe? I dunno, I never got that sense myself. I just got Wicker Man vibes so I assumed there would be some sort of horrific ritual sacrifice and I was correct.

The movie was good but some sort of huge demi-god monster ala The Ritual would've been much appreciated.

Dunno if it's been posted, but there is currently a documentary of the making of Rob Zombie's Halloween available for free on YouTube. It's 4 hrs and 20 minutes long. :420:

The boat is a metaphor for the acceptance of their feelings. Then the movie ended.

I like that interpretation. Maybe there's an alternative universe where they smooch and it turns into San Junipero.

Yeah, I think it was this combo that made me expect something supernatural to happen.

I just finished Hereditary, and that was the first time I can recall making this face :whitewater: during a movie.

Even that scene has him telling them what's going to happen beforehand and one of them going "It's not the actual probably fictional ancient Norse ritual of olds throwing themselves from cliffs? is it" and the Perfidious Swede says"It's pretty real". Also a couple of scenes earlier he jokes about it.

Eraserhead is incredibly playful and has a strong sense of humor throughout, it just tends to get ignored in favor of the bleakness or people trying to interpret what's going on.

If you can't find the dark humor in a guy sitting down to have dinner with his weird would-be in-laws and the food starts menstruating while they just blankly smile him, then you can't come to my birthday party.

There are a lot of images in the first few scenes that foreshadow moments later on. One of which is a Mu Pan illustrations of a giant Liopleurodon killing a bunch of villagers in battle. The first time I saw that, I also expected a strange twist of there being a giant monster at the heart of these rituals, but alas, it's just a strange red herring.

This interpretation fits in surprsingly well with the scenes of masterbation to the mermaid statue. Patterson's ideal woman is one who does not exist from the waist down, for he is in reality not attracted to women at all. The fantasies about mermaids thus allow him to maintain his illusions of heterosexuality. However, in time this illusion is shattered (symbolized by the breaking of the statue) and he is forced to confront the reality of a mermaid vagina and the lack of arousal it brings him.

I'm gonna throw in with the other posters who enjoyed Underwater. Awesome looking creature feature with Lovecraftian sea beasties.

It did rip off Alien significantly, including the air duct scene but minus the big reveal of evil corporation trying to research or recover the monsters or the heroine trying to reverse a self destruct sequence. Lovely looking film that looks like it was shot with a decent budget.

Honestly the more time that goes by the more I think The Ritual is really really loving good and one of the absolute best of the decade in a decade that had some tough competition in the genre. I don't remember many people mentioning it in their best of the decade lists.

It's really good but only because it "gets" how to do a monster reveal. The third act is kinda garbo with the cultists/villagers.

It'd make mine for sure. I struggle to think of anything that touches that creature design. It also makes really good use of what is a tough piece of source material to adapt.

Agreed on the source material. I read the book after the film and it seemed very simple (if creepy), but then took a weird almost torture porn turn. As much as the cultist stuff dragged, I can't see following the book working well.

Fantastic monster though. Really pagan and primeval feeling

EDIT: On the subject of monster design and going in the complete opposite direction, did anyone ever see a film called Hypothermia in 2010 (Michael Rooker was in it). I remember it being pretty decent for what it was. Nothing ground breaking, but a competent little movie out of nowhere. Then you got the reveal of the monster and...

Dear god. I cannot overstate how bad the monster was. I honestly thought it was a placeholder for test footage. Like... someone filmed that and said "yep, that's our monster". It was like some kid told his mum he needed a monster outfit for a school play the night before the show and she threw something together.

That was my opinion. It was really bland besides the monster and the beautiful shots of the setting.

Also loving all the recent appreciation for The Greasy Strangler. It's not for everyone and tbh I think it's more humor than horror (and most of the horror is more disgust than horror) but there's some interesting things going on there for real.

I have profound respect for how intentional every shot, line and casting decision is. It drips with spite, not only for mainstream film making, but also for the viewer. It has no interest in easing you in, it has no concern for whether or not you "get" it. Nothing in The Greasy Strangler is an accident. Everything in it is designed to either repulse you or challenge a preconception on who, or what, deserves to be portrayed in film.

I love it so much.

So I think The Greasy Strangler would make a great double feature with The Lighthouse. Hear me out.

Both movies could arguably be viewed as two people who live together that are actually two aspects of the same person. The old Wake and the young Winslow are good analogues for Big Ronnie and Brayden, who are simply two polar dynamics of the same stereotypically male archetype. Ronnie, with his, we'll say, physical manifestation of machismo and hypermasculinity, is old and grizzled and don't believe anything anyone says. He calls everyone a bullshit artist just the way Thomas Wake would. And similar to Wake, Ronnie fights back in an overcompensating way against anything tender or affectionate. Brayden, on the other hand, with his own physical manifestation of male insecurity, is young, innocent, and gullible. He just wants to find tenderness with someone, but is constantly pushing it away because of how it might be perceived. At the end of The Greasy Strangler, we see them become one. Ronnie accepts loving his more innocent side (his son), and Brayden accepts loving his more aggressive side (his father, and becoming another Strangler)

For me the absolute perfection of how The Ritual builds the expectation of a creature, and then pays that off, is worth a hundred Hereditarys or Lighthouses. I won't say it's on the level of the T-Rex paddock in Jurassic Park but it's that same type of thing. Maybe not revolutionary but also not easy, moments like that are pretty drat rare in the genre and I can't think of a better one that came along this decade.

I think people are a little too flippant to the set design for The Ritual. Making a character's internal hallucinations physically manifest into a blend of urban environments and uncharted woods is asking for things to slip into camp, and yet it absolutely pulls off the authenticity of the moment each time. That this is caused by a creature in the woods, which then weaponizes the effect, is really impressive, and never gets questioned in these discussions.

Also, the violence is really scary. I love getting scared by a movie that's building up to a reveal of What Happened To That Character? And The Ritual's whole bodies mutilated and spread open in trees was really one of the scariest moments in film in 2018.

What's the Mount Rushmore of "Tourists Over Their Heads Vs Nature"?

The Descent, The Ritual, The Ruins and...???

The Shallows?

I'd say The Edge, but it's not really fair to call that one a horror movie as much as the other three.

Anyone here seen the documentary, The Summit? Ever since I saw that I thought it'd make a great movie in the "mother nature as a slasher villain" subgenre. Some of the situations described in the documentary are extremely harrowing but I think a big budget movie along the lines of Everest would be even more effective.

Vertical Limit came out a few years before the real life disaster on K-2 depicted in The Summit, and nothing in Vertical Limit comes close to the insanity of what happened for real in 2008.
