Again, I don't understand how making fun of some clown online is equivalent to gathering "a massive consolidation of information" on them, but this convo is just going in circles so I'll just drop it.

I want to be sure, are we talking about the cool, good series with the tournament, or the weird series that is more serious and kinda generic?

fun fact, the tournament series was the second series, the one that's serious and kinda generic was the first series. but, when it came time to introduce zoids to the west, they decided to go with the second series first. probably for the best.

Had a look, and Zoids as a line of scale models that predates the cartoons by almost 20 years. I do recall it had a fair bit of lore prior to becoming any type of cartoon.

Kotobukiya's 1/72-scale Zoid kits are fantastic (albeit expensive) models and a lot of fun to build. The series actually hold up pretty well, and put cel-shaded early-2000's CGI to good use. The Zoids move like they're bigass machines with actual weight instead of gliding about on frictionless surfaces like some shows of the period...

yes let's talk about zoids

let's talk about how zoids had some of the best CGI animation in a television show TO THIS DAY yet was produced in 2001!

look at this gif. look at the weight exhibited, where the thrown zoid lands and catches itself, then repositions and moves its gun emplacement forward to fire, all within the span of like a second and a half. giving these giant robots a real sense of heft to them, and no weird clipping or anything like what often happens with cgi shows.

almost all the guns except the lowest caliber ones had significant recoil, reflected in the bracing and impact of the machines they're mounted on(these are the same scene, couldn't find one contiguous gif)

despite being a giant robot liger, they still managed to capture the feeling of a super-pissed-off-but-wary cat in the animations:

that show blew my goddamn mind when it came out, when like, only half a decade earlier, we had stuff like reboot and beast wars. beast wars at least looked a bit better by the time it ended, but still, that excellent cel shading in zoids was crazy good for a tv show at the time

the concept of a massive post-apocalyptic wasteland where much of the world is decimated landscapes repurposed as massive battle arenas for people piloting building-sized animal robots in a global bloodsport is cool as hell and all the robots are rad. it's like a less-dire mechwarrior, with all the worries about weaponry weight, turning radius, repair and equipment budgeting, and overheating

remember the Liger Panzer which was just so Covered With Guns that it could barely walk and almost any movement at all caused it to overheat, its maximum run speed was barely a trot, look at this dumpy fucker lol

deploying it required it bracing for impact and sliding to a stop instead of running along the ground to slow down

and shooting its main cannons sent it flying backwards

it even had a Macross Missile Massacre built in

but man it looked drat cool

man, Zoids New Century was so cool

You would think that surely it's a tactical platform that makes strategic missile strikes in small batches while using the cannons for support like a Tank. But no, Liger Zero Panzer only has two attacks; "ALL THE MISSILES" and "gently caress you, both cannons".

I still don't like it when youtubers have introductions, as if they were cartoons or something. It ranges from someone like Snesdrunk which manages to have like five to ten seconds of the word "Snes drunk" that still manages to annoy me, to other random youtubers I come across when trying to find gameplay footage of something specific to share with friends who spend like an entire minute inserting anime clips over metal songs with their name flashing in comic sans. speaking of zootopia and also CGI in anime, there's a manga series I just caught up on that was first recommended to me as "edgy zootopia", which, while not ENTIRELY wrong, I think tackles topics way more interestingly and nuanced than zootopia does in general(it's also way funnier and has better character writing). There's also a single season of an anime for it, there's going to be more since it was apparently successful, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any big names talking about it much, I feel like netflix messed up its release and it didn't get as much word of mouth it deserved since it's real good. I follow a few anitubers and one mentioned it as a great show in one video, while another only mentioned it in passing as "being in netflix jail".

It's called Beastars(Netflix page). It's a similar setting to zootopia with herbivores and carnivores living together in a modern society, with the initial primary focus being on a grey wolf who falls in love with a dwarf rabbit in a school that just had a carnivore murder an herbivore and eat them, and the complications that arise from that.

the opening is great, it's done in stop motion to boot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgo9dJB_icw&hd=1

the very first scene is a fantastic re-envisioning of the intro of the manga.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEeHJoYycMM&hd=1

but I guess I'm curious if anyone's really pushing it hard, I've found a couple videos praising it but that's about it. I have a feeling something similar might happen to Dorohedoro since netflix is loving that one up too, lots of people are pirating it because netflix is holding on to the broadcast until it's been completely released instead of putting out episodes weekly.
