Hollismason posted:I feel I know this reference. Back in the 40s and before, a lot of theatres in the American South wouldn't show movies with black actors in. Studios thus shot scenes with blacks in such a way that they could be easily edited out, which was often referred to as "the Southern cut". Disney are now doing it again with gays, first in Rise of Skywalker and now in Eternals.

Hearing all the talk about BoP being unconnected to Suicide Squad, I was pleasantly surprised to see the movie reference it several times, including using parts of actual Harley scenes from the movie.

JollyBoyJohn posted:Which is the better film? The 2003 hulk or the 2008 one? 2003 Hulk is the superior film, but when I did my MCU rewatch leading up to Endgame, I 100% enjoyed 2008 Hulk. It's a fair bit more heady than current MCU fare; there's not too many snappy one-liners/quips/jokes/etc. Norton is also a way better Banner than Ruffalo imo. Its final act suffers a lot from a terrible CGI monster fight, but otherwise it's decent. I remember saying MCU Hulk was just as good as Captain Marvel, but I rewatched Captain Marvel a handful of weeks ago, and I take it back. The Incredible Hulk is a much better movie than most MCU films released in last 5 years or so, easily.

Even when it doesn't work, it's still massively entertaining.

Ant Man 2 is not dogshit. It's got more heart and charm than any of the other MCU films. Even the baddie has some character and motive. Sure it's small scale but it's genuine.

GoTG 2 is like a cheap imitation of the 1st and a lot of the jokes fall flat on their face. Plus it has like -- 3 locations? It's boring. It's only saved by the ending with the funeral scene.

And the way they paralleled what he did to Quill's mom with the long term repercussions on earth vs. how Quill just assumed his dad was an angel since GotG1. Thor 2 at least has the Asgard setting and Eccelston is better than Rourke. Which isn't much but still it's enough to give it the edge over Iron Man 2. Honestly though the more these movies age the more I think Civil War is the worst of them all.

I liked Thor 2, it was pleasant with good jokes and I got loaded on mojitos with friends watching it I haven't watched them so either Hulk (I forgot this movie even existed), Spider-mans, Doctor Cumberbatch, or Black Panther is the worst

Yeah Strange is good, but they should've just let Cumberbatch use his accent, like who cares (like did we that badly need another sardonic American dude with a goatee?). Iron Man 2 sucked at the time but turned out to not even be the worst offender for shoe-horned in studio meddling and still did have some interesting stuff and some heart, so across the entire MCU it's ended up being mid-tier. Probably honestly the same with Incredible Hulk tho I still have no actual desire to go back and double check.

After seeing what passes for a good fight scene in the rest of the MCU, Iron Man 2 gets a lot more slack from me than it used to. When it comes to action scenes, I think Winter Soldier is the only competition for Iron Man 2 in the entire 20+ movie MCU.

teagone posted:Norton is also a way better Banner than Ruffalo imo. Agree. I've always been super disappointed that the extent of Ruffalo's internal struggle with the Hulk is him wringing his hands together. It's like super duper "what's the most basic thing I can do to show internal conflict" that he could have possibly done and it's all he does in every scene. *wringes hands together stupidly* I thought it was interesting that Norton wanted to take that character on and I thought he did a good enough job with it. I've also thought the 2008 movie was interesting because it has men who so desire their masculinity be enhanced that they give up all semblance of humanity. "Give me the super steroids so that I have the biggest muscles! Bigger than the other man that I don't like! I don't care if I'm ugly and deformed, lose all ability to have a normal human life, lose my genitals, and lose my capability for clear thinking! I want BIG MUSCLES!" I don't know why in particular the 2008 Hulk movie stuck with me about that, maybe it's the most clear example of it in recent comic book movies? Edit: There's the obvious connection to modern bodybuilding where guys like Rich Piano pump themselves so full of drugs and oil that their hearts explode. Literally killing themselves to be bigger than the next guy door. Violator fucked around with this message at 18:12 on Feb 20, 2020 |

Probably the biggest crime of the MCU is that they just can't think of anything to do with the Ruffdog. You land him as an actor and somehow think "yeah he probably can't carry a movie about a tortured, brilliant loner by himself". loving idiots.

You can have multiple entries in the same tier. Think of the numbers like SSS, SS+, SS, S+, S ranks if that makes categorizing the "top tier" easier for you. And Doctor Strange has some legitimately good set pieces and production design compared to most MCU films. As derivative as it might be (you can argue almost all MCU movies share Iron Man's general structure), it's also the best directed movie to come out of Phase 3 imo. When I did my MCU rewatch, I enjoyed Iron Man 2 about as much as I did the first Iron Man, same as the third. Iron Man 2 has some really solid action beats, and it's arguably one of the best—if not the best—looking MCU movies.
