Every negative take on UBI is the same "but why should I work hard when other people will benefit and sit around doing nothing!" or some twaddle about benefits cheats. Yes benefits cheats exist but they are incredibly rare and using it as a reason not to have basic income is like banning people from cooking because some people put too much chilli powder in their curry.

This is the dumbest loving take and has nothing to do with my critique of how stupid UBI is so please don’t think that my central thesis is “people are getting benefits that they don’t deserve”

I live in the workers paradise that is france, though macron has been loving that up recently. Liberté, égalité, manifesté.

Lived in the UK for a few years, and am supposed to move back there in a few years. It was fun, but I'm waiting to see how badly brexit ravages the country before I maybe quit my job to hopefully stay here in frogtown.

What are your opinions on UBI being bad then? I've always assumed it would be a good thing to give people a base income (like 1k a month CAD in canada) from a government which taxes larger businesses harder to offset the fact that minimum wage workers get hosed over and barely scrape by.

The greatest trick that governments over the last 50 years pulled is convincing us that broad money has any fundamental value. They are literally signing off on unlimited asset purchases again. Interest rates are at comical lows.

No developed economy right now would not become a Mad Max 2 hellscape if interest rates went to historically normal levels of like 5%.

UK was on the list of places to go but ya Brexit looks rough, looking at maybe Australia or New Zealand myself.

My central issue with UBI is that it delicately dances around the fact that current welfare programs suck specifically because they’re underfunded and the rich don’t pay their fair share and somehow this magically gets resolved under UBI but doesn’t under a proper welfare system?? In practice I think it’s going to disproportionately make rich people better off than the poor, there’s been studies that show core life essentials expenditures are higher for poor people than for rich people. I could go into the finer details but there’s multiple aspects to UBI that I find probably will end up benefitting a rich person more than they will a poor person and ultimately are going to widen the income gap and not shrink it.

I can see ubi being used as an argument, especially in the states, as a means to depress minimum wage similar to how some states drop minimum wage when employees can get tips. I wouldn't be surprised if a move likenthat led to corporations hoarding more profit and using government pay to subsidize cheap workers.

NZ sounds better than aus, as most kiwis I've met are salt of the earth type people and most aus culture I've been exposed to is alcoholics and the aussie dashcam youtube channel.
