You have to remember that a lot of professional critic's reviews are of only the first three episodes that were made available to the media for review. It's like the Pepsi challenge - formulated to be great for the first few sips but crappy once you finish a whole can.

Ultimately, it just feels like a season long pilot to setup the kind of scenario and cast most 90s syndicated, cable or anime spaceship-based, ensemble cast sci-fi shows had. Like, that end shot could be in Andromeda or Firefly or Outlaw Star or Farscape no problem, and also all of those shows we're better about setting up those casts and the scenario up faster, while being more episodic and engaging on a per episode basis. Like, it's definitely not the usual Star Trek, and it's nice to see that world from a smaller ship, but this wasn't a great way to get there.

Special Guest Star: Tom Hardy I don't feel like I'm spoiling much by saying the season basically ends with the crew Picard cobbled together for this one specific mission staying together for no apparent reason, with no apparent destination or goal in mind, giving me no real reason to tune back in. But I will probably end up kicking them another 10 bucks next year and binge-watching the drat thing anyway.

I love that Starfleet is now comprised of a single (poorly rendered) class of ship that's a super low-effort cross between the Enterprise E and some hilarious fan-made concept. Seeing Riker in charge of the biggest baddest ship the Federation ever built was amazing to watch! The best part of the episode! gently caress no!!!!!!!! This show exists because enough people with enough juice to get it made were still sufficiently pissed off at how the STNG era ended with Nemesis that they did something about it. Everything else about it is just dumb filler and fan service. The only mystery now is: S1 was clearly meant as the Data sendoff they all wished he had so what's S2? Stewart may not have wanted a STNG reboot (and for better or worse he didn't get one) but you know it's gonna be cameo-city next season.
