i absolutely hated private trackers. i would seed and seed and seed and nobody ever downloaded anything from me so i could never actually use the site

they said 'seed popular stuff!' and i went down this rabbit hole of trying to automate seeding of like garbage pop albums and poo poo in 320 flac and just ended up filling up my hard drive with garbage that i deleted
i'm sure there's a way to effectively use them but i'm also pretty sure that way involves being a loving torrent piracy nerd staring at a computer monitor for four hours a day

torrents are loving awful for music, especially when ratio is a concern (as jonny outlined)

google play music for most things (funy tech poo poo: youtube music. someday i'll be switching to spotify), and soulseek for old or obscure stuff

I think you needed to run your torrents on a VPS in order to get enough bandwidth to upload poo poo consistently, which was way, way more effort than I ever cared to get in to

the funny thing is now with every content owner pulling their poo poo off of Hulu and Netflix we’re back to a thousand subscription apps for everything and guess what most people don’t want? a thousand subscriptions.

it will just drive piracy back up.

there's no way the thousand subscriptions work

hbo, netflix, and disney will continue to get rich by cutting out middlemen. sports will do ok but i doubt it will be as lucrative as it used to be.

everyone else is gonna get crushed. what the gently caress do cbs or comcast/nbc think they are doing, exactly?

the only way was with a fast connection, so youd upload faster and get more raysh than others

its ridiculous because a high raysh means others have to have low ones

fivehead posted:

yes what.cd

but I'm talking about some kind of rip info file that went into the folder, that showed that what you ripped was 100% of what the CD was, that no error correction occured or skipping or anything

Yeah, I wished they could have just not had ratio policing. It just encouraged minimizing your use unless you had your heart set on getting Top40 stuff from an exclusive access private torrent tracker for some reason. Now I get most stuff on Bandcamp. Soulseek is still around at least. Somehow.

this happened long ago. mlb, nhl, espn all use the mlb backend, plus some non-sports stuff like hbo now.

the non-mlb uses became such a big business that mlb spun off the tochnology side into its own company, which is majority owned by disney
