I saw Fantasy Island! It is Not Good. The beginning scenes of the torture room make no sense when the twist is revealed at the end, and the whole story really just falls apart. Michael Peña glowering all the time got old really fast, when he’s much better being cheeky smiley chap (à la Antman/The Martian). Also the Tattoo reveal made me cringe so hard.

So, UK goons will (hopefully) know of the BBC drama Ghostwatch, which severely scared the hell out of me watching live as a kid, and is a legit classic. But have people in this thread from other parts of the world seen it? And if so, what’s your take?

I just watched it in the last year and was immediately turned off by the early killer reveal. The mystery of the killer is always one of my favorite parts of slashers as it keeps you engaged between kills and you can count on a big payoff in the final moments. But once I realized that the killer and his overtly phallic weapon were a statement on the genre I got over that and relished in it. Not sure how I missed it looking back, the cover literally has a giant auger drill hanging down between his legs and terrified teens looking up at it from the floor.

Yeah, Ghost Watch is a classic and a thread favorite. The first page of this thread is the Horror Thread Staff Picks and it's been on the list in every variation. Such a fun experience.

Part II is fantastic, it's literally one of my go-to movies. Part III is sort of directionless and soft-core porny (not in a fun way) - I especially take umbrage with the totally nonsensical sexual relationship that Pollard has with one of the campers (of course, the original had the weird relationship between Meg and the camp director, which didn't make sense either). I dunno, watch em!

Kitchens that do large scale cooking for like a whole summer camp typically have comically large pots because there's no way to crank everything out otherwise.

I first heard of it either here or on some other forums where we were discussing shows/movies that took the 'could be real' angle, and tracked down an upload on Youtube. It's definitely one of the top entries in the subgenre. Granted, it didn't scare me but had I seen it when it first aired, I would've been glued to the TV. Looking at it as a piece of TV Horror history, I'm really interested in the afterreactions since what I've read sounds like the Orson Wells War of the Worlds broadcast hysteria. I've yet to find a copy of the Behind the Curtains documentary that I'm curious about.

And if anyone didn't know, the writer wrote a sequel to Ghostwatch and has it up on his website for download.

Watching a Friday the 13th movie after seeing Freddy vs Jason is kinda nuts, too, because all of the characterization of Jason comes from, like, Part 7 through X. Aesthetically, it's nothing like a Friday the 13th movie, which tend to feature the outdoors and woods and cabins, so you get these warm muddy earthtones instead of FvJ's cold palette of blue and green, with some of the dream sequences heavily filtered through red.

Freddy is Freddy, so that aspect of that film is consistent with it's respective series.

Basebf555 posted:

Yea Ronny Yu famously had never seen a Freddy or Jason movie when he was hired, and what he ended up doing was basically an early 2000s music video featuring the two characters. Which actually turned out pretty well, I can't really argue with the results.

Have to hard disagree with the early 2000s music video evaluation of Freddy vs. Jason. IMO What you both need to do since I think you both have Prime is stop what you're doing and watch Ronny Yu's early 90s romantic tragedy, The Bride with White Hair. It's a fairy tale wuxia kind of movie, and yet it's also where Freddy vs. Jason's aesthetic (AND EVEN SOME OF FREDDY VS. JASON'S ACTION SCENES!) come from. Plus it stars Leslie Cheung and Brigitte Linn so like why is anyone even still reading this. Fuckin' gorgeous flick and it's even thread appropriate since it has a brief but great body horror moment as we learn more about one of the film's antagonists. There's a sequel that's not horrible but Leslie Cheung and Brigitte Linn's characters are sidelined for a much less interesting cast so it's kind of bullshit imo.

It's pretty fun. The mechanics are similar to Letters from Whitechapel, with a few tweaks. One of the cool modes is that it starts with the solo killer going after the campers, but when daytime comes, the campers go after the killer.

I haven't gotten it to the table enough times to give it a good review, but we've enjoyed it.

Some other good creepy/horror style games are Mysterium, Betrayal at the House on the Hill (this has been super fun at times and anticlimactic at times), and City of Horror.

You really shouldn't give an Italian mother poo poo about her gravy.

edit: I believe the non joke culinary explanation is a "gravy" is made from the drippings of meat so if you're making a "red sauce" or "tomato sauce" with meat and/or its drippings then you're technically making a "gravy." "Sauces" should be smoother.

The only horror game I own is Last Night on Earth, it’s pretty fun but it always takes a while to remember how to play it and it always seems too daunting to explain to house guests when we’re considering which game to play. Also it’s quite a bit more fun to play as the survivors, even though I think being the zombies is easier in most game modes. The zombos feel too generic.
