My mom has the same dialysis schedule as Gibson, I think it's like $4K every visit but it's paid for by the PA state renal foundation or something, and Medicare. She has a guy she watches (she's so goddamn nosy) during treatment who just eats odds and ends throughout his session and the nurses haaaate having to clean up all the crumbs when he leaves. There's another guy who drives a massive dump truck that wears shorts and slide on shower shoes to come for his treatments, even in the winter time. She has stories all the time when I drive her home, I just sort of glaze over. I was going to post this in AUG when it happened, but here will do. The guy who eats has a neighbor who gets paid to drive him. During their wait for their rides I guess mom mentioned to the driver that I read science fiction books; when I showed up that day the Nameless Dude flags down my car and hands me a book through my open window. It's Star Trek, with Spock on the cover. He's like, "You know that part of the movie where they encounter blah blah blah..." I'm like, uh, ok? "Well this book goes into the origins of the aliens they encountered!" Uhhhh oh, that's cool, I guess. I try to hand the book back, but he hands me two more books through the window and walks back into the clinic. I have no idea yet why this is happening. The other two books were Hollywood Babylon, about all the truly soul-shriveling rape and murder occurring in Hollywood in the 30s-50s, and a Piers Anthony book about computer games. And Star Trek, OG.
