We will be cruel
And through our cruelty
They will know who we are
I like how I suddenly have a huge raft of interviews with Indian candidates who are completely unable to dial in because they're on lockdown and it turns out Hyderabad doesn't have very good home ISPs. Couldn't move those dudes up to higher priority until it suddenly became a giant crunch because we have tens of thousands of employees who can't get breakfix right now because we have no remote or VAR-based provisioning options. (Also, shout out to our VAR provisioning people. Be safe. Plz don't make my company's priorities your problem if it means risking your health.)

Dude for an interview today ghosted. I just got another calendar invite for tomorrow at 10am that wasn't on my calendar during the work day, cuz I checked before I logged off to collect my recently operated on cat from the vet, and there wasn't anything before noon then. Wagers on whether this dude will show up? Like, I'm legitimately worried about my Indian co-workers, and one of my SF based Indian-born teammates and I had a real frank call about our respective parents' medical issues today while we waited for the no-show to show up. His dad is elderly and infirm, and his sister is also not so well, but she refused to let anyone help her early because she knew their dad was high risk for COVID infection. They're now fully locked down and he has no idea if she can continue to care for their father without putting them both at risk. Meanwhile, my dad has asbestosis and emphysema and about 60% the lung capacity he should for his age...and also both of my parents are over 70. They live in Montana, where motherfuckers been crossing county lines to go to rural bars that aren't obeying quarantine requests to own the libs. Including my parents' friends. I'm equally worried about their social isolation and also someone literally killing my dad with this poo poo. We have recently discussed their plans and backup plans for who's going to take care of their cats if the worst happens and I can't get home right away. Meanwhile, my BFF's grandpa died in a Canadian rest home and her mom can't even be there for his funeral.

I'm the 3rd owner on my parents' home and cars and everything else, and I stand to inherit a fair chunk of money without probate, as in, I'll probably be set for life if they die.

I do not want it.

My company does a yearly meetup to set out goals for the next year, and always gives away some branded swag at the event.

This year's (back in October) was a branded webcam cover.
So I'm thankfully pretty sure we're not being monitored.

Now that we're all WFH (every office is closed, you need high level authorisation to be allowed in for any reason) my manager has set up a daily call which is webcam required, but it's totally non-work, he just wants to make sure people are still conversing with others, seeing other peoples faces etc, we're just doing quizzes and stupid poo poo like that.

I do this with friends (we play Jackbox games while the host streams the screen on Twitch. It's wonky, but it works surprisingly well), and my brothers (via Duo).

I don't need to do it with work people.

The pirate code is really more of a guideline, than actual rules.

We have a daily standup over skype at 10AM, and then an all-hands status report meeting with the boss on 2PM using Skype since the Corona outbreak.

Boss was able to keep it up a whole 6 days before suggesting we don't do the 2PM meeting every day, since "there's not that much news anyway".

I kinda liked it, you just go 'hi' and then turn off your mic and webcam and go do something else. Maybe even something productive.

How do you deal with lag? The newer games have an option to extend the timers, but even with the low latency modes enabled and me on a 500/50 internet connection I've been unable to get below 15 seconds on Twitch or Youtube live streams.

We switched to using Discord which has near zero lag, but that ties the players to using computers or other mobile devices as their screens where Twitch and Youtube both offer multiple ways to display on a TV.

The 10 sec delay is there, but it's not super terrible. We extended the timers out as far as they'll go. We voice chat over discord. I'm thinking about possibly doing it over zoom screen-share, which would dramatically reduce/eliminate lag, but our group doesn't always have access to a zoom pro/enterprise account, so that's touch and go.

Same but I lay mine face up and front camera is default so it's just pitch black.
The built in mic does surprisingly well when the Surface is used this way.

I got several tickets from the same department a while back that I ignored until my queue got so full it was hard to actually see the important stuff so I decided to do some cleanup.

Basically every ticket was "I can't access this calendar. this calendar won't display, everyone has access to this calendar but me, etc..." Of course, nobody actually mentions which loving calendar they're talking about or any details that could help me sleuth down the problem.

I had to aggressively email everyone in the department with their supervisor CC'd before I got a response from anyone.

Turns out "no access" means "I can't see the calendar and I don't know how to add it." I'm pretty sure that poo poo should be a part of their onboarding training but LOL I'm sure every other department is just as bad about actually training people as IT is.

I thought about writing up a whole "here's how to use outlook and add calendars" but yeah that's a terrible idea. I'm just gonna reply, "ask your neighbor how they added it" and close all those tickets.

I did this over the weekend by streaming on Zoom. The lag was near zero. I have some of the games on steam, and for the others I have them on PS4 and used the PS4 remote play app to stream them to my laptop and then over zoom.

You can tell the AV nerds and streamers at my company because there's weirdos like me who have a good ring light, an external camera and tripod so it looks like I'm looking at you when I talk, and pro audio gear. My now former boss is very similar, and there's definitely a few people who you know are showing off.

And then there's people who are dialing in with their laptop cam and mic, with their laptop on their lap, skewed out dutch angle wobbling around because they're half slumped over and constantly shifting for comfort, their kids and their dog warbling due to being barely picked up and the codec horking the sound up...

What I'm saying is, all y'all with daily mandatory dial ins? Here, nah. There's been a daily optional meeting where someone who's good at sharing fitness or mental wellness or whatever tips chats at us, and we get updates on how the company is handling the infections among our teammates. There's also a, "Show up and shoot the poo poo," chat at the end of the day. One of my set of coworkers I'm social with outside of work spins up "coffee breaks" where we rant about meme life or share cooking tips or show off our pets. It's nice. :unsmith: It's been totally ad hoc and outside the company machine, so I like it. Another co-worker and I have recently been chatting a lot in text cuz we have similar mental health histories and are trying to prop each other up.

We're trying. :unsmith:

I have to say that I am impressed with our Dell laptops: the built-in camera, mike and speakers work surprisingly well for video conferencing.

The only issue is that, like every laptop, the camera has a really wide angle of view - so you have to make sure everything behind you is worksafe and appropriate.

I recommend a Modmic if you do wind up wanting to get something external. They're a fantastic little investment, because you can mount them on anything with the little stick-on magnetic bases they come with. I love my wireless modmic, because I can just take it out of its case and slap it on my VR headset, my regular gaming headphones, or my PS4 headset.

I know the modmic is well received here but holy hell $80 for something like that seems ridiculous. I feel like mic quality for integrated or webcam based ones is more than serviceable for audio meetings and expensive mics for the purpose of meetings is going the way of the dedicated sound card.

I once rented a room from a very nice couple who modeled for the art program at the nearby uni. They also received many of the art pieces they had modeled for, so the dining room was graced by an expressionist painting of my landlord lounging around with his dick out. As you do. And yes, I was in that art program, and yes, I have drawn my landlord’s penis.

Speaking of wide cameras and nudity, I recently realized if I don’t use the right lighting, the new cam is clearly picking up my band’s first concert poster on the wall behind me, from where we opened for a guy with a prehensile penis mask on his face, so that’s definitely a visual the poster maker leaned into. That said, everyone at work expects me to be the music weirdo, so this is fine. I’m just waiting for someone to realize the vape pen I’m hitting is not full of cotton candy or nicotine.

I also took a video of my cat toddling around drunkenly after surgery to send my family, and glad I reviewed it first, cuz my discarded PJs, three empty vodka bottles, and the Volcano vaporizer were well visible...that got deleted and reshot real quick.
